Update the tomato does have roots now!
I put it in a larger container water still.
These are above ground and struggling so I need to dig hole and plant them
and the one with roots. I have planted all the toms in the earth now.
Seeds did not come up except kale & Sunnies.
Kale plant I bought bugs have gotten to it.
So... I"m thinking what herb to companion plant with it.
Herb plants do pretty well here.
Lav. on the West hot side of the house is struggling.
Have to move the one tom. off the deck too hot there for it.
The other one keeps getting blown over so I need to plant both in dirt and
take em out of the pots.

Re: Raised Beds Gardening
I feel it with the rain, LadyM. We got a lot while I was away. Dfriend M has lots and lots of plants in pots because it's so hard to dig into the chert here. I looked at them with her yesterday and they're all drowning. This week I will endeavor to fill the other raised bed and get seeds into it for late zinnias. The tomatoes don't look like they grew at all while I was away, the parsley I planted looks stressed.
Local news said last night we've had 10 inches of rain this month, the record is 12, which we may get to. Supposed to be raining off and on today and overnight, and more later in the week.

Re: Raised Beds Gardening
Lady Mav, I love the way you list things!
Nancy, I find marigolds to be good for deterring pests for most all plants... but alliums - garlic, onion, leeks, etc - plus the herbs: dill, rosemary, and sage are good for deterring pests around kale.
Surprisingly, my little garden is doing very well in spite of the neglect. DH has been in and out of the hospital 5 times since early May so the garden has been left to its own devices. I'm pleased to say everything is growing vigorously and flowering with one little baby cayenne pepper showing itself. I was able to get a good portion of my homemade green stalk cut but haven't been able to put it together what with all that has been going on. The hospital is an hour away so there are no quick jaunts home, not to mention the doctors all seem to show up when I go to the cafeteria or for a little walk around the halls, so I tend not to leave at all.
The tower garden inside just finished up its sixth pepper harvest so I trimmed all of the pepper plants back to just a little stem with the plan to pull them out but a hospital visit derailed the plan. I think I'm going to leave them be since they are leafing out beautifully and I won't have to start fresh again. I also pruned back the basil that had all but taken over the entire tower and got a pint jar stuffed full of crushed, dried leaves. Now I'm just awaiting the last of the flowers to finish going to seed so that I can harvest the seeds. With all of that pruning, I can see the rest of the plants I have in there lol Peppermint, green and red cabbage, swiss chard, a tomato, and lettuces. I think I'll throw in a melon if we get to stay home this week.

We harvested the first of the green peas for this year. They went straight into the freezer.
