Sunday Funday PWYC

Post by Twins' Mom »

What are you doing today for fun? Today is a day of worship for many, but I recall in P&P's BWP (basic weekly plan) the weekend contained a workday and a family fun day. I think that's correct? I'd need to pull out books to check.

Today is dh's retirement party here at the house, a family fun day for us with friends. I have a story about yesterday to tell...

We had a very unexpected late afternoon/evening. We saw Les Misérables starting at two p.m. yesterday. I was emotional, I had forgotten what a wonderful show it is. Emotion, love, moving musical score, French revolution, it all has it all.

Dh missed a phone call during the show and my phone rang when someone rang out doorbell. I had my ringer off but the darn phone rang on through my hearing aid and I nearly jumped out of my seat. After the show we went to a nearby bar/restaurant with A and V to get something to eat. There dh went to call back the call he missed - his best friend Ken from Vermont. And at the bar I checked the doorbell camera but didn't recognize the good looking couple on our porch on the camera.

Ken and his wife A had flown in for the party to surprise us but had the wrong day. So they showed up a 4 p.m. yesterday instead of today....

We agreed to see A and V another time, and walked to their hotel and spent the evening with them. We had dinner out and came back here for more talking. I enjoy these people so very much - there are dh's friends that I don't enjoy so much but these are warm, happy, easy people to love. Their daughter was due to be induced the 25th but had the baby early - their first grandchild, and they decided to come.

We sent regrets to the evening event yesterday, for Z's father.

Dfriend are leaving today at 1 - they could not reschedule fl

Anyway, I went to bed exhausted last night from the events of the day and just now got up....

Lots happening today:
Dh has a massage scheduled, he will do that they pick up dfriends at hotel and take them to airport.
Separately we'll make an appearance at the going away party for A and V's dd at temple around 1 p.m.
I MUST pick up script at CVS.
Catering staff will be here at 2:30ish to set up for party 4-7 here. They will clean up as well, and bag up any leftovers.

So it's a big day. I gotta get a list going and get busy with last minute things. Maybe some stashing and dashing, and I know I need to get out table clothes in case they're needed.

Twins - I am so very, very happy for you juggling such a variety of social interactions. You are truly excelling in planning and keeping track of every detail involved in hosting such a large group. Congratulations on being at the top of your game!

DD49 texted last night that she was returning DD14 here today. DD14 has another week before school starts so could stay with DD49 for more days, but for whatever reason that isn't happening. I'm pleased that DD14 seems to be okay and happy. DD14 has an appointment with her trusted counselor tomorrow to talk through anything that happened during that visit.

Recipe of the day = Tex-Mex Chicken & Rice . The online recipe isn't an exact match to the recipe in the cookbook, but it is close.

Temps today are over 100F again.....still....boring summer weather. I am looking forward to September when the temps will be cooler....maybe. October for sure!

LadyM, right now I'm not sure I feel that I'm juggling all this. I'll collapse after seven p.m. tonight. Anyone who is here after then to hang out with dh may find out that I'm going to bed to read and decompress. Tomorrow will be one of those Monday mornings that I don't want to talk to anyone.

The house is spiffed, counters cleared of most extraneous things. I'm depending on the catering people to tell me where is best for them to set up food and drink. I'm stressed about the size of our space and the the heat on the screened porch. I've turned the a/c down because the house will heat up later, and also because I'm sweating!

I'm running the dishwasher so it will be nearly empty and not stink. :x

Next up is shower for me, need to cool down slightly first.

Another day that is far too hot for Canada... Humidex is over 100 with the temp in the 90's. It might be higher than that but I don't want to look.

I got the back yard cut before noon. Dh said he might go out and do more later. I told him I didn't do behind the shed (2 strips with riding mower) and I didn't do the strip on the other side of the long fence between the fence and the field. I didn't do the front yard either. I don't think it needs it.

