Skill Set Saturday

Post by Harriet »

There are obstacles, hazards and detours out there, but our skill sets transform them and get us where we need to go.

Others look to us for outside-the-box thinking.

MacGyver was probably based on homemakers' bright ideas, don't you think?

How has your skill set changed problems for you lately?

Still appreciating Cathy's lovely set-up in the waiting room for us.
Hoping to hear from Dee - so surprised she found time to open June's J and C. Thank you!

I couldn't think of a title for today.

As usual, I was up early. There is laundry getting done. The kitchen needs attention. Instead of paying attention to the kitchen, I went to a book sale. It was the local library putting it on. My intention before even going in was to stay away from books with a sticker on the spine. I ended up with an arm load of books, including "where the crawdads sing" which I was looking at a few days ago at the book store. The entire armload was mine for a $7 donation. They were asking for either a $7 donation if you had a bag, or a $10 donation to get a bag from them.

Supper tonight will be BBQ steak and potatoes. Mushrooms for dh. I made a bean salad yesterday and a pasta salad this morning. So there will be salads.
Dishes never stop.
Laundry never stops.
Litter boxes never stop.
Paper never stops.

Harriet I LUV today's theme!
I slept in till 6:30 today yea! Slept well too.
My skill set writing and planning is a problem for me as I sort and purge my stack of planners has gotten worse before it gets better like when you empty out a closet. This has turned in to a multiple day project. So I have planner guts in the living room on a low book case stacked up.
Covers and discs. are in the creativity room. Some Planners emptied out I will reuse are on the table. With unused pages for notes to do later for Cmas / Holiday planners ideas etc. Journaling ideas & more. These are the keepers.

I have the goals pages I wanted to keep in the one and set that aside for reference. It is really good to see the progress I've made over the last few years yea!

Got a tripod phone holder that does not have the right screw... so will need that. But it does work on the table.
I can cook / dishes in the sink.

Dealing with these items are on my goals & top few things today.
Successes List Got the cc info. on Amz. updated and my fresh pages will be here next week.

Harriet - Thank you for the start today. One of my life-long goals is to never stop learning and improving. There are always new skills to learn and sharpen the saw of existing skills.

Thank you for the suggestions and encouragement in fending off depression. I know from experience that ignoring the signs is the worst thing I can do. I want to fight it at the beginning instead of waiting. I need to up my game on self-care.

Yesterday I set up a place in the house that I used previously when I needed some quiet time. I spent an hour there, but I couldn't get settled. i suspect it is going to take some time & practice for me to be able to quiet my mind. I don't know how to be alone.

We had a strong storm during the night with impressive lightning, thunder, wind, and rain. I went to the garden at daylight to see the damage. Everything survived but a couple of the pepper plants are lying on their sides. I prop them up and expect they will recover. The tomato plants are shoulder high and loaded with green tomatoes, but they have a great wire cage system that helps them stand up against these types of storms.

DD47 is here decluttering & deep cleaning DS14 bedroom and bath. A couple of weeks ago I told both DS14 and DD12 that they had until June 1st to declutter/deep clean their bedroom. If it wasn't done, then I was going to hire a house cleaner to do it. DD12 didn't want anyone to touch her stuff and she just needed a little guidance on how to deep clean. DS14 ignored the June 1st deadline and continued to fill every moment of his days with work, vehicle projects & activities with his friends. He accepted that someone else would go through his stuff and declutter. We had several talks about his decision, which means that he can't get upset about things being missing.
Stay curious. Challenge assumptions. Success loves persistence.
When life gets difficult, learn to sing & dance in the rain.

That's interesting about the decluttering and cleaning, LadyM. One time I asked DD if she had minded that when she and her sister (they shared their room) went to summer camp every year I used that time to empty all the drawers and the closet and I went through everything and sorted clothes and got rid of stuff, deep cleaned it all and put it back together. Those years they were growing and changing and people gave us clothes that didn't fit then etc. and it all needed done. She would have gladly helped I'm sure, but back then I had no systems and did not know to teach them. She told me she was always glad to come home from camp and see it all neat, clean, and organized. She has a BO gene...sort of. So, some kids don't want to do it but don't mind others doing it, like LM's son.

