Part of the U.S. has a winter storm bearing down this weekend - and we need to pay attention to preparation for potential ice and power outages. Batteries, battery radio, extra groceries, what else?

If you're not in the path of this particular storm, you have prepared for other weather events: any advice?

And have a great day! Glad to see you with us!

Good morning!

Mystery - Celebrating with you and sending a virtual blue ribbon for your success yesterday!

My morning has included chatting with family about where their dirty clothes are. I started the washer for today's load and their was only my clothes and kitchen clothes. Huh? DH didn't change his underwear. DD14 left her dirty clothes on the bathroom floor. DS17 left his dirty clothes on his bedroom floor. Wondering how did I become the dirty clothes monitor?

LucyLee - maybe consider a portable generator to keep your house warm enough for the pipes not to freeze and bust. The generator sits outside so no danger of exhaust problems. I agree gathering the family into one home or get hotel rooms would make dealing with the ice/snow/cold/no electricity easier. It could be a memory making experience.

Today has 3 appointments.
8:30 - DS17 ultrasound in the city
11;30 - DH cavity filled at dentist in the city
2:00 - overhead door people coming to fix garage door
and of course, the standard ones -
7:35 - DD14 to school
3:30 - DD14 from school

Two hours of my day will be travel. I don't like making 2 trips to the city, but it is the best option.

DD14 will be competing in academic meet today. I wish I could go watch it.

Preparing here has meant gathering gallon jugs that all look the same and filling with water to flush a toilet just in case of power outage. I am oddly pleased that there is a place for them that makes sense, on the floor of the half-bath. (Our half-bath is off the mud room.) Since they are clear and identical, it doesn't look too strange, lol. Yet they are convenient.

Also, we have a heat lamp for our well house and ds checked it yesterday. We keep a bit of a drip going in the master bath sink when temps get low.

My indoor plant cart is on wheels, so I can easily move plants away from their window on very cold nights, but back again for sunshine. In its former life it was a tv cart.

LadyM, I wonder if any teacher or parent has any plans to video the event? That helped me once.

We have a grocery order arriving this morning. Actually, we already had a delivery, and I thought they were early, but it was some small package for HRH.

I see cathy - hello cathy!

--------------
I laid awake since 3am - I did try to sleep - lots of thoughts - I am sure it will get better!

my cabbage rolls, rice/potatoes, green beans turned out really well! mom ate it. Her brain was very good yesterday. She is coughing a lot again.

dinner: chicken cilantro, pico, mexican salad, left over rice - mom doesn't like Mexican but we have a hankering for it. I always have food for her. (including her Alsatian stinky (STINKY) cheese). it took all day to get that smell out of the kitchen - she had stinky cheese with onions - happy mom... everyone else kept saying how it stunk so much - mom smiled!

Hi!

Dh went to bed after me and he was up before me!! He was fussing about getting to Walmart. I fibbed and told him money was low this month because I still need to pay appliance guy. (I have to phone him today to see when he's coming.) That minor fib got dh off the "when are we going to Walmart" train of thought. Why should we go all the way to the city to get soda when I can get it at numerous stores in our tiny town. I think it's the only thing we need as far as groceries.

Preparing for a storm... I just make sure we have soda for both of us, bread in the freezer, eggs and milk in the fridge, Harriet as far as flushing, you could do what dh and I have learned since we moved in here... might be TMI, but urine doesn't need to be flushed every single time you go. (whether you have a septic system or not) We have a garbage can beside the toilet for used toilet paper that has a lid and gets emptied every second day. Septic company told me a long time ago that using/flushing too much toilet paper wasn't good with a septic system. Part of our problem that time was "too much TP in the pipe" which caused a blockage. It cost close to $1000 to get it fixed. We don't have a generator although a neighbour did have one.

Quick hello…

In prepping for a storm …
* fill your car with gas
* make sure you have plenty of cash

ATM. Gas pumps and store registers won’t work if there is no electricity

Make sure you have plenty of water…fill your tub. Pipes freeze and city water pumps can go down with these kinds of storms.

Good morning!

I don't know that I have too many tips for the cold weather that apply to everyone else. Those of you with pipes above ground are more used to running a trickle of water to keep pipes from freezing. If necessary, you can hunker down in one area of your house (keep all the people and thus, all the body heat, in one place), closing interior doors and hanging blankets, if possible, over doorways with no doors. Make sure your phones are charged, and if you have battery packs, charge them up, too -- unless you are lucky enough to have copper wiring and a corded phone, you will not have landline phone service when the power goes out. Gas up your vehicles. When stocking up on food, you'll want to emphasize non-perishables, though a winter power outage means you're more likely to have somewhere you can keep your perishables at a good temperature. Dress in layers, even indoors.

We have a brief respite from the cold today -- the high is supposed to get over freezing! But at some point tomorrow the cold will return, and the highs will be in the teens for a week, anyhow.

I need to prod DC -- we need to be leaving for class in 10 minutes! Have a great day! Keep as warm as you can!

Cathy, it's a lot like my dh going to Costco - 16 miles away although supposedly less than 25 min - and getting things closer to home. I commented that we were out of the shredded chicken that I took off a rotisserie chicken a little more than a week ago, and he wanted to go to Costco that morning for a rotisserie chicken, even tho we had leftover chicken breasts from grilling. I think it's just "something to do" for my dh.

Today we have ddog's vet appointment at 3:30. Dh is going to be shocked at how she goes from a mild-mannered sweet dog to a scared-to-death little banshee. I'm insisting that dh go with me because I've always taken her by myself. And I have a 7 p.m. webinar for which I haven't done the advance reading. (It's a book club, although it's about Virginia research and this is only the intro chapter plus one more.)

Other things I should do today:
-print two or three HOA checks/mail, etc.
-get HOA deposit ready
-run Roomba in upstairs bedroom
-get floor of my workroom ready to run Roomba up there
-talk to dh about hotel room in Ft Wayne when I go for NGS conf - better to pay or use points?
-call and make hotel reservation in Richmond VA in two months
-Do reading for webinar tonight

I don't know if I can get to all that, I'm slow starting this a.m. obviously.

Looking online, our forecast may have changed enough that we're looking a more rain than snow/ice.

Home after delivering D14 to school, DS17 to ultrasound followed by breakfast since he has been fasting.

We came home for an hour. As soon as we pulled into the driveway, Jesse (friend using shop) immediately came to visit with us.
