I'm impressed at the stuff getting done, Lynlee and Nancy. Lisa that apron is the cutest thing. I bookmarked it for later. I wish I could wear my aprons in the summer months. An extra layer is too hot.

LynL. I need to try some thing like that with all these granny squares!

Started the camo project last night.
Picked up the other project squares and stowed 'em in the tote
in my creativity room.

I watched nanny Mcphee the first one while I got the progress on the yard projects here.

I was delighted to get to see helia's daughters and their creativity in photographs in the Posting Members Only in Emptynester's She Pics thread.

helia, your older daughter's bowls are fascinating - yes, very shiny surfaced, which is unusual for polymer. And your younger daughter must have been sewing so much to have so many pretty purses there, several different types. I quickly called dd12 to come see.

I enjoyed the apron link, Lisa. Liked that ruffled flounce at the bottom a lot. Liked the shape of pocket and neckline of course - a favorite. Excellent photos to show how to add trim. I'm thinking that pattern could be sized for larger waists by just adding to each skirt edge if several inches was needed, or adding a complete strip down the middle of the pattern before cutting if only an inch or two was needed.

I wear loose cotton dresses often in the summer and an apron doesn't add much weight. But then, I am several hundred miles north of Florida where Harmony is!

Sunny, while you are incognito on your 'puter we are thinking of you and your quilt progress.

I'm glad the apron link was liked. I myself have printed it and have added it to my to do list.

Answers will be appreciated on the easiest way to cut an 18 and a half inch square on an 18 x 12 inch cutting mat with a 12 and half inch sized ruler (this is the largest one I have so far). .

My plan is to get a larger cutting mat and a 6 x 24 inch ruler in the near future, which I think will more or less complete my basic requirements of rulers/mats.

Let's see - first cut an approximate square that you know is too large, so that you won't be working with an awkward amount of cloth. I'm assuming your mat has an extra 1/4-inch margin all around its grid. So an easy way to do this is by tracing the OUTSIDE of your cutting mat onto the wrong side of fabric around 3 of its sides (short, long, short), then moving the mat sideways 6 inches and tracing the rest of the square. Check the square and as long as it measures larger than 18x18 all 'round, cut out on the lines with scissors, squaring corners instead of curving them like the mat.

Fold your fabric in half with wrong side out, then line up the short edges with the 2 short edges of your MAT, and use your ruler to cut perfectly at the 2 GRID edges to make your first 18-inch measurement. Then bring the folded edge perfectly in line with one long edge of the GRID and use any stiff long straightedge to TRACE with a pencil at 9 inches (you might have to make tic marks on the margin of the mat at the 9-inch marks to do this easily). Then cut using the drawn line and it won't matter that the ruler is too short, because the drawn line is your guide now and the cotton fabric surfaces will "grip" enough to keep things stable. That should create an 18x18 square.
