Michele Barbuto is an RN in Physical Rehabilitation Nursing and a T-Tapp trainer.

She shared this new poem/prose she wrote yesterday.

Can you tell she must face a lot of resistance to exercise with her patients?

Do You Need a Reason to Work Out?

Pick one and get moving!
Because it makes you feel confident
Because it helps you get stronger
Because exercise helps combat depression
Because you'll feel proud of yourself
Because you have goals you want to reach
Because you'll feel bad if you don't
Because you want to move forward, not backward
Because it burns more calories than not working out
Because it improves your heart health
Because you want a great butt
Because it prevents diabetes 2
Because you want to be a good example to your kids
Because you want to feel good in your clothes
Because it reduces your risk of cancer
Because your body was made to move
Because you want to be an athlete
Because you want to look better
Because it lifts your mood
Because you want to stand taller
Because it reduces back pain
Because it feels good
Because it makes you feel accomplished
Because you spend most of your day on your butt
Because swimsuit season is always coming
Because strong is the new skinny
Because dieting only works so much
Because it strengthens your bones, too
Because it helps you lose weight
Because it allows you to eat more food
Because it's the best way to spend "me" time
Because it helps you de-stress
Because it's cheaper than therapy
Because you want a strong core
Because you want to take care for yourself
Because you take pride in your body
Because it strengthens your legs
Because it helps your clothes fit better
Because you want to push yourself
Because you are capable of more than you ever imagined
Because moving your body feels good
Because it keeps your mind sharp
Because it helps you beat belly bloat
Because it helps you sleep better at night
Because it gives you energy
Because you want to stay healthy as you age
Because you want to look younger
Because you want toned arms
Because it improves your balance
Because it burns off last night's dessert
Because it boosts your immune system
Because sweat is sexy
Because you want to live longer
Because you want to get better at your game
Because you want to catch someone's eye
Because exercisers earn more money
Because you're more likely to eat better when you exercise
Because you want to shave time off your running pace
Because you want to breathe easier
Because you want to see the scale drop
Because exercise improves your sex life
Because you are worth it
Because being fit makes everything in life better
Because you promised yourself that you would
Because you deserve a better life
Because it'll help you drink more water
Because you want to do real push-ups
Because it reduces your health care costs
Because you'll miss fewer days of work
Because you want to create a new future for yourself
Because it'll help you like what you see in the mirror
Because it makes clothing shopping more fun
Because you want to look and feel incredible
Because exercising can be fun
Because it'll give your skin a glow
Because it's a good way to spend time with your friends
Because it'll help you prevent the middle-age spread
Because it reduces your blood pressure
Because you don't want to let yourself go
Because you don't want to squeeze into an airplane or rollercoaster seat
Because it strengthens your spirit
Because it's a cheap way to entertain yourself
Because you'll be able to reward yourself
Because you need a reason to wear those new workout clothes
Because you're tired of being tired
Because not working out is not going to get you very far
Because it's a great way to spend time outside
Because you made a commitment to yourself
Because you're tired of starting over
Because there will always be another wedding, vacation or reunion
Because you're not a quitter
Because it improves your cholesterol
Because it boosts your metabolism
Because it prevents age-related muscle loss
Because if you can do this, you can do anything
Because a fit body is a healthy body
Because it beats sitting on the couch
Because everyone has at least 10 minutes to spare
Because you want to be stronger than your excuses
Because not working out isn't working out for you
Because the only workout you ever regret is the one you skip

Back from a long walk I feel better it relieved some stress and the baby slept in the stroller on the last part of the walk.

OH! :!: WOW! :!: HARRIET! :!: I sure did need to read through that list today! The reason being is that I've lost 105 Lbs., but I'm still about 40 Lbs. overweight! I keep putting off getting "in the groove" to get the rest off me. I keep telling myself, "Well, after all, I've already lost over 100 Lbs., I wear a 16/18, my clothes fit, and I don't look that bad."

