2013 FOCUS - Kitchen - 10/14/13 - Fourth Round

Postby Harriet » Mon Feb 25, 2013 7:33 am

Here are Indiana's steps to a clean kitchen, from February 28, 2009

As we continue to maintain our homes, the key is maintaining our homes through out the year instead of a full deep cleaning once or twice a year.

Adjust the outdoors to fit your home.

Not all the things listed need to be done this round. Some may be done daily, weekly, monthly, every 3 or 6 months or yearly. Look at each area with fresh eyes to see what should be done this round.

Kitchen

Wipe up spills while fresh in kitchen - daily
Sweep kitchen floor - daily

Clean ovens -quarterly.
Organize pantry, discarding expired food -quarterly.
Replace baking soda in refrigerator and freezer - quarterly.
Remove contents of cabinets and clean interiors - quarterly.
Wipe kitchen ceiling - quarterly.
Wipe the inside of the refrigerator - quarterly.
Repairs – either repair or put on a list for the future
Buy – replacements or something new if needed
Declutter – living room (next focus area) and post accomplishments in Harriet’s declutter thread. This is a great opportunity and will make maintaining the living room easier.

Re: 2013 FOCUS - Kitchen - 2/25/13 - First Round

Gave the kitchen a good once-over this week, finishing up with that today just before a small birthday party held here, so that was helpful. The first of the month came around, so the sink got it's first-of-month scrubbing right before tossing the old scrubber sponge for a new one. Not long after it's cleaning, we did have a boil-over in the microwave, so that is back to needing work! Oh well! I'm keeping areas clean with more regular attention, I think.

Second round in the kitchen is coming at a good time for me.

Having this as the Focus area for the week gives me the needed push to really scrub the floor all the way into the corners.

Also the top of the refrigerator needs attention, as well as the counter behind toaster and breadbox. You know, those places that "but first" need things moved out of the way before they can be deep cleaned.

We're supposed to have a couple of sunny days in a row. That will make it easier to clean. 8-)

Kitchen 3rd round.

Looks like my refrigerator needs a thorough cleaning this time.

I could tell during our party over the weekend that my kitchen has needed more attention recently than it has gotten. However, I did deep clean countertops ahead of any company's arrival. Happy that cabinets and refrigerator had had a recent organization. A funny was that right before the party, one of the little boys could not get a shorts button undone :( and had an accident in the bathroom despite his best efforts to avoid it. So dd33 truly felt she had to do a load of laundry quickly. So we were in the kitchen preparing and eventually having a buffet... ... right beside the humming washing machine! Oh well, that's why a washer-dryer set near the kitchen of the home is a mixed blessing. Love it for the continuity of the Morning Dailies, not so much for unexpected problems! Needless to say, both dd33 and I have vowed to shop Goodwills for an assortment of elastic-waists for the boys.

Our last main round of the year in our kitchens. I'm thankful I recently decluttered some of the countertops, so that those areas are a breeze to clean, but more effort is needed.

Do you tend to have more out on your countertops than you really need, causing them to be more time-consuming to clean? I remember on the old boards we used to have posts that gave a "tour" around the kitchen countertops listing every single thing that was there, and posters would be so honest! Toys often made their way into the list! ("Where did that yo-yo come from?") But it got us all thinking about whether we really needed everything "out".
