This is interesting.
Can someone explain the difference between carbs and starches? I always thought starches were carbs, but included in the carbs are sugary things, even fruit with their natural sugar, soda, candy, maybe even things like carrots and potatoes. Am I right?
Not typing my foods here, but noting that I did pretty well while away even eating more? But 1 day home and I got shakey again...I think I just am not eating enough things to hold BS and then the rush to eat whatever to bring it up..was interesting to me to see that.
I've gotten my mind wrapped around the "fact" that calories are the enemy and it keeps me from eating when I should, which results in snacking too much of wrong things...

Crunch was invented by celery sticks, carrots and cucumber, so consider them!
An evening salad bowl with favorites over a lettuce base can be downright LOUD with crunch, and sprinkles of cheese or even a little bacon pieces will make it savory/satisfying.
By the way, Cheerio is one of the hardest cereals to digest and one of the most likely to cause stomach cramps, so be careful eating too much of it. It is made as a raw batter and then steamed only. (The extra vitamins are sprayed on at the end of the process.) Oats cooked with water into oatmeal don't cause cramps.

Harmony, you've got it right - the difference to watch is the one between complex (good) and simple (bad) carbs. Starches are one type of carbs and they are found in all cereal grains, as well as roots and tubers.
This is from About.com
Simple Carbs
Simple carbs such as candy, sodas and juice are quickly digested and can be used immediately for energy. However, they also spike blood glucose levels, which inevitably leads to a crash when your blood sugar drops. Simple carbs (such as honey) can be an ideal choice just before an intense cardio workout like sprints, but they're not a great choice for snacks or meals since they can leave you hungry and tired.
Complex Carbs
Complex carbs take longer to digest and come from things like whole grain products, vegetables, and fruits. They are slowly released into the body, unlike simple carbs, so you don't get that sugar rush followed by the painful sugar crash.
Regardless of the type of carbs you eat, all are treated the same way in your body--they are all broken down into sugars during digestion. But, complex carbs are almost always the best choice because they are naturally low in fat, high in fiber and provide tons of vitamins and minerals.

I can't eat Cheerios. That is interesting to read how they are made. They are my all time favorite food. I could live on them, any flavor, and any kind of milk on top, and sometimes with a banana. But for some reason they don't digest. I get instant heartburn. Bummer!

Ugh! Wish I could pretend yesterday eating didn't happen.
What I ate Friday Aug 6th = 10.6 starches
1.6 starches - Fiber Bar @ 6am
0.0 starches - Coffee, black
0.0 starches - Pecan halves (4) & dried Cranberries @9am
0.0 starches - Tea, unsweetened (mixture of green-n-black tea) which I drink until supper
0.0 starches - Turnip Greens, Artichoke dip, shrimp, spicy fish fillet, clam chowder @ noon (Golden Corral)
8.0 starches - Pizza (3"x3" thin crust - 8 pieces) @5pm
1.0 starches - Bday cake (I just took one bit of LO's cake to see what it tasted like)
0.0 starches - grape juice (1/2 cup)
the sodium in yesterday's food was OFF THE CHART and the scales reflect it this morning. All the weight I lost last week showed back up this morning...plus .2 lbs. ***sigh****
I'm definitely not happy about it, but I'm not giving up. It is a rare day where all the events happen like yesterday (LO well baby doc appt, payroll, DGS15 & DGS13 under my care and 2 back to back gatherings at our home in the same evening). At 5pm we had 3 generations (12 family members) here to celebrate LO birthday (pizza, cake, ice cream served). At 7pm we had the Friday Night Gang (11 friends) here and served them cake/ice cream. It was a frenzy to prepare for these while working payroll too. I had one hour (4pm-5pm) to pick up DGS's then get decorations (balloons, table cloth, bday plates/cups/napkins/hats/etc), the punch & Ice cream, order & pick up the pizzas and drive 33 miles.....oh in that one hour I also had to decorate the table & house. FRENZY and my eating followed that same frenzy. I just kept picking up a piece of pizza and kept moving. The pizza pieces didn't seem to add up until later when i sat and thought about how many I ate Argh.
