Re: James Webb Space Telescope Tuesday
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope designed to conduct infrared astronomy. As the largest telescope in space, it is equipped with high-resolution and high-sensitivity instruments, allowing it to view objects too old, distant, or faint for the Hubble Space Telescope. This enables investigations across many fields of astronomy and cosmology, such as observation of the first stars and the formation of the first galaxies, and detailed atmospheric characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets.
The telescope is named after James E. Webb, who was the administrator of NASA from 1961 to 1968 during the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs.
Webb's primary mirror consists of 18 hexagonal mirror segments made of gold-plated beryllium, which together create a 6.5-meter-diameter (21 ft) mirror, compared with Hubble's 2.4 m (7 ft 10 in). This gives Webb a light-collecting area of about 25 m2 (270 sq ft), about six times that of Hubble. Unlike Hubble, which observes in the near ultraviolet and visible (0.1 to 0.8 μm), and near infrared (0.8–2.5 μm)[14] spectra, Webb observes a lower frequency range, from long-wavelength visible light (red) through mid-infrared (0.6–28.5 μm).
The telescope must be kept extremely cold, below 50 K (−223 °C; −370 °F), so that the infrared light emitted by the telescope itself does not interfere with the collected light. Its five-layer sunshield protects it from warming by the Sun, Earth, and Moon.

Re: James Webb Space Telescope Tuesday
Good morning, everyone, and happy Tuesday!
Gma, now there's an idea - different sweeties as a theme for a week. That could be very interesting, especially as iirc some bars had different names either side of the Pond!
Laura, Gma has some very good knowledge re nutrition. I know if I eat too much sugar, the. That can rebound and increase my anxiety, but I don't know why!
L.Ann, I've never tried freezing a milky way, although I do remember putting chocolate ite s in the fridge during hot summers. I must have been a relief all round when you finally got your braces off!
Helian, so wise to have a slower day after all the travelling.
Today I have to take Freddie to the vet for his injection for his arthritis. DH is WFH, so today would also be a good day to photograph the old office chair in the garage and send it to our neighbourhood WhatsApp group to see if anyone wants it. If not, then I'll try Nextdoor. Is like to do something in my garden if it stays dry, and a walk would also be good. We had more rain overnight, and it's looking very grey so far, but, as far as I can tell, not actually raining ATM.
Jude is enjoying a little time on her own on the bed without the others, getting my whole attention and all of the treats!

Dogged, that's very interesting ! On our estate the deeds to the houses state we're not allowed to hang laundry in the front garden. Although, in fairness, almost everyone has a back garden where they can hang as much laundry as they like.Doggedly wrote: Mon Jul 21, 2025 3:05 pm He helped me figure out how to put up the small privacy screen so that I can hang a small amount of handwashing outside and hide my nefarious doings (I live in a weird city that considers the sight of laundry drying outside offensive.)

Re: James Webb Space Telescope Tuesday
Back from the vet. Freddie spat at the vet, as well as the usual snarling and hissing, but no one was bitten or scratched, so I'm count it a win.
Having a late breakfast, then I'll see if I can do a little in my garden between the showers.

Re: James Webb Space Telescope Tuesday
I've done some deadheading in my garden, and messaged the council as they didn't empty our garden bin today.
(They emptied my neighbour's bin standing right next to it, but forgot ours.
. As we pay extra for the garden bins, it's a matter of principle that they're collected.) And I've taken photos of our old office chair and sent a WhatsApp to our neighbourhood group. Within a few minutes I had a reply from Dneighbour R - he thinks his wife might like it. His wife, C is a little disabled and struggles with the steps, so when R comes home he's going to come and have a look at it.
I'm the meantime, I need to start the housework!

Re: James Webb Space Telescope Tuesday
That is interesting info re: the Webb telescope, Kitty. Infrared astronomy is new to me!
In Australia, we once had a backyard party and left the clothesline up across the grass. Nothing hanging from it, just hadn't retracted it to hide it's existence. Apparently, that was a social faux pas, but we were given grace as we were new and still learning proper clothesline etiquette.
And Australians are friendly people.
It is sunny with a high of 82*F today. I'm heading out the door in about 10 minutes to have coffee with K. S2 is attending her son's swimming championships and J is out of town. After coffee, I'll pop by the house, do my back exercises, and then head to the park for a jog. Major progress on payroll exam prep needs to happen today. Tuesday dinner tonight is just our household - dh, myself, and housemate M. Dh is making a homemade chicken mole' recipe and we'll have some saute'ed veggies to go with it.

Re: James Webb Space Telescope Tuesday
Good morning, all. Thanks for the very interesting start, Kittykatt. I tend to confuse Hubble with James Webb, so the comparison was particularly helpful.
That is good news that you got such a quick response about your old office chair. Sounds like it will be off to its new home with minimum fuss.
That seems like a reasonable limit on the clotheslines kept to the back gardens. At least they offer an option.
Good boy, Freddie. Are you mellowing in your old age like Germane?
LOL, helia, we think of Australians as more down to earth, but I guess that pearl-clutching at the sight of a clothesline is pretty widespread.
Today's main goal is to bring Germane to the groomer this afternoon.
I lounged a little too excessively yesterday (no regrets) so I'll be doing basic cleaning and tidying after myself.
