Resourceful Sunday

Postby bittersweet » Sun Feb 26, 2012 7:10 am

Today's title was chosen in honour of the two national parks that were formed on this day - Grand Canyon (1919), and Grand Teton (1929). Resources, whether personal, financial, or national should be cared for in order to use them wisely, and - if possible - preserve them.

What can you do today to be a responsible steward of your resources?

I strongly suspect I'll owe a SHEM or two before the night is out. It's yet another night that I simply can't sleep. Yes, I had a cup of coffee after DH got home from gaming...but it shouldn't have affected me THIS much! It's after 4am, and I haven't felt the least bit sleepy yet.

Of course, I managed to sit around pretty much all day and do virtually nothing except the bare minimum of critter care. I did watch the last part of Invictus (really want to watch the whole movie now!), then Blind Side (awesome movie!), and then Da Vinci Code (well worth the 3.5 hours!). There went...ummmm...at least 6 hours of my day  DH went upstairs to play on his computer after the last movie, admonishing me not to stay up too late. Well...I didn't PLAN to be up, but I just never got sleepy! I've finally put away the clean dishes, washed all the dirty dishes, cleaned up the mess under the dining room table, and actually got things organized so I can do a bit of sewing to get some of that stuff out of here!

DH had asked if I wanted to go for breakfast this morning, and - assuming I'm still awake and functioning - I'm going to wake him about 8am so we can go. That way if I finally crash, I'll be home with a tummy full of waffles and strawberries! I'll even pre-exercise by clearing the steps and the driveway. Neither one of the men that lives here even thought of moving any of the snow that's been falling and blowing all day (and most of the night!). In the meantime, I might as well get some things done that won't make a lot of noise, since DH and DS are both asleep.

Good afternoon from the coast of Africa!

Sea day here. We slept in a bit and then I just s2s and headed up for breakfast on my own, and then church in the theatre. Stayed on for the lecture after (more or less trapped because I had been chatting with someone who came to church with me and they didn't leave and I couldn't get out from around them.

Did my devotions, with tea and chocolate and then headed off to find dh.

It is definitely rolling today so found him asleep on the couch in our room. I've got a slight headache forming so have taken an advil. Will put on my sea bands shortly since I can tell it is the motion that is making me feel this way, not my cold or tiredness. We had 9 hours of solid sleep last night so no excuse for tiredness.

I have a few hours of quiet in which I will be writing since I have a lot to do. I have to write and submit my self-evaluation of my lay preaching training before the 1st of March.

I'm still up and going..have mended a couple of kittycat pads, and spent a bit of time with the kittens. Next, I think I'll put away the clean dishes, and then wash out and put away the cat stuff that's soaking upstairs in the tub.

Heaven only knows what's going on with my sleep patterns, but I've got to make sure to get to bed at a decent time tonight....I have to be back at work in the morning!

Thanks for saving me from a SHEM, Kathryn!

The wind 'doth' blow a few days back and have been without internet ever since! Have a feeling the lines were disrupted between here and the main drag. Did see a B House truck down the road late yesterday.

I've been trying & trying & trying to get into our bank account so I can do some transferring to pay our CC bill. Keeps telling me the password/id are wrong. So, guess that's my first DPC tomorrow!

DH and DD are at the TSA competition at Amelia Island -ever since Wednesday. Expect them back this afternoon.

GD went to spend a few hours with her bio-sister yesterday and ended up staying the night. That meant she didn't get her afternoon or nightime meds -but there she'll probably do okay. Had a big incident Friday night with her -at least DSIL did. I was in my room and heard yelling (hers, not DSIL) & slamming doors. Seems she had gotten some things from a schoolmate and pierced her nose herself & put a stud in. DSIL noticed when she went out to see him in the garage and she promptly removed it (she'd been told before she COULD NOT do any of this). Next thing DSIL knew a girl appeared out of nowhere. Evidently school friend's mother drove her over here and gd & she had cooked things up over the internet. Short story -girl left, gd was mad, mad, mad, but seemed over it yesterday morning. DD was completely aghast, but I thought DSIL handled everything very well!

