If you work in the great room a lot, you might need a desk in there, too. Or at least some shelves.

Maybe a cabinet with doors? Then when you finish working for the day, you can tidy the books and papers onto the shelves and close the doors, so your eye no longer sees it all as clutter.

Would an old-fashioned secretary fit with your other furniture? The ones I've seen have both a writing surface (sometimes it folds out), shelves, and/or cubbyholes.
