Art, Craft and Needlework, October 2019

Postby Harriet » Tue Oct 01, 2019 12:23 pm

I often hear that people feel guilty taking time for themselves to craft. Now, we all know that’s crazy talk.

How do you feel when you haven’t been creative or made something for a while? Does your tetch-o-meter swing to major grumpiness? (Maybe that’s just me!)

The first thing is to recognise how crafting makes you feel, and how important it is to you to feel that way. Dissolve any guilt about spending time looking after yourself.

- Moira Fuller, Craftiosity Newsletter (UK)

Oh my goodness, we must avoid major grumpiness at all costs! ("tetch" is an old-English word for bad-tempered and irritable)

Be sure to get some creative time in during October for a happy, contented household!

Let us know your artistic doin's!

I get grumpy when I go in my crafting room and things are a disarray, no semblance of order.
So I know I need to pay attn. To this zone in Oct.
Not just sew. But do pupa as well.

*** I did it got that sewing planner with vintage simplicity pattern illustrations @ Joanns, it was on sale without a coupon I saved apx $20 on it.
Undated, has a projects section reference section with info., pockets etc. I put a pic. On fb of it with a couple of other books. ***

The projects build up in my brain when I don't do something creative. And if there's one project that I know will be difficult or time consuming I tend to procrastinate getting started. I get to thinking, "I can't do THAT". And it bothers me to no end.

Of course, this time, when I got one project started finally another project took its place in the queue. (Incidentally, that's the oddest spelling of a word in the English language!)

I have my entire quilt cut out. I'm working on figuring out placement. Not a hard pattern, but I'm not that experienced. Squares and sashes etc. DGD wants a pillow to match also and I found a pillow form in my closet. Maybe I'll make something more intricate for that. After all this sewing, I'm getting more of a feel for the cutting and figuring out stuff in my brain. It's about time!

Saturday evening late: I finished the quilt top. I still haven't figured out how I want to quilt it.

I just spent a very enjoyable couple of hours stamping. It's good to get in some creative time. I'm not that thrilled with what I did, but still it's something. I loved using my new toys - two new stamp sets and two new die sets.

We've been working in the shop, building something to give 2 of the grandsons for Christmas. Much lumber work, sanding, painting, sanding, more painting, more sanding... and still not done. I'll tell y'all what it was after Christmas. I'm not absolutely sure DD doesn't look in here.

I did get my quilt top 'sandwich' made and I read every magazine and quilt book I had to get ideas how to do the quilting. Figured it out and now all I have to do is the actual sewing.

I have been painting seasonal decorative signs on wood scraps just for fun.

I have the quilt machine quilted 1/2 done. This old machine of mine keeps humming along. I suspect there's no plastic parts, all metal, except for the case. I've had it about 49 years now.

I didn't think the walking foot was doing much of anything and watched a couple videos. Yes, installed correctly. But I have to agree with one poster who said they don't do much of anything and are gimmicky. I keep using it because "they" say we're supposed to.

Not doing anything fancy, none of that free motion quilting stuff. Just diagonal across the whole thing then diagonal the other way. It's beginning to look like a real quilt now.

Tuesday: thought I had the top finished today but measuring the stitches showed me they are too far apart for the batting I used. So I fixed that with a whole lot of in-the-ditch sewing. Never did that before. I got better as I went along. All that's left is the border parts.
