Wow! Lots of reading going on here. So many book recs that sound so good! Some of you are very prodigious readers!! I used to read a lot more. I think kids and life kind of stifled that. I hope to get back into reading more. So many good books out there!!
Harmony, you've read more Potok than I have. I've read The Chosen, My Name is Asher Lev, and 1/2 of The Gift of Asher Lev.
Caleb's Crossing sounds like an interesting story. I haven't read that author before.
I don't think I've read Jules Verne, though my ds has read a couple of his books. Nice to hear of fun reads!!
I really like Jane Austen, but yeah, the stories are all pretty similar in some ways. The daughter/s need to find husband/s.
Did the character become less annoying, elly?

helia, yes, the character did redeem herself by the end of the book. I didn't read much at all when I had children at home. I think I only read one book when they were young and that was during a week that I had jury duty! Once we shipped them off to college, I remembered that I love to read and have made up for the missed years!

Harmony, I will look for People of the Book. I also have read and enjoyed all of the Jane Austen books. She could have written for soap operas, if she lived in modern times.

Now I've pulled out a very thick book numbering 904 pages, not counting glossary of terms. Its title is The Art of the Short Story - 52 Great Authors, Their Best Short Fiction, and Their Insights on Writing, by Dana Goia and R. S. Gwynn. I enjoy the passion I have for writing short fiction stories and look so forward to reading this wonderful educational and inspiring book.

THE SEVEN SPIRITUAL LAWS OF SUCCESS - PRACTICAL GUIDE TO THE FULFILLMENT OF YOUR DREAMS (BASED ON CREATING AFFLUENCE), by Deepak Chopra. AND
HOW TO RAISE YOUR SELF-ESTEEM - THE PROVEN ACTION-ORIENTED APPROACH TO GREATER SELF-RESPECT AND SELF-CONFIDENCE, by Nathaniel Branden. (I plan on reading this 1 first, before the other.)
I love to read!
When Christmas or my birthday or Mother's Day comes, DD gives me book gift cards. I love her to pieces for that. It's a great way to buy nice journals on sale, too.
HAPPY READING TO EVERYONE!

The Devil in the White City --
true story about the architects of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair AND a serial killer who was active in Chicago at the same time. Fascinating.
I keep wanting to tell ddad stuff about the technical aspects of the planning and building... b/c he was a draftsman and builder his whole life, you know...
and the killer stuff is just amazing... he apparently had a Ted Bundy kind of persona -- women just swooned over him, it seems... and the hustle and bustle in the city of preparation for the fair apparently gave him much "cover" for his suspicious activities. It is kinda morbid and frightening to read... but fascinating.
It alternates chapters between the architects and the killer. There is no association between them -- except that they were both in Chicago at such an exciting time.

I liked the Devil and the White City d Lucy
I am reading a world lit only by fire (I like history and how all aspects of life intermingle; however, I don't care for the ruthlessness of men.)
