FOCUS - Office / Other room - 9/11/2012 Fourth Round

Postby Indiana » Sun Jan 25, 2009 1:27 pm

Please note there is a new format for this thread from last year.

As we continue to maintain our homes, the key is maintaining our homes through out the year instead of a full deep cleaning once or twice a year.

Adjust the rooms to fit your home.

Not all the things listed need to be done this round. Some may be done daily, weekly, monthly, every 3 or 6 months or yearly. I have marked possible times for doing the chore. Look at each area with fresh eyes to see what should be done this round.

As you do each room dust, vacuum, wash, wipe, wax, sweep, mop, detail, straighten, and declutter any surfaces that need to be done.

Office/Other room

  • Ceiling and corners - quarterly
  • Ceiling light - quarterly
  • Walls - quarterly
  • Doors and hardware – weekly (finger prints), quarterly
  • Door and floor trim - quarterly
  • Light switch - weekly
  • Dust lights - weekly
  • Dust pictures - weekly
  • Dust decorations – weekly
  • Wash decorations – quarterly if needed
  • Cold/hot air vents - quarterly
  • Window – quarterly if needed
  • Window treatments - annual
  • Dust furniture - weekly
  • Closet -quarterly
  • Floor – weekly
  • Throw rugs – weekly if needed
  • Wipe mirrors – weekly
  • Drawers, cupboards, and shelves – quarterly if needed
  • Trash - weekly
  • Manage clutter - daily
  • Equipment (computers, sewing machines, etc.) dust, clean - weekly
  • Sort mail - daily
  • Sort through in-boxes: pay bills, file paid bills and paperwork - weekly
  • Repairs – either repair or put on a list for the future
  • Buy – replacements or something new if needed
  • Declutter – closets (next focus area) and post accomplishments in Harriet’s declutter thread. This is a great opportunity and will make maintaining the closets easier.

Remember not all the things listed need to be done this round. Some may be done daily, weekly, monthly, every 3 or 6 months or yearly. Use the list as a guide.

Cleaned and disinfected my computer keyboard and mouse today according to instructions from How Clean Is Your House - small stiff brush dipped in 1/2 mouthwash, 1/2 warm water, wiping with a cloth every little bit as you go (computer turned off). I used the tiny brush that comes with men's shavers and clippers, but another would work as well.

Cleaned and decluttered one cupboard in the office. Still need to get the cupboards under the bookcases tidied, but have to get myself pysched up for it. I keep thinking they're worse than they probably are, so I'm eating the elephant one little bite at a time. I'm going to ask dd to straighten the cupboard up in the bonus room that has all the craft stuff in it.

my dh has the office and it is always spotless! but I don't go in there unless for books and encyclopedias. but my desk is dejunked. tossed lots of papers, lots. put 2008 the papers are now separate and put in box, and files are clear for 2009.
what I still need to do is unscramble the wires under the computer, move the desk and really clean behind there.
thank you both indiana for the focus and harriet for the decluttering focus.
my bedroom and closet still look great.

3 cheers* \o/* *\o/* *\o/* for lurky harriet indiana and all dejunking and focusing.
it is always a joy to be here with you!

The actual room called "office" in our home, dh's retreat upstairs, is in the last stages of a redo. We've all worked, but mostly credit goes to dstepson31 and dh. A great deal has gone to the landfill or been recycled. The room has been streamlined to just the most necessary desks for dh's bank of computers. At my suggestion, he bought velcro and another type of cord containment thing, so that cords will be up off the floor and vacuuming won't be tedius.

So this week we will be deep-cleaning the wall-to-wall rug and then moving some smaller things back. The window needs cleaning work!

Oops, looks like the days are zipping by so quickly that we missed last week!

Combine with this week's Focus or skip, it's your choice.
This system is fully flexible.
