The Milky Way or Milky Way Galaxy is the galaxy that includes the Solar System, with the name describing the galaxy's appearance from Earth: a hazy band of light seen in the night sky formed from stars in other arms of the galaxy, which are so far away that they cannot be individually distinguished by the naked eye.

The oldest stars in the Milky Way are nearly as old as the Universe itself and thus probably formed shortly after the Dark Ages of the Big Bang.

Galileo Galilei first resolved the band of light into individual stars with his telescope in 1610. Until the early 1920s, most astronomers thought that the Milky Way contained all the stars in the Universe. Following the 1920 Great Debate between the astronomers Harlow Shapley and Heber Doust Curtis, observations by Edwin Hubble in 1923 showed that the Milky Way was just one of many galaxies.

Good morning, everyone, and happy Monday!

Congratulations mastering that lawnmower, Laura!

WTG returning all the work equipment, Dogged. It must be good to have that off your mind.

CL, you sound busy as always. Did you enjoy your England trip?

Gma, that was very interesting to read about your family association with Spam! I don't remember my mother every using it in meals at home, but it was served on occasion for school lunches, and I have to admit I liked neither the taste nor the texture. And I do remember how salty it was, and that really bright pink colour!

Today we have a misty start (unusual for July, more common in September!) and the forecast on is saying light rain. Someone in is supposed to be continued to pick up the old desk around 1pm so I need to be at the front of the house then. Apart from that, DH goes to the office as usual, so hopefully it will be a normal Monday! I really need to have a good session in the spare room today. DH hasn't finished in there yet, but he has promised me everything he hasn't sorted through yet will be contained in in a crate, so that should be easy for me to move.

If it stays dry, then I would like to work in my garden this morning - at least after all the rain I won't have to water anything! A walk would be good too (either first thing, or wait until the desk has been collected?)

Good morning kittykatt, thanks for the start. WTG getting rid of the old desk. For any kid in France Milky Way means the chocolate treat, everyone is very surprised later on to discover that it means something entirely different for millions of people

Rainy Monday morning, it looks like September. Typing on mobile phone at payroll

TADAs
Up, morning rush, quick bfast with MrNG
25 minutes commute
Almost full morning at payroll already

TODOS
Day at payroll
Make sense of my usefulness or not doing my current job
Commute back, enjoy time home

Good morning, FFB! (It's still just morning here! ) That is so funny about the Milky Way chocolate bar - I remember the adverts on TV where it was claimed to be "the sweet you can eat between meals without ruining your appetite!". Hmmm, I'm not sure they could get away with that today! I remember you mentioned your DKids didn't speak good English yet. Are you able to pick me up CBBC at all? (Children's BBC TV channel). They show age appropriate tv programmes, with no adverts ! A Dutch girl I knew years ago had learned a lot of her English thought listening to and watching the BBC. Of course, these days there's always YouTube, but, I feel the content isn't always appropriate, and, of course, there's the adverts (and, in my experience, kids can very quickly learn how to get round parental "blocks" unless the parents stay one step ahead all the time. It must be exhausting!)

You and I are weather twins today. I just felt the first spots of rain as I was finishing up in my garden, and it's now raining steadily. At least it's gentle, steady rain that will do the garden good, and I won't need to water.

So far, today I've taken Freddie out, weeded / deadheaded, cut down my lonicera nitidia, which was starting to take over again (it earns it's place as it does well in a difficult spot of the garden, but it does tend to have world domination in mind! ). And I managed to sweep everything up once I'd taken the armful of prunings down to the garden bin, which gets emptied tomorrow .

I'm happy with my outdoor achievements today, but now I need to run my attention to indoors.

Morning kittykat and frenchie. I won't use the word master yet. That machine is something else. I drove it around all over first to get a feel for it and then I did mow. Actually didn't completely need it yet and i certainly didn't get very tight at the edges. Forgot to pick up the sprinkler so I went around it. Jerky and took a bit to get it to go straight.

I should get in the shower. And get going taking my supplements again. I think that has to do with how I'm feeling. My body is just on edge. Doesn't take much to trigger almost anxiety forbno reason at all.

Then do some basics. Maybe move a few things and vacuum. My empty computer corner is a mess. I'm actually scheduled late shift today and dh is off this week. See what comes of the week. Then Friday we head up to dd and dsil place.

Glad you got to work outdoors, Kitty!
I hope it's turning out to be a good day at payroll, FFB. Where have you decided to vacation?
Nice to see you yesterday, CL!
Gma, Hormel makes these ready-made pureed meals that my mom will eat when she doesn't want to eat the nursing home meals. I make sure she's always got a few in her room as a back up. I think it's genius!
Lauralind, WTG with the mower! I hope the supplements help the anxiety.

We got home safely yesterday. It was a boring travel day, which is the exact sort one wants. It was wonderful to sleep in our own bed last night! Dh said he slept 10 hours.

Travel Musings: There were relational complications, especially at the end of our trip - but all ended well. We love each other and are committed to each other. The last example was the county fair outing on Saturday. In figuring out the county fair outing, Dd29 and dh wanted to leave the fair after 2 hours; F was a bit surprised and mildly offended by that idea. She was concerned about leaving early and not getting our money's worth. However, I think it's silly to spend money and and then be beholden to the experience even if it makes you miserable. . . We were all feeling tired, looking at a full day of travel the next day, and didn't feel like spending 4.5 hours out on Saturday - though dh and dd27 ended up doing just that. I suggested we pay for our own tickets so that F wouldn't need to worry about our getting our money's worth or not. We did that, but she was still surprised when dd29 and I left "early". The fair was actually very fun and interesting! But after 2.25 hours, Dd29 was done and about to have a melt down; she was also upset by the fact that our family didn't keep our agreed upon limit of 2 hours (though I did - for her).

In general, F functions very differently from our family; I don't think the family she grew up in functioned as a tight group the way our family did and still does. Knowing how to participate in a group requires the ability to compromise. Also, we're culturally quite different - not ethnically but culturally. But she's very sweet and everyone is trying (for the most part) to understand and love each other. I think F and dd29 may not end up as best friends. . .

Navigating F, ds+F's idiosyncracies, and gluten-free meals made the vacation more complicated. Dh and I rehashed everything over dinner last night; he thinks that perhaps we shouldn't travel all together in the future. Not sure. thank God for dd27 who gets along well with everyone. Ds does too, but he's unaware of some social nuances.

Upon landing yesterday, got a text from my bro asking if there was a good weekend in August that he could come visit. Oh goodness! After the relational difficulties of the trip, I didn't need to think about another hard-to-get-along-with person. :? But, the reality is we are quite scheduled; we have just one open weekend in August, and dh didn't want to give it up - so I said no. We need some down time. I guess Labor Day weekend is sort of open, but dh doesn't want to host people that weekend as it's the last weekend before his class starts.

On to today: I'm going to visit my mom and go for a jog first. Groceries, laundry, and payroll - exam prep - are on the docket for this afternoon. It is sunny with a forecast high of 80*F, beautiful!

Thanks for the recipe/article Saturday, Kittykatt.

From childhood I always liked the Milky Way bar but never so much as the 3 Musketeers Bar, which simply dispenses with the nougat and caramel and puts all its efforts into fluffy chocolate, the most important part.

Enjoyed the info on our Galaxy. Of the three scientists, only Hubble was known to me, and I didn't realize there had been debate about it at what seems like a "late" date to me. So, for only a hundred years has the average person even had access to the definite knowledge of multiple galaxies, and most probably didn't know until much later. When my grandmother named a son after her old astronomy professor in 1912, she might have assumed there was only one certain galaxy.
