Harriet's Hot Wassail for Christmas (Deep Pink color)

1 lg bottle cranapple juice
1 lg can pineapple juice
2 to 3 peppermints
1 doz. whole cloves
1 orange, peeled into a cube and sliced
cinnamon stick (optional)
pineapple ring (optional)

Slice the orange cube along the horizontal – so that membranes look like spokes of a wheel. Stick cloves decoratively into 3 or 4 of those slices. Blend juices together, drop peppermints and optional cinnamon stick in (children adore doing this part), float orange slices on top, along with optional pineapple ring. Bring to a boil (microwaving is fine and gets out of the way of the busy stove). Keep warm, have ladle handy

French Vanilla – Suisse Mocha Mix

I like General Foods International Coffees. I use the sugar free which is 30 calories per serving.

I found the French Vanilla too sweet and the Suisse Mocha too chocolaty.

I started mixing 2 parts French Vanilla to 1 part Suisse Mocha. It was excellent.

Now I mix 3 parts French Vanilla to 1 part Suisse Mocha. It is has a hint of chocolate and is just right.

Try mixing a ratio of one to one and work up to what tastes good to you.

It is a great treat on a cold evening.

"Sassy Water"

A Prevention Magazine recipe by Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD

As Prevention states it:


Sassy Water

2 liters water (about 8 1/2 cups)
1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger root
1 medium cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced
1 medium lemon, thinly sliced
12 mint leaves

Combine all ingredients in a 2-quart pitcher, chill in the refrigerator, and let flavors blend overnight.



They say it helps calm and soothe the GI tract, flushes out fluid, reduces water retention and encourages drinking water instead of other, less healthful drinks.

By mint leaves, btw, they say they just mean the regular packaged ones you find in produce sections of groceries with other herbs.

Now, HRH does not like this much cucumber in it and says it tastes a lot better with only half as much cucumber. I do wash the lemon and cucumber with a veggie wash and then don't bother peeling the cucumber. I definitely peel the ginger. I pour the water over the other ingredients in a pitcher that has a straining top (ice strainer) for convenience BUT it's very pretty in a clear pitcher if you wanted to serve to someone who is suspicious! :D I think anyone would want a taste of something that looks this attractive.

Blackberry Banana Smoothie

1 cup frozen pieces of banana
1 cup fresh blackberries
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup skim milk

Place into a blender & mix together. Makes 2 servings.
Yum!! :)

**Be careful about stains from the blackberry juice -- I rinsed my sink right away after cleaning the blender.

You could use fresh or frozen fruit in this; it's what I happened to have on hand & the frozen bananas eliminated the need for ice cubes. Yogurt I used was low fat.

This turned out very thick like a milkshake; you could add more skim milk if you don't like it that thick.

Pooja's Basic Hot Chocolate

1 cup unsweetened almond milk
2 TBSP pure unsweetened cocoa powder (I used Hershey's)
2 teaspoons (or to taste) pure maple syrup

In a small sauce pan, heat almond milk over low-medium heat. Turn heat to low, add cocoa & maple syrup & gently mix together using a small whisk. Whisk until fully incorporated & slightly frothy. Pour & enjoy hot.

Coconut Pumpkin Smoothie

1 c. cooked pumpkin or squash
dash pumpkin pie spice
dash of cinnamon
splash of milk
1/3 c. or less of coconut milk
Sweeten to taste { I used one packet of Splenda}.

Pour ingredients in blender and mix until the consistency of applesauce.

Sprouts and Greens Purple Smoothie

1/2 cup broccoli (or other) sprouts, packed
1 cup of kale or mixed greens
1 cup of romaine lettuce
1 tbsp flaxseed meal
1/2 cup nut milk (almond, soy, cashew)
1/3 cup pomegranate juice
1/2 small banana
1/2 cup frozen blueberries

blend well in a blender or "bullet" type processor.

This is dd's combo of green-drink ingredients. She says watch out for blueberries in a smoothie because they do become extra staining, so drink through a straw to avoid a purple mustache. She makes this every time she is home. It's similar to some of Dr. Fuhrman's blended salad recipes from his books.
