Thankful Thursday

Post by Kathryn-in-Canada »

Good morning, SHEville!

There is nothing like a vacation to make you take note of things for which you are thankful but we shouldn't wait to give thanks.

Even in the most distressing of times, there are glimmers of good, signs that our lives are not black and white, nor set in stone as either good or bad; each moment has elements of both.

If we can manage to notice the good in each moment, the positive energy will help carry us through the bad of that same moment.

There was an interesting description of how one of dd's friend's brain works in the discussion of Robin William's death. Like mine, his brain runs at a thousand miles and hour jumping from thought to thought. Here's what he wrote
Humour is difficult to define, but one common definition of humour is "surprise". A related (but narrower) definition I like is "humour is making a new connection the audience didn't see before." Unexpectedly but effectively lead an audience from idea X to idea Y, and they'll laugh.

Robin Williams was genius at that. He could see all the connections, all the time. In a four-minute span, he could make jokes about Banks, which he links to to Sarah Palin, which leads to Oprah, which leads to The Olympics, which leads to British Columbia, which leads to Marijuana, which leads to California State Parks. One idea, leading to another idea, leading to another idea. Draw all those connections and it's a laughfest for everyone...right?

Not always. "One idea leading to another idea" also effectively describes how triggers work. Connections aren't necessarily good, sometimes they're very bad. For example, if someone tells you they're going to see Sting at The Aud, and the mention of Sting might remind you of your ex-girlfriend – your dead ex-girlfriend – you'd be suitably bummed out.

Except if your brain is the type to see connections everywhere, it doesn't have the sense to stop there! Your brain's all like, "P used to listen to Sting when I visited her room. She died February 4, 2005. That night I was supposed to see XYXY, the show where W and S got together, and their age difference is 8 years – same as my parents who are split up now. They had gotten married on February 29, 2004. P was the only other witness. February 29, 1984 was also M's birthday. She's dead now too. That happened April 17, 2013. I found out, then walked to the Cheese Club EOT..."

But a comedian won't tell you those chains, the depressing and personal and inaccessible ones. A comedian will only tell you the funny ones.
While my brain does similar mental memory gymnastics, the difference is at each of those steps, there is something to be thankful for and I'll see the thankful moments as well as the sad ones.

I'm thankful to have Whitepoint to return to each year. I look out on the beach and see my grandmother sitting there painting but that turns my minds to her paintings on my walls and how they bring Whitepoint to me even when I'm at home, rather than drag me down the negative thought path that she had dementia, as did her aunt (her mom died at 36 so we don't know about her), her siblings, her children (inc. my mother) and likely I will as well unless those long-living genes from my father's side take over, except then I get to live until all my friends are dead and most of the my children and their friends are dead and I'm all alone.

See, we can go from delightful to depressing thoughts easily, but, to a certain degree we can steer ourselves to the delightful if we search for the things for which to be thankful that present themselves in each moment.

So that is my wish for each of you. I see many thankful, positive, posts here and I'm thankful to learn (or be reminded) how to live through adversity with grace, compassion and strength by reading your stories each day.

How fun that you have a Donkey, LadyMaverick!

Thank you for the opening, Kathryn. I resolve to be mindful of what my mind is saying to me today. I don't think I'm automatically going to negative thoughts, it's just that there are a lot of real-life hard things going on right now. Our situation is real and I don't think I need to make odd connections for everything to seem bleak. But I will be mindful and see what I'm saying to myself.

Once years ago I was told by someone to watch my self-talk. I became mindful of how I was putting myself down all the time in my inner most thoughts. I made a conscious effort to stop that (and I think I have) and it made a huge difference in my life.

Anyway.... yesterday I tried to get here and kept getting interrupted and gave up. I remember thinking how I didn't have time for this "fun" computer stuff any more. So this morning I'm here before the day gets crazy. DH woke me to ask me to send off some pictures to a customer he wasn't able to do. I think he had his camera setting wrong or something because I couldn't attach very many at once and they got sent slowly. 17 pictures and they were probably all huge. Oh well, they are done now.

