I have to admit I have stopped watching most local news programs because of the sensationalism that seems to take over. I like PBS news hour and BBC news. I agree with d helia that all people are multi layered. I do feel that Tim Hunt may have felt like he was kidding but without realizing it he diminished the professionalism of his co-workers and other female scientists. I believe it's time we stop thinking of male/female and just think of professionals. (okay... I solved the worlds problems)

Washing up wednesday... I love it.
I went to the store and have put away all but a few dishes. Heading out for walk soon. Then laundry and put away as well as working on 3 season room

Exactly, Twins. My body is surely telling me take it easy. Have more spots that are coming to the surface and are hurting to some degree. Just so very thankful, grateful I did not break my hip. I do have osteopenia (precursor to osteoporosis) so was doubly thankful. Must be that calcium is doing some good. A neighbor from a couple of streets over was just over to visit for the last hour or so. Now I'm tired and ready for another nap.

My apologies for letting my cynicism shine through earlier. I was reminded of that by my mentee who is applying for jobs in the media, in the area of music/ entertainment production.

Yes, it's good to know it wasn't worse Dee and that you are moving around some.
Sorry about ds' job, Sadie. That's very kind of you to make pie for him!!
If more people in the world were as kind and caring as you, blessed, I think many of the world's problems would be solved!

OTOH, I've been thinking about our dfriend, Mrs. Physics Prof. She would probably have a fair bit to say about being a woman in a male-dominated science field. When we first met her, it didn't take us long to realize that she had been profoundly wounded by her male colleagues and maybe more institutionalized gender issues in her field over the years. Perhaps she is particularly sensitive? Perhaps not all women in her area of physics, a very theoretical area, have had the same experiences - but hers is a viewpoint based on her personal experiences over many years in several different institutions. She is extremely smart, extremely driven, and also very beautiful.

I'm home again. I met with mentee for 2 hours and then stopped by the school (across the street) to pick up my class roster so I can make up an attendance sheet tonight.

Dfriend called while I was driving home, and we chatted a bit re: game plan for the meeting tomorrow morning.

It looks like I need to be pretty well prepped for class tonight. I have a meeting tomorrow morning (9 - 11-ish) and then a haircut in neighboring village in the early afternoon, for which I'll need to leave around 12:15. I will be back in town around 2:30. I'll probably go straight to work and be at payroll until about 5:45. This gives me 1 hour at home between 8:45 a.m. and 6:00 pm - and an hour of non-teaching time at payroll.

Next:
- record the food I've eaten today
- get the chicken chili going
- put out the island hot spot

I am actually following today's topic and "washing up" around here! First, washed a baby quilt that got very dirty at the festival Monday... then started a load of dh's clothes. Need to go hang those to dry now.

Trash compactor arrived and we've got it in place now...
Took the box to the burn pile at ds's house, along with hand truck and the T homas the T rain table we bought for dgs at Christmas -- which has still not been assembled.
Forgot to get lamps to take to my daunt tomorrow.
Post office, library, and now waiting on dh to be ready to go to Wmart.

Sorry to hear Sadie's ds was disappointed in job situation, but hoping this new position will work out okay. * Happy birthday to him! *

I am just PRAYING this all works out and ds and dh aren't disappointed b/c ddil refuses to use the names they already picked out b/c of me and my big big mouth...

Kathryn, I have been on my HIGH HORSE about the Tim Hunt thing for days. Here's my take:
So a brilliant academic admits that they (she/he) doesn't make jokes well, or know what other people may think is funny, and therefore said the wrong thing in a joke. DUH. How likely is this???? exTREMEly likely. As a matter of fact, it borders on the stereotypical. When I first read the kernel of the remarks reported, I immediately "heard" an intelligent person smiling about it, if indeed they said that. (And I believe I'm a person who's more likely to get feelings hurt over sexist remarks than most would. That kind of thing bugs me no end.) Learning later about the marriage, I wondered if the "fall in love" line was a teasing joke told many times between (or about) the couple.

Today was a very stressful driving day. I was hopelessly turned around in uptown at one point, though not lost. Just trying to hold all the one-ways, the road-closeds, and the reversals of street numbers in my mind, while starting back in an opposite direction for another "pass" toward dd, while not wrecking, and not harming suicidal pedestrians. I credit cell phones and dd's bright teaching-assistant for managing to direct a traveling car and two pedestrians to meet at the same intersection at the same moment, with dd hoping right into the car. That girl deserves a bouquet of flowers, and a recommendation for a traffic controller's job.

The internship meeting was crowded and blustery, lots of speeches and entertainment and a big meal as promised (I watched part from the lobby). Mostly I shopped at a nearby Michael's, and then parked under a shade tree to read a magazine I bought there. Ate at drive-thru.

Dd was thrilled to meet her new employer and part of his staff. She is one of two interns who got jobs at the county Geospatial Information Systems office (GIS). She says these folks are funny, sarcastic, nerdy, and "I just LOVE them!" So she seems to have been matched up with the right crowd of geeks. She'll be working on Adobe Illustrator and generally learning mapping and computer-generated land usage stuff, although they may go out to physically map at times. She enjoyed chatting with the other intern, too, and says he's very shy but pleasant.

