»-(¯`v´¯)-» Pet Show »-(¯`v´¯)-»

Postby Harriet » Wed Jul 16, 2008 9:56 pm

Let’s hold a Pet Show here in our village’s Outdoor Spaces and Gardens! Right here on the beautifully green lawn is a perfect spot. It is so well landscaped and the flowers around the edges are lovely – thank you, O S & G posters! (We promise to pooper-scoop.)

Here’s a chance to get to know a little more about villagers who happen to care for pets or grandpets, or work with 4-H and farm animals.

Prizes awarded in… … enjoyment! :D

Tell us about your pet(s), and how terrific they are – it's probably not possible to brag too much, so don’t worry about that. All other entrants will understand! If your pet has a product recommendation for a pet-friendly, helpful item, let us know. If you’ve discovered household tips for getting pet chores done or making life with a pet easier, please share.

In addition to posts, this is a friendly space to try out showing a personal photograph. Check out the Announcement about that and the How-Tos.

You have heard me talk about Jake. He is a 5 year old Lhasa Apso. We have him groomed monthly into what is called a puppy cut. If we would keep him in the traditional Lhasa Apso cut his hair would drag on the floor. Not a good thing with carpet even though they don’t shed. It would tangle his hair.

He is a typical Lhasa anything has to be his idea. Anything new he must check to make sure it is ok. All boxes or bags on the floor must be investigated first by him. He will not let us move it until it has passed his inspection.

He is a clown and plays with his toys not only for his pleasure but to entertain us.

Sometimes being curious gets him into trouble. He was up on my chair in the office and it turned around so he couldn’t get down. I was in another part of the house and heard him do his soft bark that he uses with his toys or when he wants something. I didn’t go see what was happening until it went on for a while and discovered he couldn’t get down.
Here is his Christmas picture that his groomer took.

He has a good listening vocabulary and knows when we spell mail what it means even though we didn't teach him.

Sammie

Postby Harriet » Tue Jul 22, 2008 10:37 pm

Sammie is a Nearly German Shepherd who handles the guard duty and lawn escort service around here. She patrols day and night. She is a very outdoorsy type and prides herself on speed. She can hear moles underground to track them and has rid our property of them. She recommends Milk Bone dog biscuits, but will politely bring Meaty Bones back to the step and deposit them there in case we want them – she doesn’t. Her favorite thing is a stick that someone else wants. Tip – she’s taught me that dogs with heavy coats should be brushed as far away from house as possible, not the porch.

Sumo

Postby Harriet » Tue Jul 22, 2008 10:38 pm

Sumo is a tabby cat of venerable age, about 19, but even though her activity has slowed, she's kept her pretty face and alertness. Tabbies are long cats in the first place, and she has also been very large all her adult life. She turns her forepaws in, shoulders forward for balance, making her resemble a sumo wrestler ready for a match. She weighed 32 pounds at her largest, took her vet’s weight loss advice and lost 10 pounds.

Tip – large or long cats need larger litter boxes. The bottom of a Rubbermaid small underbed storage box works best for Sumo, keeping everything as clean as both kitty and owners would like!

your animals are darling!!!!
I don't know how to post pictures but I have 2 female dogs (1 lab 3 (loves to be sprayed with the hose, 1 lab/shep mix 2 (dd12 adopted)... likes to chew on the other lab and chase the cats), both black. 2 male cats.. gray 11 outside barn kitty living in the city now, and black cat (dd12 adopted after her kitty got killed by coyote) inside cat always yearning to be outside 6 or 7, 1 siberian hamster, 1 parakeet blue (name keeps changing.. dd12 now calls him fred)
also we just acuired my husbands favorite animal... dd12/18 found a duck decoy on the shore and brought it home... naming it henry (yes a decoy), dh likes this as it never messes, doesn't require vet bills, and stays where ever you put it.

Orphan Cat is a delicate thing. She is handicapped from birth with part of one forepaw missing, so she limps, but very gracefully. When she sits upright, she places the small paw over the other primly. She is soft-furred and puts up with all kinds of attention without letting it upset her. When first discovered, the vet who checked her thought she might have a mental defect, because she allowed him to hold her down on her back. We prefer to think she is just agreeable.

She sheds and is still capable of jumping onto any furniture, which I don't even remember with Sumo, so the tip she’s taught me is regular swiping of her favorite spots with a lint roller. She is the reason I don’t leave quilts horizontal often! Sometimes she finds a folded one and gives me the above look.

Peppersmall.JPG

This photo is quintessential Pepper. (1) Pepper loves being outdoors! Dd12 took this photo at the local arboretum. (2) Pepper loves chasing balls, the softy soccer ball at the bottom of the photo being a well-loved favorite. (3) Pepper has her characteristic head tilt in this photo. When you talk to her, she perks up her ears and cocks her head to her left as if trying to understand what you're saying. It is a very endearing trait! Pepper is our 2.5 year old English Labrador Retriever. English labs tend to be shorter, stockier, and calmer than their American counterparts. Pepper has a wonderful temperament, being very friendly, very gentle, not hyperactive (as some labs might tend to be) and over-the-top happy. She is truly the happiest creature I've ever met! Her tail wags almost nonstop much of the day. Her most special talent however is eating her meals in about 15 seconds flat. Maybe less. . .She rings a bell by the door when she wants to go out b/c she won't bark in the house.

Helia...I thought Sadie TWD was the only one to "inhale" her food  Next time she eats, I'll time her and let you know the results LOL Thanks for the explanation of the two different types of labs. I always wondered why some were shorter than others, and I've been around a lot of labs in my life.

Forgot to add...I love seeing everyones' pets. Makes me want to send dog bones and cat nip to all

Here's hoping I can get Macs and Moses uploaded!

Moses is a drop-dead gorgeous Golden Retriever boy. He loves snuggling in bed (especially if he can put his big furry head on the pillow!) and getting wet, either in a nasty little stream or in his wading pool, when we will allow it. His favorite toys are tennis balls....lots of them! (We often joke about the greenish-yellow "growth" in his mouth cavity because he grabs a ball whenever he greets us, just in case we'll throw it for him.) Moe is getting a little gray around his snout; we don't know how old he is because he came to us as a stray (unbelievable!) There's a picture of Moses in the dictionary next to the definition of "good dog." He thrives on attention and has settled into the role of the #2 dog, after a difficult adjustment period. He came to us in January, 2003, when Macs was 19 months old, and thus settled as the alpha. Moe weights about 75 pounds.
