from cynthia ewer

Week Nine at the Holiday Grand Plan, Pantry Week, finds us still in the kitchen.

This week, we focus on food storage, the pantry and any additional closets. Taking time to declutter, deep-clean and organize these storage areas will pay off when holiday baking begins.

Holiday prep chores this week see us begin to address Christmas cards, continue to work on holiday gifts, and start thinking about Thanksgiving dinner.

Pantry Week

Cleaning/Organizing Area: Pantry and Closets

Pantry / Additional Closets
Holiday Prep

Make one batch of Holiday Goodies.(I don't do this until end of November - we have thieves ;)
Make one extra meal for freezer again labeled HOLIDAY MEAL. (I start this next week)
Buy two canned food items from menus (get 2 of each item, one to use and one to donate to food drive).-( i start gathering my baking stuff, extras for closet of dog food/cat food/laundry detergent etc. so that we don't have to go to the store when people are crazily shopping)
Buy 1/8th of TO BUY gifts. Save all receipts, note return policy before buying. Ask for gift boxes.(I have a long 3 x 5 card file and have my receipts under xmas receipts)
Wrap and label packages. If needing to ship, get some shipping boxes now and store packages in them.
Work at least 1 hour a day on homemade gifts.
Start addressing Christmas cards and writing Christmas letter.
Find family photo suitable for inclusion with Christmas card. (we need to plan this)
Involve the whole family. Do not seal cards yet, keep them in a box in alphabetical order, as you think of things that you want to say to them pull out the card and add a note.
Send invitations for Thanksgiving.(i don't do this as my d sis in law does thanksgiving)
Prepare for special needs-extra beds, babies? (this is the week I make up cards for tips for helpers)
Buy extra batteries (check gifts). (dh always does this)
Order turkey. (I am making a turkey next monday as to try my moms turkey)
it is always a joy to be here with you!

Pam's poem from
Pam young and Peggy Jones
Sidetracked home executives

"twas the night before Christmas, not long ago.
We were sidetracked then, as you now know.
The stockings weren't hung by the chimney like most.
the presents weren't wrapped; no chestnuts to roast
The children were sleeping in summer pyjamas,
'cause the box full of flannels was over at Grama's.
With dad in his T-shirt, and I in one too.
I just couldn't sleep. I had too much to do.
For out on the lawn was a horrible clutter,
'Cause two days before I had cleaned out the gutter
To see if the Christmas-tree lights were still there.
Now the lawn was a mess, but the gutter was bare.
The moon on the breast of junk on the lawn
Caused me to know I'd be up until dawn.
Away to the kitchen I flew like a flash!
Tore open the oven, where the dishes were stashed.
I pulled out the dishes, turned the oven on bake.
I had nut breads and cookies and puddings to make.
I opened the freezer and filled up with fear.
for what to my wondering eyes should appear?
But the turkey, still frozen-how could I forget?
My excuse was a good one: I must be St. Nick!
More rapid than eagles I shut the door.
I sobbed and whimpered and fell to the floor.
With the wink of an eye and the twist of my head.
I figured I'd bag it and flop into bed.
But then in a twinkling I heard a small knock.
It was sissy. She lived down the street just a block.
She was dressed all in fur from her head to her boots,
and she carried a basket of half-eaten fruits.
"Why are you dressed like the jolly old elf?"
And I laughed when I saw her, in spite of myself.
She spoke not a word but went straight for my throat,
and then what she said, I don't think I should quote!
"I came over to tell you the kids wrecked my fruit.
"And I haven't finished your gift, it's a suit.
"oh sissy, she wailed, "I'm really behind.
" I've got cards to address and stockings to find."
"your holiday centrepiece isn't so jerky;
"it won't matter anyway; we don't have a turkey!
"it's frozen and Im so ashamed and upset.
"Christmas is not what I want to regret.
"I want to have order and peace in this place
"have laughter and signing, a smile on my face."
Laying a finger aside of our nose.
We vowed we would change from our heads to our toes.
We sprang to our senses and both gave a whistle.
Our hairdos both looked like the down of a thistle.
But we knew very soon in some wonderful way
The answer would come on one glorious day!
You can hear us exclaim, though were out of your sights.
"merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"

this reminded me of when I would over-goal and want a 15 Christmas out of ten. It always brings me back to that time and it now makes me smile and start thinking realistically
it is always a joy to be here with you!

Thinking about holiday activities we might want to see the lights w kids.

I need to get a holiday binder set up not sure which one yet but I am sure I have one here I really thnk I only need a section in the regular one bc we have simplified so much.

Thanks for your notes on the week. Poem is funny. I might send that to dd37.

HRH sent both dd37 and ds32 an email with Santa cartoons asking for their gift lists for the children to come to us early this year.

Ds believes that there will be no party with the first-in-laws this year, and if that is true, that's 11 gifts that will suddenly not be needed this year. Not to buy, to wrap, to carry, etc. It's not that less work won't be welcome - the party was getting out of hand. But it will make for a lot fewer things under our tree as far as decorating and how it looks.

(not a biggie to me at all, but I was shocked that one great-niece for whom I shop so carefully every year was extremely rude to me twice at dfirstmil's funeral. She is about 12, I guess. Maybe she has turned 13. Does she not recognize me without a gift in my hands? lol Maybe someone's already told her we won't be having a party so she's not wasting any effort.)

About cards - I hope the printer does what you and your dd expect blessed and you enjoy sending. I don't guess dd19 will have time to sketch a pretty Christmas card for us. She did it that one year, slightly washed with watercolors, and it was so nice. But never since has she found time to get one done. Or maybe she did but wasn't happy with them. We did it with Zazzle online that year.

Rudolph Day today I was knitting away and had to rip back a few row to do finishing decreases on the blue scarf it is done now. Started a pink one. Big chunky yarn that knit up fast. I had for a diff project that failed.

Rounded up cards and tags got them off the living room surface. Found sage green journal and a larger one in neon green to consider for holiday control journal. Was hoping I had a red one on hand but no luck.
