Re: Willow Flute Wednesday
The Willow Flute, also known as Seljefløyte is a Long flute without finger holes used in the folk music of Sweden and Norway. .
The willow flute is played by varying the force of the air blown into the mouthpiece, with the end of the tube being covered by the finger or left open. The tones produced are based on the harmonic series. Playing the instrument with the end of the tube covered produces one fundamental and its overtones, playing it with the end of the tube left open produces another fundamental and series of overtones. Willow flutes cannot play an equal tempered scale.
Modern willow flutes are typically made of plastic (PVC tubing is often used), but the original willow flutes were made from sections of bark cut from green willow branches. Willow flutes could only be made this way during the spring, and became unplayable when the bark dried out.

Re: Willow Flute Wednesday
Good morning, everyone, and happy Wednesday! Happy St George's Day to all who celebrate. Some ecclesiastical authorities have apparently moved it to 28th April for this year only, due to the late date of Easter, so there may be two opportunities for one of my favourite Shakespeare quotes: “The game's afoot: follow your spirit, and upon this charge, cry ‘God for Harry, England, and Saint George!’” (Henry V) (If you watch the film version of this, starring Kenneth Branagh, this scene is truly magnificent!)
As well as being St. George's Day, the 23rd April is the day we, here in England, celebrate the birth of William Shakespeare. (There's also a bit of uncertainty over this date, as records weren't always kept as scrupulously as they are now!
)
Fun Shakespeare fact: Shakespeare mentioned cats more than 40 times in his works; including this one, from Henry IV:
"I am as vigilant as a cat to steal cream."
Thank you for the link, Gma! I hope your dentist appointment went smoothly.
L.Ann, you had a busy day with DF and Little Bit
Helian, that's such good news about your DMum now you're able to have a more active part in her care. And, although none of us like going, good dental care is so important!
Bama, yes all three of the kitties are indoor kitties, although Freddie does go for walks on his harness. That poem is so apt!

Trissie, I'm.sorry work is so trying ATM. Is it an end of financial year / start of financial year thing?
I never made it back here yesterday - I got downstairs clean and tidy, then DH launched for his choral and the kitties fed, and then I just lay down on the bed for a couple of hours, before deciding to actually go to bed!
Today I'm feeling less tired, but my tummy is feeling slightly "off". I'm not sure if it's a stress reaction, or whether I've picked something up for Freddie, or whether I've made some unwise (for me) food choices. But I don't have to go anywhere today, DH is at the office and out this evening, so I can concentrate on small "light" meals and staying hydrated. And no Easter chocolate!

- had a lovely reply - they're 99% sure it isn't one of theirs . I need to reply with a "thank you"
Pick up my footprints! (Thank you, RRose!)
House tasks: clean gutters and the swan neck on the downpipes where "stuff" tends to accumulate, clean cladding back and front and downpipes, and short return wall as well. Replace the bit of mortar that's fallen out of the edge of the roof (I think its called the verge?) , fix dripping kitchen tap ( new washer?), sort out cabinet that wobbles, fix garage guttering that's loose at one end and bending down. More as I think of them? Texted 10/3
and 14/4
If no reply by the end of the month, then definitely look for someone else (DF PM is also starting to become exasperated with his reluctance)
Steps to take to find a replacement: ask friends, look on local sources eg Nextdoor for recommendations
I may have to split the jobs between different people this year if I can't find someone who's good at a variety of skills, so:
For gutter cleaning, Dneighbours R and A used Ben's gutters -are they pleased with the work? Does BG also clean cladding? Do they have a website? Yes
Also The E Gutter Cleaners -they have good reviews
Prepare my "job spec" WIP
Fill in free quote forms for both the above companies
Wait and see the results!
Kitchen tap - DF E has given me the phone number if her plumber . I think DF CW also has a plumber she is happy with?
Garage gutter - probably a handyman needed here - Text /message a few likely candidates and see what happens. Does Dneighbour R2 do handyman type jobs? I know he's done work for Dneighbour R in the past, but that was larger jobs, like laying a path!
Pick a new podiatrist from my "short list"
Book an appointment !
Take up and hem those thick winter curtains for the kitchen
Book eye test for me
Find picture hanging equipment for DH
Sort prints and put in albums (this will probably be an activity to do on wet days!) WIP I am now working on 2024
Think about setting up Guardianship for F,J and M - looked on Cats' Protection, I need their microchip numbers, approximate DOB, colour and markings and useful information about them. Bookmark link with local recommended solicitors (also ask DF CW?)
Change health centres to the one nearest us? On hold ATM , but I'll leave it on my list so I don't forget.

Re: Willow Flute Wednesday
I've made progress this morning. Since DH has been launched, I've caught up on correspondence, and PUPA/ quick dust and hoover upstairs, and rounded up all the rubbish to take to the wheelie bins. Freddie has eaten this breakfast and is now on top of his cupboard. His tummy still isn't quite "right", but he seems much happier in himself, which is a massive improvement from Sunday. He has an appointment on Tuesday for his Solensia, so if he's still not "right" by then, I'll mention in it to the vet. Of he shows any worrying signs, I'll ring for an appointment before then, but I'm hopeful it won't come to that. He shows no sign of wanting a walk (it's chilly and quite windy out), but that may change when I start gathering everything together.
When I've done the bins I'll go for my walk, and have some time in my garden.

Re: Willow Flute Wednesday
WTG with all your exercise before 9 a.m., L Ann. We're having leftovers tonight too.
Don't get blown away on your walk, Kitty!
I'm missing trissie this morning.
The sun is shining and the forecast high today is 75*F.
It is the first day of the 4th session at our school, and I'm not ready yet, but I'm teaching the same class (with a different textbook), and have almost all the same students I had last session, which means it is going to be a very social talkative class which has its pros -- especially for a language class -- and its cons. LOL!
Dinner guests were here until almost 9:30 pm. It was good, but I was pretty tired and done socializing by the end of the day. I'm so happy to have an evening at home without hosting anyone tonight.

Re: Willow Flute Wednesday
Good morning/ good afternoon, L. Ann and Helian!
Helian, I can see that having a talkative class would be good, so long as they're practising their English when they talk, and not chattering away in their native language (s)!
I had a nice little long walk, right to the top of the estate, so I could check out the latest round in of roadworks and road closures. One of the main arterial roads from the city is being closed for 6 weeks, so National Grid can dig A Hole.
(Why this couldn't have been done at the same time as the gas guys were in the vicinity is a question I shall raise when / if we get any canvassers for the local council elections). However, I've worked out my own diversion through some back roads, which I think will be quicker than the "official" one. ( Does no one realise it's not a good idea to have extra traffic passing a school at.drop off and collection times?) At least so far, the temporary traffic lights haven't appeared. Temporary traffic lights don't seem to fare too well on our estate. They usually end up being laid very carefully on their side in the gutter, "so they don't fall into the road when it's windy and cause a dangerous obstruction!!!"
I've had some time in my garden and some lap time with Fred. It's now more than time.to start my kitchen!!
