The Productive Backyard, Winter to Spring 2009

I am going to go weed our yard a bit today. I am not much of a gardener and find it overwhelming but will try and clear out the beds. I wish I could find a to do list like take out weeds...prune bushes....plant ground cover,... I seem to always start off well but it always goes awry and I end up spending a lot of time standing and looking at what to do next. I am much better if I have a plan of action.

So, why not treat it like the project it is? Make that list! Make a nice cup of something to sip (I'd do coffee, but then, I love coffee), grab a pencil and a pad of paper, and go sit in a nice central area of your yard.

What hits you first....you know, that "oh my gosh, that needs to be done!" that hits you immediately. Write it down!

As you go, you will probably run into things that require previous steps, add those steps under the main chore
For Example:
The flower bed is an eyesore!
.....clear out dead plants
.....clear out weeds
.....buy (start) some flowers (or herbs, or small veggies)
.....work soil
.....plant
.....enjoy!

Just take some time to sit and mull over what needs to be done. That way you have a plan and you can always add to the list as you work on your list.

I've been working on the spring yard clean up
this month and have made good progress.
It's nearly time to begin planting.
Yesterday I did transplant some things.
It's going to be warm in the 80*s today and
tomorrow. Great weather for this!
I have found a new spot for the tomatoes
last year it was too shady where I had them
so decided I needed a new spot for them.

Harriet, if I plow marigolds into the ground will I have marigolds all through the vegetables? Probably!

I have happy news to report: the bean plants are covered with little teeny-tiny beans all over. I should get a few pickings from the bushes, and if they do well, that'll be a bunch!

My tomatoes are looking healthy also. I water them every day.

YAY for the victory garden!

I've been planting between showers.
Got sun flowers in various beds to see where they like it the best.
Some lettuce is in
and I"ll do more in a couple of weeks again for a staggered crop.
