It's Monday. Mount an Offensive.

Postby Harriet » Mon Jun 18, 2018 6:26 am

The best defense is a good offence!

Face Monday and handle it!
Face the house and subdue the (fill in the blank - clutter, mess, disorganization).
Face the music.
Schedule an offensive.
The best defense isn’t playing defense at all but playing offense. Talking about the elephant in the room, running toward what you fear. This can be difficult to do because you have to learn to override the little-kid brain. But if you can, it has certain clear advantages. Here are the obvious ones:

You put the problem to rest
You control the process
(By playing offense you can control what goes down, rather than unexpectedly getting caught off guard.)
You build up your ability to approach anxiety
You increase your self-confidence

I was up early so I got on the next-up Desk Day right away to be quiet.

There's some planting of hanging baskets to do today.

Ds and I decided both children will be at my house Thursday. They have "camp" activities this week, the children told me yesterday - wonder if that is a VBS thing. Dd19 has also been invited to help work her young man's church's VBS soon. That has implications. I need to sit and talk with her about that.

About getting on the offensive - just something that's been sitting on my brain lately. Heavy, too. I have areas of life - both physical spaces and mental blocks - to which I just need to plunge in and take over.

An excellent theme for me, thank you Harriet!

As I said last night (confusingly, my writing was extremely poor due to exhaustion) I need to 'front load' this week and get as much done as quickly as I can.

I always feel that one should learn from one's mistakes and in this case it was my comment a few weeks ago that by putting things off to the last minute I ended up in a mad scramble because something else arose that needed to be dealt with.

Learning from that, I'll front load this week since I know at any time I may be called upon to be with the family or the dying child. In theory, I shouldn't be because I have no training in this but if I'm asked, I'll be there (since there is no minister known to the family to hand this off to.)

Best case scenario, I'll have the end of the week off, in which case I'll book a hotel and go to the clock museum way up the valley on Saturday and stay in Pembroke for my Sunday service before coming home. Split the driving up over 2 days, enjoy a break from home (not that I want one.)

Worst case, I'll have my service for Sunday written so I can be in the moment with others, not worrying about my next deadline.

On paper this is an open week.

My senior friend has surgery tomorrow so maybe a hospital or aftercare visit (during recovery, she's moving into 'my' retirement home where I preached.)

Thursday my final refugee family arrives. I need to go through the items I have to see what I can donate. I need to be at the airport for the welcoming. That is it. Nothing else.

Preaching up the valley on Sunday (therefore 'big' church plus the 90 minute drive to it, maybe I'll go up on Saturday.) MF supplies me with almost everything, I just need to come with sermon, opening prayer, prayers of the people, and offering prayer. Maybe blessing, maybe not. The sermon is started as are the prayers of the people.

Dd doesn't need me at all this week although I'm invited over whenever I want to go. We have a hospital appointment for dgs for next week (and lately he won't even go into the nurse's room at the family doctor's so I'll be along to wrestle him while she talks with technicians and nurses.) The specialist wants a closer look at the birthmark on his spine just in case it's a sign of a deeper problem. So ultrasound it is. It is a children's hospital so they can deal with the hysterical child. They will be very good at it.

The rest of my week's focus will be on paperwork and the Residents' association. Plus some housework. While I've been busy with other things, these have all been set aside.

So that is the offensive I hope to mount this week.

My day started 30 minutes earlier than planned when I was woken by a noise similar to the growling of air in the pipes but reverberating in the walls and ceiling. It would come in short bursts every few minutes until 7 when it started up steady. I don't know for how long, I abandoned that part of the apartment since it was irritating but things are quiet now.

I slept well though and had 7.5 hours in which to sleep. Was up only once in the night.

I've had tea and chocolate and done half the re-audit of the church books. Did that while on the balcony. The second half requires my computer to compare my refugee accounting to his notes on the account.

The dishwasher is unloaded and the balcony plants watered.

It will be a scorcher and humid day today so at some point I'll shut up the balcony doors and turn on the a/c. It has been on in the bedroom for a few days now. I like the fresh air and birdsong so will hang on as long as I can. I don't pay for electricity so once I give up on fresh air, I'll blast it and get things cooled down quickly.

