Turkeys are large birds that can feed many people, making them well-suited for large gatherings. As Christmas became a time for families to get together a large bird like a turkey made sense for the main dish. Meaning it was more economical to prepare one large bird rather than several small ones.

Another reason why turkey has remained the bird of choice for Christmas day is for the leftovers that can be enjoyed on Boxing Day. As a big bird, families would find themselves with leftovers which they could use to make sandwiches, stews, curries and pies becoming a staple ingredient in some of these favourites. In particular turkey curry has become a popular way to use up leftovers.

Turkeys are native to North America and were introduced to Europe in the early 16th century by Spanish explorers. By the 17th century, turkeys were becoming more popular as a festive meal in England. Before this, people often ate other birds like goose, peacock or swan. Turkeys were seen as a more practical choice as they were large enough to feed a family but didn't have other uses like cows for milk or chickens for eggs. But how did they become the number one choice on Christmas day?

King Henry VIII of England is believed to be one of the first English monarchs to eat turkey as part of a Christmas meal, establishing the bird as a festive must-have. That being said it wasn't until the Victorian era in the 19th century that turkey became the centrepiece of any Christmas dinner. It was Queen Victoria who was given credit for this cultural shift, as she started to enjoy turkey at every royal Christmas feast.

Although the royals played a role in making turkey a festive favourite they can not be given all the credit, it's popularity was given a boost from Charles Dickens' 1843 "A Christmas Carol". In the story, Ebeneezer Scrooge sends a large turkey to the Cratchit family for their Christmas dinner, cementing the idea of turkey as the ideal Christmas feast.

Good morning Trissie and thank you for starting us off. Turkey "with all the trimmings" is definitely a traditional Christmas meal, although more people nowadays over here are opti g for a turkey crown or even a rolled breast, as it's smaller, easier to carve and there are still tasty leftovers but you're not eating turkey for what seems like weeks!

If anyone is interested in watching the "Christmas Carol", I strongly recommend the version with Patrick Stewart, which is very well done,.very entertaining and also close to the original book. IMHO, it's even better than the Alistair Simpson version.

Today DH is WFH, I need to tackle downstairs and I would also like a walk and some garden time if we get the sun we're promised. I'm hoping DNeighbour S will.come.and finish painting our side of his fence today, although he might decide to leave it until Friday, which is also supposed to be dry and sunny. Realistically, I dont think I'm going to get wrapping done with DH underfoot , maybe I can do some other outstanding jobs like the Girls' nails clipping instead? We'll see! :D

Morning all. Well kittykat and trissie. Quiet morning today seeing I am the latest time zone.

Turkey. Had some at the banquet the other night. So good. I actually have 2 in my freezer now. Was contemplating if I need 2 for the family including the inlaws dsil is the oldest of his family of 6 siblings. I feel like they can all eat a lot. But maybe the big one and the ham?

I should get up and do something. Maybe soak first. I'm late shift today. Ds still missed school yesterday that bug is drawing itself out for him. So we'll see hoping he's ok today.

I did the second kind of cookies yesterday and stuffed the dw. Discovered after work I missed the start button. So it was running in the evening and now I didn't clean up supper. Didn't start laundry. Ugh.

Maybe I got mild symptoms too? Brain fog? Of course that is almost a regular occurrence but yesterday was extreme.

I need to make a soak.. do routines.. clean up supper then melt my chocolate and dip the cookies.

Has to be done tomorrow is church cookie party... Friday is work one. Need to pack what I need before they eat too many. Of course ds hasn't had appetite so that helps...

Soak in tub instead of shower
S&s both baths and reboot laundry
Tidy laundry room and master bedroom some

Empty and reload dw
Finish tidying kitchen all the way
Decorate cookies
Dh do school run if it happens 🤔
Clean cat boxes and take garbage out from everywhere
Sweep everywhere
Late shift

Turkeys! A part of our daily life here as there are several flocks of wild turkeys that wander around our neighborhood. There was a small flock in our yard yesterday; cars sometimes have to honk at them because they don't seem to understand cars and roads - they just stand in the middle of the road. I don't think I would roast one of them, though. LOL! Their meat is probably pretty tough.

Are you getting sun, Kitty?
I hope payroll is going well, trissie.
WTG getting the cookies made, lauralind. Sending get well wishes to DS.

I think I'm going to skip the school tour of a possible new location this morning. It was an "if you want to" activity for teachers; the leadership team is definitely going to go. I've had more tacked on to this day since I initially said "yes" (the EMG appointment this afternoon) and this week has become fuller with friend CG in the hospital. I'm struggling to find the time to get things done for Christmas. Our houseguest will be here in 2 days. I still need to go buy more wrapping paper and gift tags -- that's how far behind I am.

