"It is a happy talent to know how to play."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

What are you playing at lately? In what activity are you finding whimsy and creativity?

We hope you'll join us in this thread - we'll sit and create together, show off our work to each other! Let us know what projects you're starting, continuing or releasing.

July was full of creative ideas.

Harmony made a pattern from a friend’s quilted cake carrier.
Lynlee made more granny squares and used her computer to mock-up a plan for her project.
Nancy tried out the broom stick crochet stitch and worked on shawls and scarves.
Sunny and her dgd finished the top for their quilt and Sunny rediscovered a yarn UFO to enjoy later.
helia’s dds12 and 14 displayed their creativity at an Art Fair and her dd12 attended sewing camp.
BookSaver altered skirts and pondered hat-making.
Indiana knitted in preparation for newborns on the way.
LisaB went to a craft fair in Pretoria.
Harriet and dd11 made a pincushion of cotton scraps.

Harriet, I'm glad you and dd11 had fun with the yo-yo gadget.

I did get the 3 skirts altered by closing the side slits down 6". They still have plenty of walking ease in them, plus now my slip won't be hanging out.

I found fabric for the hat but have to postpone making it. The vintage 1930s pattern was given to me and has 4 very cute styles included. Unfortunately, half of the pattern pieces were NOT included, nor were the instructions. I hoped I could figure out a couple of the styles, but the missing pattern pieces included all of the ones for the lining/base which is the same for all 4 styles.

I did a Google search for 1930s hat patterns and found a site that supposedly shows the full texts of both a late-1920s millinery book and one from the mid-1950s. I ran out of time but will soon investigate further. Maybe one of them will have a similar enough style that I can fake the base for my pattern.

I'm nearing the end of the current red child's prayer shawl project
hoping to be done with it this week.

Time to think about what to do after that.

Nancy, you get so much done! That was a good idea to remove all projects from the front rooms of your house except the one you are working on at the time.

BookSaver, does the pattern have line drawings of the pattern pieces that you could enlarge to help you?

Here is the old-fashioned style pincushion dd11 and I made of tiny old scraps, some vintage. It is 4.5 inches across and 1.75 inches high. I don't know what to call it - segmented? And here is the pattern/tutorial we used to make it (this lady used modern artsy fabrics - very cool).

We're trying to decide whether this would be a gift we could assembly-line for Christmas presents. It was great fun and pretty easy UNTIL we got to the embroidery floss/button part, and then you kinda needed 3 hands and a lot of strength. DD had to give up and I had to get a rubberized jar opener to grip the needle to pull through for the last few times.

The two small florals in blue and green were gifts from my dfirstmil in the 1970s. The blue circle image fabric is a gift of a vintage fabric scrap from an elderly lady in our congregation - no telling how old. The others were dd11's choices from my scrap basket. I think the yellow color really gives an old-fashioned feeling. So much fun to use up little scrips and scraps! :)

BookSaver, was it you who recommended the yoyo maker? I wish I bought the next larger size, I think, because this "small" makes a very dainty size (there is also an "x-small" ). Otherwise, fun and helpful, and perfect for this project. The tutorial shows 2 buttons instead, but I'd seen this done on Etsy and liked it.

So cute!
I had a flannel pillow like that once.

Finished the child's size prayer shawl.
Might make another one like it.

Today I had a melt down over lack of play time
like my free day Friday used to be for me.
So this is on my mind.

Got some play time in today yea!

Now I'm trying to think how to do up a bag for a walker;
maybe of granny squares with crocheted ties on them.
Any ideas links or photos for this would be greatly appreciated!

((Nancy)) I am SO with you on that. It just seems like circumstances conspire to keep me unable to have time for large projects. And this is over years by now. I was so grateful lately for time for just a pincushion and bookmark with dd. I used to get quilts done! I know you must feel the same.

Lynlee, I'm sure the squares must look so pretty laid out on the bed! It would seem to me that joining together will be satisfying, watching it grow part by part.
