Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

No illnesses related to this finding have been reported.

The only outlet where the romaine was available for direct consumer purchase was Cash & Carry Smart Food Service stores in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. The product at those outlets was packed in True Leaf Farms cardboard cartons. All bags carry a use by date of 9/29/11. This product was labeled as follows:

•2# bags, chopped romaine – Bag and box code B256-46438-8

True Leaf Farms is working with its food service distribution customers to ensure that other romaine products that may be implicated are pulled from the market.

Anyone who has in their possession the recalled romaine should not consume it and should either destroy it or call Church Brothers for return.

Consumers with questions or who need information may call Church Brothers, the sales agent for True Leaf Farms, at 1-800-799-9475.

Kroger brand Ground Beef
generic label Ground Beef
Why: E. coli O157:H7 contamination
Scope: Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Tyson Fresh Meats, an Emporia, Kansas establishment, is recalling approximately 131,300 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

The following products are subject to recall:

•5 pound chubs of Kroger brand Ground Beef 73% Lean - 27% Fat, packed in 40 pound cases containing eight chubs. Cases bear an identifying product code of D-0211 QW. These products were produced on Aug. 23, 2011 and were shipped to distribution centers in Indiana and Tennessee for retail sale.
•3 pound chubs of Butcher’s Brand Ground Beef 73% Lean - 27% Fat, packed in 36 pound cases each containing 12 chubs. Cases bear an identifying product code of D-0211 LWIF. These products were produced on Aug. 23, 2011 and were shipped to distribution centers in North Carolina and South Carolina for retail sale.
•3 pound chubs of a generic label Ground Beef 73% Lean - 27% Fat, packed in 36 pound cases each containing 12 chubs. Cases bear an identifying product code of D-0211 LWI. These products were produced on Aug. 23, 2011 and were shipped to distribution centers in Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin for retail sale.
The products subject to recall have a Best Before or Freeze By date of SEP 12 2011 and the establishment number "245D" ink jetted along the package seam.

FSIS and the establishment are concerned that consumers may freeze the product before use and that some product may be in consumers’ freezers. FSIS strongly encourages consumers to check their freezers and immediately discard any product subject to this recall.

FSIS became aware of the problem yesterday (Sept. 26, 2011) when the agency was notified by the Ohio Department of Health of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses located in Butler County. Illness onset dates range from Sept. 8, through Sept. 11, 2011. The on-going investigation involved collecting leftover ground beef from the patients’ home on Sept. 19 which tested positive for E. coli O157:H7 by the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s laboratory today (Sept. 27).

FSIS is continuing to work with Ohio public health partners on this investigation.

E. coli O157:H7 is a bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider.

Consumers with questions regarding the recall should contact the company at 1-866-328-3156.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriage and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Carol’s Cuts Fruit Medley, packaged in 8 ounce individual serving clamshell containers (6 packages per case) and 5 pound bulk trays of cantaloupe chunks were distributed to institutional food customers, including restaurants, in Overland Park, Kansas, Kansas City and Maryland Heights, Missouri and Omaha, Nebraska. The Carol’s Cuts recall is part of a larger recall involving cantaloupe traced to Rocky Ford cantaloupes produced by Jensen Farms in Holly, Colorado. The Food and Drug Administration confirmed that Listeria was found in samples taken from a Denver-area store and the Jensen Farms packing facility. The melons were shipped to at least 17 different states across the U.S. between July 29 and Sept. 10. As of Thursday there were eight deaths and 55 illnesses related to the contaminated cantaloupe.

Jensen Farms earlier issued a nationwide recall of its cantaloupes after news of the multi-state outbreak. Jenson Farms ceased production and distribution of the product while FDA and the company continue their investigations as to what caused the problem.

Consumers who may have the recalled Carol’s Cuts product in their possession should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or destroy it.

Re: Recalls

I saw on the news this AM that several GE dishwashers are being recalled due to a fire hazard. Here's a link to see if yours is one of them & what to do. (Newscaster said GE was instructing people to pull them out & unplug them immediately; there have been 7 confirmed fires so far). Models from several years going back to 2006 are affected.

Beef

Postby Kathryn-in-Canada » Mon Oct 01, 2012 10:15 am

This originally started as ground beef but has now been expanded to include all beef from the processing plant.

If you've bought beef since August 24th, check out the article which includes a link to all the stores where the product was sold.

For US the largest retailers (but not limited to) were Albertson’s, Baker’s, City Market, Dillon’s, Food 4 LEss, Foods Co., Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, Haggen Northwest Fresh, Hilander, Jay C, King Soopers, Kroger, Owen’s, Payless, QFC, Ralph’s, Safeway, Sam’s Club, Scott’s, Smith’s Stores, and TOP Food and Drug.

For Canada: CO-OP, Food Basics, Foodland, Giant Tiger, IGA, Costco, Kirkland Signature, Loblaws, Longos, Metro, No Frills, Real Canadian WholeSale Club, Safeway, Sobeys, SuperValu, and Walmart.

(All the places I buy beef are on that list but I last bought beef August 13.)