Yesterday was basically preps for class, teaching my class, and then going to the hospital to visit CG -- who is now awake, breathing fine on her own, and eating. They're still going to operate to take out the tumor, but it is no longer the immediate life-threatening emergency it was initially. Amazing.

Today: I'm going to J's home for the KS2J get together around 11. Then, I have my EMG appointment at 3; I need to be there by 2:45. I'd like to get in a work out as that didn't happen yesterday. And I'd like to get my niece's gifts in the mail today. -Oh, and I need to call the tire place about my tire. THAT will be next.

Main Goals for Today:
1. 11-12ish KS2J get together
2. Finish dniece's gift - order zoo certificate, wrap
3. Get dniece's gift in the mail
4. Exercise - maybe a long walk since it's so much warmer today
5. EMG appointment, out 2:25 - 5?
6. payroll: make game for class
7. Order gifts for Dh, J12yo, and maybe dd30
8. Get appointment set up for tire
9. Communicate with dh re: dd30's big gift

Next:
- call tire place
- some qt -- SO busy but I need it most on these days
- s2s and self care

TaDas!
- up; weighed self - ugh
- coffee
- email deletions; weather website: 20F right now! It feels like a heat wave! And the sun is working to shine through some clouds
- lot of communication re: BG and CG; the elders at the past church have somehow found out that CG is in the hospital. Contact with them would not be helpful and is not welcome. Others have been looped in to help, including presbytery leaders and BG's brother, who is here now with them.
- payroll: last read through of reading exams
- payroll: sent one more invite for exit test
- payroll: let director know I'm going to skip the tour -- which is starting now *sheesh*; also checked in on AC who was not feeling well

☀️Good morning!

Helia, that sounds like good news regarding your dfriend. Prayers surgery goes well and she can begin healing.

Laura, hope everyone feels better.

Kittykatt, I have enjoyed the many versions of The Christmas Carol, from the original to Mickey Mouse, over the years. I’m not sure if our veterinarians will write prescriptions for pets. Mine did once but she was new and that was a long time ago. She hasn’t offered and thankfully I haven’t needed one. I need to store that information for when Beau gets in need of aid getting up, etc. So far he’s fine but he will be 9 in March and german shepherds typically have hip problems unfortunately. He’s a flat back, not hunched down, so I’m hoping he won’t be as bad as Rex was, Rex was a mixed breed taking mostly after his gs ancestors and did lose his back/hip strength and needed help. It’s not fun lifting them in and out of the house. Beau is 120 lbs, a lot larger than Rex, who was around 80, so I’m not looking forward to any of that.

Trissie, hope everything is falling into place for you.

My only turkey trivia is that Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be the country bird for all of its noble qualities.
I haven’t seen any wild turkeys since that female was coming around, when was that, maybe spring? It’s been awhile. We did see a family of deer in the driveway the other night. Even deer are staying hidden now as it’s hunting season.

Idk where I disappeared to yesterday. I posted once and thought I was done for the day, I suppose. Let’s see if I can do better today.

First up is find some breakfast and read a little from the advent book I got. Bbl with a list and good intentions.

I’ve been meaning to update on dh but keep forgetting… his mom had Alzheimer’s and his dad had Parkinson’s so dh was tested for both as he does seem forgetful and his hands shake. Turns out he has neither! No Alzheimer’s so he has no excuse for not listening to me. :P No Parkinson’s, his shaking is some kind of tremor (I forgot what he called it) that can become more extreme probably because of the diabetes needing to be brought under control. Thank you for your prayers. :) I need to update j&c as well.

trissie, What an interesting history of the turkey! Thank you for starting the day, and for the historical information!

I set up wrapping center at mother's house. Keeps some mess there instead of my house. I'm back home and ready for bed. Have to return there in the morning for inspection - city issues permits for rental property, and the apartment in mother's house is due for its biennial inspection and permit. Just one more thing before Christmas! Then the next day her furnace is tuned up, and a new faucet in the apartment bathroom.

I have 2 boxes of gifts almost ready for the post office. One is taped, the other needs taping. Both need address labels attached. And trip to the post office. Then one more box, that will have 3 gifts, which all need to be wrapped, needs to be done. Then I will be through with mailing, but will have to start with all the local things:
My son and his family
friends
tenant
dfBS (the 83 yr old I help)
4 people at the nursing home where mother was
bake:
cookies
cardamon braids
Limpa (my great grandmother's Swedish rye bread)
finish decorating my tree and get out my Nativity set.

well,I see that this has been sitting here all night, not submitted!
Now I'm up and heading to mother's then the post office!