Dryer has some stuff getting unwrinkled and the washing machine had a forgotten load of wet stuff, so it's getting a rinse and spin. I am just going to sit here and scroll on FBook for a few hours... (Just kidding)

Dh is making supper. We are having ribs. I need to go to the store and get a package of cole slaw and possibly a package of cornbread "muffins" although they are rectangular instead of round. I'm just waiting for the pharmacy to text me that dh's meds are ready to be picked up. One trip to town instead of 2.

Twins', yes, it all sounds so celebratory and happy for dh. Good job.

I can see why you are stressed about the heat on the screened porch. I went out onto our screened porch and then out into the sun, with HRH just now, and what a rude awakening for both. The screened porch is just a sauna today - I think you said you had a fan, so that will make a big difference.

Ya'll would have been amused at my surprise when the hotter-than-hot sunshine actually fell on my head and the back of my neck. I've literally never gone out into such temp/sun without longish hair before, unless it happened when I was one year old. HRH was amused at me. "Now you see why bald men wear ballcaps!" True - I could see why anyone with no hair protecting the back of the neck, or even the shade from a bun of hair, would be clamoring for a hat of any kind. Pixie hair is not enough. I couldn't wait to find some shade, and I'm certainly not going back without a hat after another hour passes, another degree of temp or two, and we breach 100.

I had a smoothie that strayed far from my usual "recipe" for brunch. But it was good, however different it was. One good thing about a smoothie of fruit and greens - you can manage it from a somewhat bare cupboard, just say, "I meant to do that" and probably still have a nutritious one.

Lunch will be our leftovers from dd26' takeout gift yesterday. Looking forward to my second helping of Veggie Egg Fu Yung. There was so much broccoli, delish. Dessert will be the oatmeal-raisin cookies HRH bought at the hospital cafeteria.

Nancy, "a look and snif at the yard sale", lol. Hope ddoggo had lots of input to consider.

Cathy, hope you can combine trips out, especially since you've already done so much today.

LadyM, enjoy the extra time with your dd before school starts back. Yipes - the start of school! :o Hard to believe.

DangerBoy has to take possession of his college apartment August 1, so that makes an extra trip for he and his Mom. He doesn't actually start school until later in the month. They will take only furniture/possessions that are not precious or expensive on that trip. Another roommate may be staying during the bridge of time before semester starts anyway.

Our driveway has 3 extra pickups on it. Teens boys + Sunday free time = nonstop tinkering with something to do with trucks. They usually end up at the lake .....I need to quietly remind DS16 that being in lake water is NOT a good idea until he heals.

DS16 has 10 days of antibodies to take 4 times a day. That requires some doing to get all those done. IYKWIM. My solution that seems to be working is putting a 3x5" card & pen on the kitchen counter each morning to record when each of the 4 doses has been taken.

Skippable Garden chatter - The tomatoes have quit blooming in the high heat. That is to be expected. The green tomatoes already on the vine are growing and getting ripe like usual, but there are no new tomatoes forming. So far this year I have harvested 179 tomatoes. After the high heat is over, the tomato plants should start producing again for a couple of months for fall harvest. I normally have fresh tomatoes to eat until almost Thanksgiving.

Declutter/organize/cleaning effort for today = Bed sheets (fitted & flat) and pillowcases. Everything is organized now. Although I am failing at decluttering because I can't seem to reduce the number of pillowcases & flat sheets being kept. Those two items have uses beyond making the bed. For example= I use pillowcases to organize items in the chest freezer. It is a simple way to group items together in the smallest amount of space. The blue pillowcase has chicken. The brown pillowcase has tomatoes. Etc, etc, etc. The flat sheets are so useful in a variety of ways.
I might need intervention to declutter the pillowcases and flat sheets. In the meantime, I am pleased they are neat and organized.

DS16 and a friend have teamed up to talk me into letting him trade the Duramax for another vehicle. They probably wish I didn't ask logical questions which brings to light the potential trade isn't a great decision. FB marketplace is like an addiction for them. OH LOOOK - another old pickup that we should consider ....repeat a dozen times a week.
I find this favorite topic of theirs exhausting because I have ZERO interest in vehicles. Although, I am thankful that this is their addiction. There are worse things for teens to focus on.