Have to get ready for church. Hope to BBL.
Begun is half done -SO! JUST BEGIN!!

Good morning, villagers ~
Oh boy, did I get sidetracked last night ... but I think it will turn out to be in a good way. I stumbled upon a terrific blog called "Destination 1940" --
http://destination1940.blogspot.com

This blogger found "America's Housekeeping Manual" from 1945 and started setting "missions" for herself based on the instructions in the book. The blog was written from November 2008 to April 2010.

I decided to read it from the beginning, the first posts in 2008. I'm glad I'm reading it in order, I don't think I'd be enjoying it so much if I'd jumped in at the end. So far I'm up to the middle of December 2008, as she's getting ready for Christmas.

She includes lots of links to other similar blogs. So many attractive links that I had to create a new folder in my Favorites and just collect the addresses there to read them later.

Here's one I am definitely going to explore:
http://www.archive.org/details/CompleteBroadcastDay

It claims to be mp3 files of a complete broadcast day (19 hours) on the radio from 1939. The programs run 15 minutes at a time. The index lists lots of music (Arthur Godfrey, Teddy Powell, Louis Prima), news programs, and oh! the soap operas!! Plus I think "news for women" might be a cooking show?

OK, I've forced myself to close that window and stay on target with "Destination 1940."

As I said, she started with a basic mission each week and paced herself. Her mission the first week was to get in the habit each morning of throwing back the covers to air the bed, and tidy the bedroom before breakfast. The second week she chose to start eating a breakfast cooked from a 1940s cookbook. And so on, following instructions from her housekeeping book.

She includes lots of charming vintage photos.

Hmm ... does this fit Bittersweet's "resourceful" theme for today? This blog is certainly inspiring me to take another look at my BWP and morning routines!

Waving good morning to y'all and good' day to lynlee.

I have several things I want to accomplish this morning. Want to make a trip to Home depo to petty up my life. Spring break is in 2 weeks and I have a list a mile long of things I want to do. However I am trying to keep in mind that there is a strong possibility that I will retire in the spring, thus giving me oodles of time to work on them. Unlike Lucylee, there is no what-if involved in my decisions. I've been telling my friends I've already begun a "Next" list, meaning what am I going to do with myself in the "Next" part of my life. Skydiving for my birthday is something I really want to do. I told Norma last night that I'll just have to surprise Sweetie with "guess what I'm doing today", cause he's not really keen on my idea. I've postponed this several times in my life, but it seems appropriate to begin my Next part of my life by celebrating what I've accomplished and getting excited about my life to come.

Sweetie and I had a grand time with Norma and her DH last night. We ate at the casino buffet. The food was great, but the company was better. We'all have such a grand time. Norma and I always talk about y'all. Sometimes it strikes me funny to think we'all are all so close, but most of us have never met. Some of y'all have been in my life for over 10 years. I am reminded of Nancy and her longtime over sea pen pal. I wish I had won a lottery. I would by plane tickets for everyone, except for Lucylee....we know she'd have to come by car ;) Put us up in some sunny location where we could just spend time yaking and enjoying our times together.

Ohhh the computer gremlins are starting to pull me in...need to make a mad dash before they get a good hold on me. Y'all have a great day and I'll see y'all later...............

Hi, Cowinkie! Yes, I'd love some links to old radio programs. The danger of trying to search them out myself is, of course, that I end up spending hours chasing the fascinating links!

This time started with such a simple search. I was looking for the saying about "Wash on Monday, Iron on Tuesday" etc.

Not sure if it's good or bad, that turned out to be a popular blog topic and off I went into cyberspace for all of last evening since nothing on tv looked interesting ...

I'm thinking the old radio programs might be a kick to listen to while I'm washing dishes. I bet I could talk DH into downloading them onto CDs for me, or I might finally invest in a cheap mp3 player.