I am having coffee, planning my day. I need to pay bills first. I'd like to get out to the store. I have the sniffles and they kept me up last night so I didn't sleep well. DSisILaw is unhappy with us, our plumber hasn't been out to her jobsite (we're building her a house) and she was upset with me on the phone yesterday. Boy can she push my buttons. I'm trying to forget that and move on...

Good morning all! Wonderful topic! I have so much I'm thankful for. Right now, I'm thankful for safe travels so far and am hoping for another day of them.

I think what reminded me of you while driving, LadyM, was a sign for cowboy church!! I need to keep SHEs in mind when I travel by car, especially by myself since dh would have little patience for extra stops.

I am up and s2sed. Ds just got up so we're doing better! I called dh to make sure he knew about dd16's school registration happening this morning. He said he did. When I called, he was using my Mr. Clean? sponges/bars to wash the walls and was VERY excited about how well they work. Never know what that man will be doing - but he will be doing something. At least he is not working (payroll) at the moment, so that is good for him, imho. We bought Maia a new toy that is basically a ring made out of car tire rubber. She loves it - but when we throw it in the house, it leaves black marks on the walls. I'm thankful that dh is so industrious.

OK, we're off to breakfast.

Safe travels Helia, I think you're still on the road?

((Harmony))

Thank you Kathryn for the self talk mini-lesson. I know I have a good life but too many times I let the little negative things drive me.

I need to get in the shower and get out of here - usual run to JCC and to dmom's then need to be back at home in time to take Moses to the vet at 2. Yesterday I found dried up dog throw up upstairs - since Moe is the only one who can get up there that means he is the one who has been throwing up. He has a vet trip scheduled already for his six months "senior" ck up but at least I know now who has been ill.

Waving to LM and her brood!

Helia: I'm thankful for a dh who, whenever we are going anywhere, asks if there are any SHEs nearby.

Hot water will be turned off here at 11 for 3 hours.

1. I'm thankful I ran the dishwasher the moment I got up (we didn't run it last night because it take 100 minutes and we wanted to listen to the ocean not the dishwasher as we went to sleep!)

2. I'm thankful they called to warn us with 90 minutes to spare.

3. I'm thankful I got confused and thought it was 10, so only had 30 minutes to s2s. Now it feels like I'm ahead today because I'm already s2s!

Harmony Is 'stinkin thinkin' a P&P expression? I think that's what I'm asking us to look beyond today or to avoid.

We are allowed to face reality. In fact, if our reality can be changed, it has to be faced. But we aren't supposed to let only the negative viewpoint prevail without also seeing those positives in our lives. Look for the little good things. Even if it is only that you have this wonderful village to come to and vent when you feel like nothing is going your way.

You and I are both recovering from medically caused fatigue and are now dealing with the weight that those medical issues blessed us with. I'm still having trouble correcting all the bad habits and including all the new restrictions into a healthy diet. It is easy to know what has to be done, it is much harder to live that on a daily basis. I do find tracking both the good and bad is helping me see the good in my lifestyle. This month my only goal is to track each day (as bad as they might be.) As much as this extra weight weighs me down (physically walking hurts, I don't bend like I should, I hate myself in the mirror and I feel bad about myself), I am thankful that I have not been treated by a doctor for a whole year now and I see signs of getting better. For example this morning I successfully and confidently, stepped out of the very high sided tub without thinking about it, even though earlier when I looked at the tub I thought, "that's going to be trouble for me."

Good morning everyone! I am very thankful for this village and the love and support that exudes from herein.
A dirty but tidy room will look much cleaner than a messy but clean room.

