Tuesday Tuning

Post by Kathryn-in-Canada »

If this New Year is getting away from you is there anything in your systems that needs tuning?

Or is there anything in your expectations that needs tuning?

There are only so many hours in a day.

Our systems are there to help us manage those hours efficiently. But we also have to remember we are well-rounded, inquisitive people, trying to drink in all the world has to offer. There is a limit to how much we can cram into one day, one week, one year.

And through our lives, that limit is constantly changing.

Pam & Peggy had us time how long it takes us to do chores so that we could have reasonable expectations for ourselves, both to avoid:

"I have 5 minutes before I have to leave so I'll just do this (15 minute) task first and by the way, why am I always late getting out the door?"

and also

to let us know that if we focus and just do, it doesn't take 30 minutes to unload the dishwasher and clean the sink, so we don't have to wait until we have a free 30 minutes to do that task.

Yesterday it took me just over 50 minutes to strip the bed, start the laundry, and remake the bed. That is a 10 - 15 minute task. The reason? Dgs was here and I was constantly having to stop the task, redirect him, or even leave the room to put 'eyes on' him to make sure he was playing and not mischief-ing. There's a reason my original SHE system, created when dd was 7 months old, had a card for 'wash hair' and another card for 'style hair'. Quite often there was no time in the day to do both and to consider the task undone if I never got to the styling part was setting my expectations too high and not celebrating what I could do.

So make sure you aren't expecting too much of yourself. If things aren't working for you right now, take time for a tune-up today!

It is now 2 hours later and I am still at the computer.

I did write up why the Lastpass breach is so serious and posted it to FB and sent it along with a request to put a flag on our account to our financial manager. I know he and his assistant wouldn't change passwords or anything without being sure it was us, but call-centre people don't 'know' us so won't be chatting away about concussions or ADD or anything else like that that are part of my usual conversation with the assistant! And it is easily conceivable that the unencrypted info breached combined with other data from previous breaches from other companies will give a threat actor enough info to convince a call centre employee they are me. (My name and address and the fact that I have FB are part of the Lastpass unencrypted info and by going through my FB feed you can get all kinds of stuff about me including birthday (my FB birthday is fake but friends wish me Happy Birthday on my real birthday) and my mother and grandmother's maiden names (sourced through siblings and cousins.)

One of the tune-ups I've done this week is add a 9 a.m. alarm that asks if I'm dressed. I've snoozed it 3x so far this morning but will now head off and get dressed.

Great start, Kathryn, lots to think about. This is a busy day for me with teeth cleaning and workout. I added several errands to my list today, not sure I'll get to them all. Feeling a little overwhelmed actually, but it's relative. It's nothing to what I used to try to get done, lol.

Omelet with spinach and cheese, strawberries and a little bit of yogurt this morning. I need to leave for teeth cleaning in a little over an hour. Dh walked ddog a lap this a.m. so I can take her in the yard if I need to. It's been raining.

Not dressed either, Kathryn. Right there with ya!

Good morning, Kathryn! Thanks for starting us off! I wonder where everyone else is this morning? Don’t know about anyone else, but it’s gloomy here. Maybe we all need your light box! Hello, Twins! Sounds like it’s gloomy where you are, too.

I need to get moving. I’m sitting in the comfy chair, and it’s making me want to doze off. I did get one thing done already beyond my morning routine: I swished and swiped the bathroom.

I keep track of the time on my cards — well, the amount of time things take, anyway. I wonder if I should also keep track of when I do things. I have so many gaps when I’m trying to rev up my motivation.

Next up here is to clean up breakfast and get a load of laundry started. Have a good day, everyone!

I was up way too early because the youngest cat needs meds to calm her down for vet appointments 3 hours prior to appointment, which was at 9:30 and it takes 20 minutes to get there. Next appointment is after 12 noon for this cat. I'm not getting up at 5:30 a.m. for a cat ever again.

It's foggy and raining here. Miserable day and I'm in a foul mood.

No idea what's for supper.

I'm in a slightly less immediate situation as you are and that might be why I'm focusing so much on resetting expectations and priorities.

As for not responding to everyone... if you haven't had time to even read, let alone post, that tells you something about what's really important right now. We'll be here when you have more time but if you need to focus on other things right now, never apologize. Just try and drop in now and then to give us an update. We're praying for you, your dh, and your girls so, as you cope, remember you have a village of friends, cheering you on. For all those months I was away, as I'd work, in my head I still heard the wisdom that has been shared over the years in the village.

The weekly kitchen chores are done and the floor vacuumed and mopped. It took longer than usual because there's been a lot of extremely slipshod cleaning going on around here for the past month. Plus we used the deep fryer last night so I wanted to give the counters a good scrub down.

My load of delicates is finished as well, and now waiting to hang up. I remembered to pull them out of the washer before washing the floor since the laundry room is off the kitchen. And I pulled a cold drink out of the fridge and put that at my desk so I could have a break before vacuuming and dusting the bedroom and then hanging up the laundry to dry.

My 15 minute break is almost up.

Oh, and I got dressed first and did a 250 step walk. I'm due for another one so will do that before I start the bedrooms.

~~~Waving Hello to everyone~~~
I am out of tune & off my timing today and recognizing how much smoother things go when I follow my schedule.
I was up a couple times during the night giving OTC meds and making sure DD11 fever didn't spike too high. I was alternating between Tylenol & Motrin and experience has taught me the 3am Motrin dose would take care of her for several hours. I knew DD11 was not going to school today, so I turned off the morning alarms and I slept 2 hours past my normal time. That meant everyone was up and wanted to talk to me during my bathroom time. It was a constant interruption to the point that it reminded me of when the kids were younger and I could only dream of taking a bath in peace. When I get up early I have the house to myself and start the day calmly and quietly. I missed that calm/quiet time this morning.
DS14 has appt with counselor this evening so we are using this opportunity to make a memory. I told DS14 to pick a restaurant, shopping, activity, or exploring to do. We are leaving a couple of hours early and going to a restaurant we have never tried.