I couldn't get her back to her walking group before they had already boarded the trolley, so she is hoping the professor is not disappointed in her. But in a way it's just as well, because she had an hour to just rest in the dorm before they all got back, and I'm sure she will appreciate the quiet.

Hello, I have dragged myself back here to see what's going on. I am once more alone in the house. DD was out on a jet ski and then fell asleep on the beach and got such a sunburn she was sick yesterday and unable to drive down and get the kids and dog. So I had an extra day with them.

I have been washing up for sure. Back bedroom where dog's bed was has been swept and mopped. Fine fur cleaned out of sweeper brushes. I think I'm on my 3rd LOL today and I did 3 yesterday. I'm beginning to wonder when I'll ever get the place back to normal around here.

I just spent at least an hour outside watering all the bare spots in the yard where there is still some grass seed remaining that our neighbor did not blow away with his mower. It is so hot and humid, 94°, certainly not like RRose, but it really got to me and I have a queasy tummy from the heat. I am trying to sip some ice water.

I could keep washing up and doing things around here non-stop for hours I'm afraid but I'm really out of energy. Sorry I'm just not able to respond to anyone...though I read...

Harriet - I am loving hearing about your DD and GIS. Will she be learning GIS software?

After spending a hour on the phone with Kindle support I exhausted all efforts in restoring LO Kindle to working order. So I ordered LO birthday gift (early). Honestly - it is also a gift to DH & myself too. I have LO set up in a kid friendly environment on the Kindle that comes in VERY handy during those times that we need him occupied (doctor visits, etc). It is easy to restrict how long LO can spend on the Kindle daily and divide that allowed time between reading, playing apps and watching shows.

I typed up elder mintues from last month and printed them out with 30 SECONDS to spare before DH left for this month elder meeting. Procrastinate. Me? Nahhhhh.....I had 30 seconds left!

Someone sent me a picture of our pastor taken at a fancy wedding last weekend and asked me to share it. He was wearing a white suit, vest and white shoes. Of course, it was my pleasure to share this picture on the church FB group. Our pastor is not known for his clothing selection. He doesn't have a problem with preaching in a tshirt and jeans - of course always wearing his dirty black cowboy hat. He is well loved so the teasing and comments are coming fast. I hope his sense of humor is firmly in place today.

Our weather forecast continues with woe & warnings - this just arrived in email - RAINFALL TOTALS IN EXCESS OF SEVEN INCHES MAY OCCUR LOCALLY.WITH A SIGNIFICANT THREAT OF LIFE THREATENING FLASH FLOODING & RIVER FLOODING.

There are no rivers between our home & karate class, so I'm off to take LO to his lesson

d helia that is how I feel about you! We, here, are so very lucky to have each other.

I spent the afternoon cooking...emptied out once load of dishes this am and then refilled and am washing another load of dishes again. dh cut the grass and is washing blankets.

I still have to do my evening dailies

I bought myself a chefs coat because even with my apron I was getting my cloths oily or dirty. It has really helped!
I look absolutely ridiculous but at least a clean ridiculous lol.

I became part of a veggie (csa- community supported agriculture - organic group this summer... I pick up my first box from a local certified organic farm this weekend).

Oh, dear, your poor dd, Harmony! I suppose she is putting some kind of after-burn product on it, or aloe - anything to soothe.

Yes, LadyM, she will be learning software but my best guess at explanation may be weak, since I'm going on limited 3rd hand knowledge here. I understand there is a platform of ESRI ArcGIS upon which this office (where dd will work) built their own program. They won an award from NACO for their program last year. Then they also use other programs with various techno-names, yet I realize I'm not sure which are for the office and which are portals for citizens. It's funny that her dad immediately guessed "GIS" when she first found out a mystery department in the county was interested in her resume but did not want to interview personally or tell her their address.

Back from the symphony's dress rehearsal of Beethoven's 9th. We only stayed for the first part. I'd buy tickets for the whole concert but it is sold out. It was wonderful to listen to the choir (at one point it brought tears to my eyes) and fun to watch the soloists so relaxed. Dh really enjoyed it (this is his favourite piece of classical music) but the gentleman beside him was squirmy and kept invading dh's space (by spreading out his knees.)

Dh decided he had heard enough and was ready to leave plus he didn't want to stay beside the guy any longer.

As we headed home, we were at the bus stop on a street corner and who should walk by to cross the street but squirmy guy, who yelled out, "Hey, you were the guy I was sitting beside just now!!!!" and then wanted to talk with dh.

As he walked away (thankfully he wasn't taking a bus!) dh said he couldn't believe the guy was still invading his space, even out on the street blocks away from the concert hall!

I had a very productive day getting a lot of cleaning done, both zone chores and weeklies. Still have the kitchen weeklies to do and bathrooms (but I didn't get to them until Friday last week so don't mind waiting until tomorrow.)
