Yes... Indiana, I realized you were doing most of the work here... I should estimate my starches myself and let you check.
I don't know what I'm going to do to get rid of the starches. I mean, I try to eat more fruit/veg/etc... like tonight, I had a big salad before I ate my supper -- but I still wanted something sweet afterwards.
Mid-day, if I eat fruit, etc... I like it, but it just feels like it needs something else in my stomach.

I think when school starts, in some ways I'll do better. Less "loose" time to snack, more limits on choices.
But otoh, as Lynlee said in PWYC, as far as checking starches/etc online, once school starts I am so much more pressed for time. But I should be able to do it by the following day. If I can't get it done at night, I might could check during my prep period at school.
Tomorrow is another day.

OKay are you doing starches or carbs.
Arrggghhhh!! I'm not sure what I'm doing. HOWEVER....saying that....August is for me to learn..... so I best be getting to it.

What started me on using the carb count to figure the starches was when LucyLee chocolate was marked as a starch. I was confused because I had it in my head that starch = bread, pasta, rice, potato type food. So I decided to use the 15 carbs = 1 starch formula. Now I think I've messed everything up. ****sigh****

I'm sorry for making this harder than it should be, but honestly I'm frustrated with trying to get it simplified and cemented into my head.

Trying to get this into my head...
First I need to put the food into a category....starch, protein, fat, vegetable, fruit ?
THEN on the starch category the 15 carbs = 1 starch formula can be used?

Indiana - you deserve a huge POTB for helping us (me!!!). Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The good news is....even though I'm doing in wrong and haven't got it down pat.....I'm still losing weight!! Writing everything down and watching/limiting the starches is making a difference!! 3.6 lbs since August 1

lucylee I thought by you doing the starch count you will memorize the counts with out sitting down and memorizing them. As you discover one you could just write it down and you will have it.

8 starches should help with stretching them over the day. 2 at breakfast, 2 lunch, 2 dinner and 2 evening snack. So 1 for breakfast is your pb crackers, mid-day is granola, 2 lunch are triscuits, 2 dinner whatever depending what you are eating and that leaves 2 starch for at night for popcorn or whatever.

I posted some links in the diabetic thread that may help to count starches.

Maybe OKay has some ideas to help you with time since she works, has elder care, kids, and helps with the CW. She may have some tricks to be able to do it.

Keep going lucylee you will do better and better.

OKay you have been doing a wonderful job counting starches all along until you switched.

The reason I did the chocolate is it does have enough carbs to count as a starch because of the sugar content. Just like sweetened ice tea is counted a starch because of the sugar content.

Some candy instead of trying to find out what it is and what the breakdown is I compare it to 5 kisses.

5 kisses = 1 carb & 1 fat

Yes, starch does contain breads, cereals, grains, pasta, starchy vegetables, flours, crackers, and many snacks.

You haven’t messed anything up. Just go back to your original way of counting because that was the right way.

Right first you figure out if it is a starch, protein, fat, vegetable, fruit, or dairy. Then you can start subtracting carbs. One starch is 15 carbs. In the link I will post in the diabetic thread you will notice that other foods have carbs but are counted as different food groups even through they have a starch. The reason for the different food groups is just like the pyramid – for a balanced eating plan.

OKay you are doing so well. It is my pleasure to help. You are so very welcome.

I'll post a link to the chart for doing exchanges by hand in the diabetic thread. I’ll also add a few other links.

Congratulations on 3.6 pounds since August 1.

I hope I haven't confused you but helped make it clearer.

Now I'M confused. If 1 starch = 15 carbs, why I am I having to count 2 for my 13g granola bar and 1.5 for my 19 g pb crackers?

Sorry to confuse you lucylee.

I figured it once and never went back and checked it again. If your granola bar is still a Nature Valley Roasted Nut Crunch, with 190 calories, 6 g protein, 6g sugar, 14 fat, and 13 g total carbohydrates.

First we know that you have 1 starch with the 13 g carbohydrates, 3 of the protein, 1 fat and the 6 g sugar = 80 calories

So there are 4 g carbohydrates left.
3 g protein left
13 g fat

So if you have 14 g fat that is 3 fat = 135 .

135 + 80 = 215

So I know the calorie count is 190. 215 - 190 = 25 calories

I dropped the 25 calories which was easier that having point whatevers.

So new # for granola bar is 1 starch and 3 fat.

So the new count is 1 starch and 3 fat.

Sorry for the confusion. I'm surprised there is so much fat but it would be added fat and the nuts.

Although you dropped 1 starch the addition of 3 fat is rough but that will come later.

lucylee while you are getting comfortable with the counts please question my counts. I had limited time to do your counts so some of them I'm seeing I didn't do as I should have. I'm sorry for that. I'll do better.

Maybe it would help if I show a few more that I have done for things you eat all the time? Would that help?

SHEM

The second day of a diet is always easier than the first. By the second day you're off it. - Jackie Gleason

That is the difference between a diet to be used just when you gain - lose - gain, etc and a healthy lifestyle which is for the rest of your life. Ok off my soap box.

I am living a healthy lifestyle eating so far for 10 years and it will continue. My eating plan is something I can live with day in and day out for the rest of my life. I am at a point in it that I can have cake once in a while or a special treat - not often but once in a while.