Others hate others to make those decisions for them. I know someone who years and years later (50-60 yrs) or more still resents that being done with their stuff. To this day they hold tightly to everything and I think this is one reason why. So we must be careful to get permission to mess with other people's stuff. DH likes for me to sort out his clothes and doesn't mind when things disappear...just NOT his tools!

I always go back and read the last posts from the night before and today I found ELIZABETH'S very helpful post about how to set our browser's to always show the dialog to save our downloads. I immediately went there and set mine, which was NOT set and that is why I never got those prompts to save a download. I think this is going to help tremendously with the issue I was having with saving those files I know are in the email. Like an easy shortcut! I'll let you know how it works.

ELIZABETH, I use Firefox and I went and did what you suggested. Looking at the other settings on that page, (no I didn't change anything else) it asked the question: What should firefox do with other files and it gave 2 choices:
Save files or Ask whether to open or save files. I don't think the files they were referencing were downloads but other stuff which I don't have any idea about. The Save files one was a darker blue, though not checked, and the Ask whether to open or save files was just a plain blank circle. Am I right to think this is something different and I shouldn't mess with that?

I wrote down all you said on my tips page I made last night. I even wrote down for the Microsoft browser, in case I ever get to using that one. Thank you Thank you Thank you!

Harriet, I'm sorry your eye sight isn't as clear as it used to be. Mine isn't either. I have those floaters that don't help and I definitely need my glasses to read. My problems learning stem for possible damage up there from the seizures I had in my early teens and beyond. I had lots of problems in my 2nd year of college, when previously I learned easily all my life...and when I mentioned it to my Neurologist she said it was probably from that. So I can read something and not remember it easily, though I understood it at the time. I don't memorize easily either, never did. I remember making flash cards for myself to learn things.

And to me, computer stuff is not intuitive. It is to some people. The words they use for things mean something completely different in everyday life. Like the "choosing" something example I wrote yesterday. Once I understand something like that it is easy and choosing means something different than choosing my clothes for the day... it's a different action one takes with a computer. Just like "saving" something. When I save something, I find a place for it and physically take it and put it somewhere. In a computer there's a whole set of stuff to do that's completely different than picking up a recipe and saving it in the recipe box.... maybe I have a sort of block or learning disability to learning this stuff.

Skill set. Yeah, I need more of that for this stuff. I have skill sets for let's say fixing a baseboard, painting a wall, etc. but with practice and experience that gets easier. Same with the skill set with electronics. I just need practice and experience. And information. Without information I don't know how to start, because it's not intuitive to me.

Well, that is all skippable. And probably not interesting to anybody but me!

Hoping everybody's day is successful and my mind is on those who have a lot going on right now. I'm watching the weather. We had rain, we have a system out in the gulf they are calling a tropical storm so I must check where we are with all this. It's a weird storm, traveling north to south instead of the other direction which is odd for us... so I will be keeping track of it this weekend. Thankfully it's not a hurricane.

C I, I'm keeping an eye open for an update for Dee. Continuing my prayers.

The weather has been rather warm this week; temps up in the 80s and yesterday it was 93*. Today is a little cooler, back down to 85* and partly sunny/cloudy. There is some rain coming from the north, but it is west of us.

Dson-T and Ddil-A are at the airport in St. Louis. Dson will be heading home from his week's training classes and ddil is heading to Florida to visit her dfriend Jen in Ft. Myers. They are booked on a cruise in the Bahamas for next weekend. I hope the tropical disturbance will miss them.

I used all my skills yesterday when we met with dfriends in the neighborhood to play our Mahjongg games. We play from 10:30 a.m. to 2 - 2:30 p.m. I managed to win two games, came really close a couple more times. We each were lucky enough to win a few times.

I got my laundry done for the week yesterday afternoon; still have to hang a few things up, but I can do that when I go upstairs this evening. I also upgraded my laptop from Windows 10 to Win 11. That took about 1 1/2 hours. I bought this laptop the end of 2021 and it came with a free upgrade to Win 11, so this was finally the time to do it. I'll have to look through to see what is really different.

Dgrdaughter-H just left for work tonight. Ddil's dmom and I have been watching Nascar race this afternoon, but it's just about time for supper and I'm hungry! See you all later!