Tidying gets me bigger 'bang for my buck' than cleaning and I feel better about my surroundings.
Took me too long to learn this as well, Kathryn. But it's oh so true! I only finally realized less than a year ago that if I had (or dh or at dd's) things in less than a pile -when they were piled neatly -oh what a difference it made! I may still have the same amount of 'stuff' in a space, but when it's 'tidy' what a difference!
I'm thankful for a dh who, whenever we are going anywhere, asks if there are any SHEs nearby.
Me too, Kathryn. Dh is always interested in our village residents and daily asks if anything's new, etc.

Salesman called just after 9. We're meeting him at one to transfer ownership of vehicles. Insurance Co. called a while ago to make sure we were actually getting a new car today so they could get things ready to mail to us (new insurance cards and I'm sure a new bill!). We're keeping our old plates, simply because I HATE NY's pumpkin colored plates. Our present ones are white and probably a good 10/12 years old. But they're still good and the dealer said we could simply keep them if that's what we wanted. So I don't have to learn a new number. :D The pumpkin color is especially bad against a crimson colored car (IMHO). Our new car is "velvet red" so it has the 'sparkles' in it. This is the text I've drafted for our dks. Tell me, does it SOUND like we're getting a puppy/dog?
"Just wanted to tell you all that we have a new addition to our family -after all these years. Hope you like her. Her name is Mandy. I must be nuts! Hope it's ok if we bring her to FL, J. Can't believe I agreed to this."
They all know how much dh wanted a dog for years (but not so much now that we travel back and forth each year) and they also know that I most likely would be against such an agreement -if only because I'd be tripping over one all the time. I intentionally did not send a picture, but will later today. Just wanted to have a little fun while the car is new. Know how quickly that goes away. And we don't normally name a car, but just this once.

Think dgs9 has pretty much guessed, this morning, that we're getting a car so he may not be all that surprised.

Can't remember if I had said yesterday that we were back to dh and I traveling to FL together in November. Well this morning he called to say 'change in plans'. He's driving the truck after all. So told me to go ahead and book a flight for dd to come up to drive down with me. Seems dcampowner had told friend he was going down anyway as soon as the water is off and he'd drive the truck. Their main concern was that they didn't want me going alone. After dh talked with them both this morning, they agreed that was the best plan. Campowner didn't really want to drive, he preferred to fly so he'd have a couple more days down there. Imagine they're only going for 2 or 3 weeks, tops. Next up is to figure out just when dd can come up. If it's not till when dh is leaving anyway, there's little sense in that and will decide then what we'll do.
Begun is half done -SO! JUST BEGIN!!

How interesting - second time I've been reminded of self-talk today. Our minister almost never sends a "thought for the day" email, only announcements, but did this morning, a quote from author Paul Tripp. The bolding was done by our minister.
I may not know who you are or what your life has been like, but I can almost guarantee that trouble has paid a visit, is currently visiting, or will visit your life in some capacity.

When trouble comes, it’s vital that you talk to yourself. I teach this principle all the time – no one is more influential in your life than you are because no one talks to you as much as you do. What you say to you in moments of trouble will impact the way you respond.

Shameless brag of the day:
HRH called me over to look at FB this a.m.
Ds29 had posted a photo of his truck, with the caption, "all paid off... working toward a debt free life."
"liking" that almost didn't seem like enough!

helia, your post reminds me that as I passed "that man" of yours' alma mater when our new grandchild was born, I thought of you and family. He was born at the time Maya Anjelou's memorial service was being held at Wake Forest and there was a lot of hustle-bustle in both communities.

Smiling at Dee's ddJ's probable reaction to the announcement.

Just finished with a 1.4 GB download. It took a long time as the computer kept going to sleep and then the download would stop.

Now to go get groceries for the week. I was going to meet DH in town (he goes to breakfast with the boys on Thurs.) but wanted to finish the download and install first.

Cloudy again today and might rain so I want to get to town and back before that. The most direct route crosses a wash and if it rains we will have to go around.