Monday is housework day so I have vacuuming, dusting and mopping to do. The apartment is dusty even though I did it last week (probably because of the windows being open all the time.)

My dinner tonight is planned. I may go out for lunch at the grocery store hot bar or have eggs and bacon. I need to cook up all my bacon and freeze it so that's also on my to-do list for the day. Getting ahead of that upcoming task just in case I don't have time in the future.

Going to be hot again here too, Kathryn. Strange but true -this is the ONLY site I seem to be able to access with some ease. Have to leave in 1/2 hour to take dh to a dr appointment. I was going to go for lab work this morning but I had a sugar low about 4:15 and ate. Thus sure wasn't fasting. Going to change my appointment with my primary to next week and I'll find a day in there to go for my labs.

Can I say I'm glad the weekend is over. So nice here during the week. Next Sunday is DS-R's birthday. They're planning a "VIP" trip to Boston area to go to the Major League Lacrosse game against an all star team from around the world. They were given 3 tickets and discounted rate at the team's hotel. DGS13 knows nothing at this point but will be part of the ceremonies at this game. They know several of the players quite well -actually there's some on both teams I guess. I need to look it up to see just what game this is. This is their 'vacation' for this summer. Hotel 'discounted' rate is $300  a night.

H thinks it is too soon to look for a diff. place, a neighbor has a friend with storage units I can get a call when one comes up, more are being built down the road as well.

My friend has been taking lots of classes that might be my plan if I need an activity after the move. LOL! The kids were thinking collage I was thinking crafting classes.

It is rainy and cool 60* our hi today. I have started the next bag of items to be donated.
I am not alone. Take a peek at my fb pist of weekend work. I will leave that up a bit before changing settings to family.

I was up and about at 7 a.m. and am prepping for the week. I posted a link over in Members Only to a newspaper article about my DNA talk this weekend. Very nice, lengthy article. Worrying now about whether I have enough material for almost two hours of discussion!

This week is another busy week, possibly not as busy as last week but certainly stressful.

Tuesday p.m.: Webinar to watch
Wednesday afternoon: to Nashville to see Paul Simon on Wednesday evening, dinner with friends there first
Thursday a.m.: home
Thursday midday: cleaning lady comes
Thursday evening: dinner with client/friends from out of town and they stay over here at my house (hence, need to dcleaning lady and guest room clean up)
Saturday a.m.: presentation at library
Monday that follows: Turn in Pro Gen assignment

Big goals this week are the guest bedroom and house/garage looking decent, and prep for the DNA talk.
Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better [wo]man. Ben Franklin

I mounted an offensive even before I read Harriet's nice opening post. We were thinking alike.

Yesterday we had lunch out with 2 couples after church. Something to do on a usually-quiet Father's Day. DH did get phone call and 3 DGKs came for short visit with gift, they were in town to see their other Nana for her birthday tomorrow. Great timing!

Other DD is coming Wed with her 3 kids for an overnight stay. So I am scrambling here. We are not in bad shape but lots to do.

I'm waiting for a call back from someone and I have 1 LOL hanging up and my desk is sorted out. Got rid of paper piles there, it was looking pretty bad.

Taking a break to get breakfast/lunch next.

Waiting on dmom at the oral surgeon’s office — this is just a check-up.
We do not have to go from here to the regular dentist office BECAUSE dmom left home without her lower dentures.
Sigh sigh sigh....

She will be rescheduling that. Sigh...
Tomorrow is another day.

Wow! I was able to get on again. Took dh for his physical this morning. They were suggesting an additional shingles shot for him but said it might be $200-$500. He said probably not for him, but maybe for me? I think not. Got the shingles vaccine in 2000 and had full blown shingles in 2009. They said I had actually given myself a 'booster'. Nevertheless I'll ask my own Dr about it next week. Dr did tell dh to start taking a Magnesium supplement once a day -he's starting with 250mg. Says that has stayed consistently low in his last tests.

In all the trouble trying to log on I failed to wish Mr and Mrs Sunny a HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! So consider it wished :D