The FACT is that I've got osteoarthritis in both hips and have Fibromyalgia, too. I keep reading how losing even 10 Lbs. can make the arthritis and FM feel much better, too! :!:  I've got a beautiful emerald green journal, with occasional Irish quotes or poems in it. I put my weight loss blanks, for weighing in every Mon., in the back, I wrote a list of goals, and decided to (as Oprah's trainer calls it), to "Get with the program!" :D

Today, I only walked about 10 - 15 min., because we had company all day, but I ate really healthy, without trying to, except for 1" bite of a U-No candy bar. But it was only 1" and not an entire candy bar. ;) I talked with my company today, about how I don't know why I don't just get "going" on losing the rest of it, she didn't know either, and after reading that list, it reminds me of SEVERAL reasons why I DO want to lose! I'll re-visit your post, Harriet, to re-read that list from time to time! I THANK YOU for posting it! It's so motivating AND TRUTHFUL, too! You're so wonderful to have posted it! I just cannot thank you enough! ♥

As soon as I saw it I knew it must be from her heart (experience/concern with so many patients and other exercisers) and from her head (long-term thoughts, hard-earned knowledge about consequences/results). As I read down through it, many things started to ring true, including the full extent of how many reasons there really are, that really do make sense. Some are for somebody else, not me, but some are right on the money for me, or even something I hadn't thought of, like "Because there will always be another wedding, vacation or reunion".

I had never had that thought set out there for me - sure, we try to get in best shape for an event, and that's worthwhile. But isn't it true that there's always going to be a steady stream of events? So a better thinking pattern is just, "I exercise." Not, "I'm exercising since such-and-such is coming up". How many times have we put an event on our calendars way in advance, then found that different days around it turned out to be just as important to us.

I was gratified over the weekend to find out that dd33 is still T-Tapping and is also doing some of my way-of-eating. She does the Basic workout in her office on weekdays on her break. Although we had a lovely large meal on Friday evening, and traditional breakfast Sunday morning, we shared a lower-calorie day together Saturday. Her advice for me is that she thinks I should stop weighing every day, so I'm trying to cut back (lol) for a while. I advised her to get in more healthy fats.

I am regretting not finding a chance to tell dfirstsisil that it looked like she had lost weight when I saw her this weekend. I really like to do that when I have the chance. She did mention going to the gym. I wasn't able to pick up on that and continue the conversation with so many people around and so much going on.

Today's news announced that officially obesity has been classified as a DISEASE! This is supposed to help millions of Americans, health costs, etc...

I've not been making good diet choices, although I'm doing fruits, veggies, protein, & dairy. (I'm eating sweets.)

Since this is also a "Health" section: I wanted to say how I identified an "Asthma Trigger", which I caused myself. I USED to use Miconazole Nitrate 2% on my dried groins and under breasts, to prevent chaffing or jock itch-(groins). I would follow-up with good doses of baby powder, which would be in the shower stall with me, I'd hold my breath, but still, I breathed in powder. I used too much powder. More is better? Ha! THEN, the master bathroom would get this powdery dust all over it, even into the master bedroom, where I sleep next to the bathroom door. We have wood floors in the master bedroom and powder could be seen in the spot outside the bathroom door. I've dusted and dusted that bathroom, probably not regular enough, then when it's clean and dusted, I breathe so much better. :D DH uses very little powder and no cream first. I asked him to buy me (which I'm using the last of today), Monistat Soothing Anti-chaffing Powder-gel for bikini area, etc.. I only need a pea-size per groin, it's NOT goopy-feeling, feels so clean & nice. I'm so proud I identified one of my asthma triggers by myself & this product will put an end to the bathroom one! It's only $4.99 on-line at Walgreen's Drugs, we have a local Walgreen's Drugs, & DH will get some today, after he gets his tail-gate cables replaced, due to a recall several years ago. But he procrastinates, so 1 cable broke, so finally, he's getting them replaced free of charge.

I continue to do light puttering around the house, for activity, might try to walk in 10-min. timed increments, to see how I do with the asthma and I'll continue to educate myself by reading the asthma book. I see my doctor later this week, too. I'm sorta scared, but I'm prepared, need to write questions, but wrote comments/questions on the bottom pages with lines in the peak flow meter book, which I'll take, too. I'm sorta scared about going onto a permanent pill or something that might not agree with me nor be covered by insurance. :?:

We use johnson and johnson aloe vera baby powder here. I never thought about it being a trigger for asthma.

It's supposed to help with weight loss if we get enough sleep, right?

The change to 8 hours sleep at night - well, I should say the chance for 8 straight hours sleep at night - rather than 5:30 alarm, always needing naps, racing through the first several hours without food, etc., seems to have put an extra 1.5 pounds on me and 2 pounds on dd. Hmmmm... ... I knew I was under stress and I knew she was literally running. I'm disappointed to have this sudden jump but will just keep working to get it off. I assume we'll settle into the summer and even out.

I'm still not sleeping a straight night through - that goes the way of bathroom trips, restless dh, my ddad getting up in the night and Tobias' morning disappointments in me. But it is a joy not to have to set the alarm right now.
