Postby Harriet » Wed Nov 01, 2023 5:18 pm

As homemakers, when we take care of ourselves, we increase the strength, stamina, resistance and optimism we have to enjoy life and to be nurturing to others, whether in our homes, extended families or community.

Welcome to our thread about benefiting health and fitness! We are challenging ourselves to greater well-being and encouraging well-being in our family members. Each of us is learning - recognizing needs and finding personal balance.

I'm still trying to get 30 minutes of walking in a day.

I'm still not succeeding. But my step counts for the weeks are much higher now than they were before I started this in August.

The only other thing that seems better is that my speed is up on my walk. It makes it awkward because what took 30 minutes in August, not leaves me back home with 5 - 8 minutes of walking time to get to my 30 minutes! So my routes are getting longer and longer. But most days I can walk at 3mph for the whole walk. There are days I struggle with this, especially if I go out in the late afternoon or evening.

I have two alarms on my phone, one for 10:30 and another at 3:30 so I get a constant reminder to take a walk if I haven't yet done so. And the 3:30 alarm falls well after my nap time so I don't have to worry about one healthy habit interfering with another.

I've upped my step goal to 60K per week, about 8500 daily. I'm doing less walking at my workout - they have me walk around the room a time of two to catch my breath but I'm not doing as much of that I think. I need about 7500 steps for today and tomorrow to make it. I know we'll be doing a lot of walking in NYC, and this spring, on the river cruise excursions.

I am, very slowly, losing weight. I'm firming up my core also, so I think I look better in clothes.

I had fewer steps than last week but I managed seven 30 minute walking sessions. Actually there were 2 days of 60 minutes, 2 days of 30 minutes and one day of 30 minutes on the treadmill which is really hard I can't hold the rails and have my watch work, but without my walking poles I was weaving back and forth dramatically (and scraping my knuckles on the railings.)

I'm averaging over 60K steps a week easily now but that is on my watch which counts every single step. Since other systems don't count every step but wait until you've walked at least 10 or 20 steps, that means my number may be higher than other people's but that's because of the different counting method. My pedometer (starts counting after 20 steps in a row) says ~45000 steps for the week. My garmin says 64261.
