Re: Snowdrop Saturday
Galanthus (from Ancient Greek γάλα, (gála, "milk") + ἄνθος (ánthos, "flower")), or snowdrop, is a small genus of approximately 20 species of bulbous perennial herbaceous plants in the family Amaryllidaceae. The plants have two linear leaves and a single small white drooping bell-shaped flower with six petal-like (petaloid) tepals in two circles (whorls). The smaller inner petals have green markings.
Snowdrops have been known since the earliest times under various names, but were named Galanthus in 1753.
Most species flower in winter, before the vernal equinox (20 or 21 March in the Northern Hemisphere), but some flower in early spring and late autumn.
Sometimes snowdrops are confused with the two related genera within the tribe Galantheae, snowflakes Leucojum and Acis.

Re: Snowdrop Saturday
Good morning everyone and happy Saturday!
Bama, it's very unlikely DH will actually notice anything I've done, even if I show him!
The only thing I take great care with putting back in the same place are his model buses, which live in display cabinets. Despite the plexiglass front, they still somehow get dusty. So, I photograph each cabinet before I clean the contents, so I know (near enough) where each bus needs to go. This way, I'm happy because they're clean, and DH doesn't notice!
Gma, it must be so rewarding to have clear spaces appearing as a result of your hard work -WTG!
Dogged, I'm glad to hear a good phone visit with your DBro. It's possible to keep poinsettias from year to year and encourage them to "flower" again by putting them in a dark cupboard for so many hours every evening, which sounds like a lot of work! As poinsettias are poisonous to cats and I have two "chewers", I don't buy any, so I'm saved all the work!
Plans for today - more work on the spare room. If I can just get all the "big jobs" (those where once you've started you really need to finish!) done, then I'll be happy, as the rest can be done a little at a time, as and when I can get into the spare room (DH is back to work next week, and will be WFH most days). I also need to give the sitting room a good diet and hoover so it doesn't look too neglected. And a walk would be good if it warms up and we get some sun (one forecast says snow, and we're currently under an ice warning, so I'll leave any outdoor adventures until after this has all cleared). It's also time to bag up everything to be donated, and throw out the real rubbish.

Re: Snowdrop Saturday
◕‿◕ * * * Good Morning! * * * ◕‿◕
Thanks for the start kittykatt ! I wasn't here for the Forsythia but I'm here for the Snowdrops ! I hope that you can be as productive as you need to be and that you can enjoy some time walking in the sun too.
I want to cuop to see how everyone has been doing. But both kids home and MrNG left for the day to work in a café, so not much free time. MrNG was stuck with them 3 days this week while needing to work on his internship report (1st draft due mid January) so that's the best way for him to make real progress. He will pick up the weekly grocery shopping on his way back before family movie night.
School starts again on Monday. Kids need clean clothes - and I know I will have to shop for kid clothes during Winter sales, which start on Wednesday ! I'm not ready for it but I will have to be.
TADAs
up rather early, news, email deletion
bfast with MrNG
online grocery order, for him to pick up around 6pm
MrNG off the door
TODOs / brain dump
clean pellet stove
start it
eat a bit more
New year cards for family
try and get kids out of bed before 9.30 - or Monday morning will be very hard!
unclog upstairs toilet - probably needs some chemical (hydroxide)
handwash beige woollen sweater
lol in
fill bird feeder
leftover braisé cabbage for lunch
get the three of us outside ! table tennis ?
some cleaning and organizing
recycle glass bottles and jars ?
make spinach and tuna pie for tonight
pick a movie. I want to watch Mulan, we've never seen it
... and hopefully a lot more things

Re: Snowdrop Saturday
Good morning, FFB! I hope the DBoys are compliant today for you. Table tennis outside sounds an excellent way to burn off energy if the weather cooperates!
I've had a nice long phone call with DH, with Matilda meowing down the phone to get attention!!
Today is looking bright (no snow, thank goodness - we had some form of precipitation overnight so I'll wait to go outside until temperatures rise and and ice should have melted. Jude has settled herself on the bed for her morning nap. I need to get up as Freddie needs his "proper" breakfast with his meds. I also need my breakfast before I get started on today's projects.

Re: Snowdrop Saturday
kittykatt glad there is no snow.
We had a snow forecast too for today, earlier in the week, but now they've decided it willbe mostly freezing cold, no snow.
DS7 is out of bed, running around, singing to himself, creating some kind of floating device out of old corks. DS10 is still in bed, but I don't think he's asleep. It's almost 10.30.
TADAs
clean pellet stove
start it
New year cards for family : basis is done - I will ask for MrNG's input before ordering
handwash beige woollen sweater : wrists are soaking
try and get kids out of bed before 9.30 : 50% success
TODOs / brain dump
eat a bit more
unclog upstairs toilet - probably needs some chemical (hydroxide)
handwash beige woollen sweater - ctd
lol in
fill bird feeder
leftover braisé cabbage for lunch
get the three of us outside ! table tennis ?

Re: Snowdrop Saturday
Stopping by to cheer you all up from the cottage!
Frenchie, you are very considerate for letting DH work from outside of home on Christmas break - I know you could use some time for yourself too!
kittykatt, have your DH's retirement plans progressed? I know at one point he was supposed to retire by end of the year?
We're completely snowed-in at the cottage! Well not gma-level snowed in, but there's good 4-6 inches of snow and everything looks just lovely. We already did one cross-country skiing trip (of whopping 1.5km - I walked the trail yesterday in about 20 minutes), and we plan another for today. Tomorrow, we pack, clean and head back home and the race starts again. I am ready for some changes in this new year - I actually dreamt about arguing with DH about how much I do every day and how I need others to pitch in too - so we shall see how that goes. No acting on goals or anything till Monday, though

Re: Snowdrop Saturday
Good morning, Trissie - it sounds as though you're having a great time at the cottage!
DH's retirement plans are progressing slowly. We are now at the stage where his bid for early retirement / voluntary redundancy has been received, and he's had a formal acknowledgement. The cut off date was extended as not enough people had applied, but numbers are still much lower than the powers that be had hoped for (which I think may be good for DH's chances). The next date on the calendar is "mid February" (subject to change, of course) when he will hear if his bid has been successful and he will be given all the figures for his pension and redundancy package. (If he's not successful this round then there is a round 2 and round 3, so he will apply again. But, the cynical side of me thinks if they can't get sufficient people to apply for round 1, then it's more likely they'll give everyone in round 1 what they want, to cut costs long term, and then try and persuade more people to sign up.)
So, we're a bit in limbo ATM. But I'm trying to use this time over winter to finish decluttering and deep cleaning the house (and go over those areas I've previously decluttered to see if there's any more "stuff" that can go, ), so hopefully we'll start DH's retirement with a tranquil house where everything has a place, so there's no excuse for him to not put things away. Well, a girl can dream, right?
DH is away this weekend, so I'm tackling some big jobs in the spare room/ office. He almost certainly won't notice, though.
BTW, I think it's an excellent idea to get everyone else to pitch in and do their bit in the new year. The DKids are all getting older, and you do work very hard at a demanding job, so it's time you had some help at home!
