There's surprisingly few bands/singers beginning with "F" in the 80's, and since The Wall was released on 30 November 1979, I'm gonna go with Pink Floyd :-) Dogged, I'l try to write something about Czech pop music in the 80's, but as there was still censorship in place and the regime preferred very... boring stuff, there's not much to write home about :-)

Anyways, ladies and gentlemen, I give you THE PINK FLOYD!

Pink Floyd are an English rock band formed in London in 1965. Gaining an early following as one of the first British psychedelic groups, they were distinguished by their extended compositions, sonic experiments, philosophical lyrics, and elaborate live shows, and became a leading progressive rock band.

Pink Floyd were founded in 1965 by Syd Barrett (guitar, lead vocals), Nick Mason (drums), Roger Waters (bass guitar, vocals) and Richard Wright (keyboards, vocals). With Barrett as their main songwriter, they released two hit singles, "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play", and the successful debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (all 1967). David Gilmour (guitar, vocals) joined in 1967; Barrett left in 1968 due to deteriorating mental health.

While all four members contributed compositions, Waters became the primary lyricist and thematic leader, devising the concepts behind Pink Floyd's most successful albums, The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979). The musical film based on The Wall, Pink Floyd – The Wall (1982), won two BAFTAs. Pink Floyd also composed several film scores.

Following personal tensions, Wright left Pink Floyd in 1981, followed by Waters in 1985. Gilmour and Mason continued as Pink Floyd, rejoined later by Wright. They produced the albums A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994), both backed by major tours. In 2005, all but Barrett reunited for a performance at the global awareness event Live 8. Barrett died in 2006 and Wright in 2008. The last Pink Floyd studio album, The Endless River (2014), was based on unreleased material from the Division Bell recording sessions. In 2022, Gilmour and Mason reformed Pink Floyd to release the song "Hey, Hey, Rise Up!" in protest of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

By 2013, Pink Floyd had sold more than 250 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and are among the best-selling albums of all time. Four Pink Floyd albums topped the US Billboard 200 and five topped the UK Albums Chart. Their hit singles include "Arnold Layne" (1967), "See Emily Play" (1967), "Money" (1973), "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2" (1979), "Not Now John" (1983), "On the Turning Away" (1987) and "High Hopes" (1994). Pink Floyd were inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2008, they were awarded the Polar Music Prize for "their monumental contribution over the decades to the fusion of art and music in the development of popular culture".

As I mentioned, the 80's were a time of censorship. "Rock music" was considered not socialist enough or something, so the "mainstream" was a bizarre set of singers who participated in vaudevilles which were aired on TV. Especially popular were the New Year's Eve ones, that everybody watched. Here's a preview:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvc1TbtYBd8
basically, every single one of these people was a well known local "star" - the scary thing is that many of them are still popular and if you ask me, they are as bad as they were in the 1980'! :-)

Another category would be the underground and exile musicians. Probably the best known of those would be Karel Kryl, dubbed as "Czech Bob Dylan", because of the complexity of his lyrics, his accompaniment by a single acoustic guitar, and his great popularity. Czech, with its conjugation, declination and very precise pronunciation, is a very, very unforgiving language to compose lyrics, and Karel Kryl's songs remains unparalleled in this regard due to their highly poetic and sophisticated nature, with perfect rhyming and a frequent use of metaphors and historical allusions
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed6Y_PO1QXM
it's actually with English subtitles so you can enjoy it too!

The rock bands of the 1980's were either amateur underground (because this style was considered unsuitable for a socialist society, with imperialistic western ideology or something), or tame pop with unprovoking and self-redacted lyrics. Some of them survived and evolved, but quite frankly, I don't think any of them is really worth mentioning :-)

There were also folk singers and folk bands, and some of them were really good, and since the one thing young people around here could do was camping, and singing with a guitarre at a camp fire was very popular, those songs spread like fire. Yes, I still have a handwritten lyrics notebook with guitarre chords somewhere (I did play acoustic guitarre too). The good one would be Jaromir Nohavica (he's gone full mental Russian-loving a**e since and it's so disappointing, because his songs are a huge part of my youth and it sours the memories):

oookay, that's probably too much info, but hey, you learn something new every day! :-)

And now to the regular broadcasting!

Make a plan, they say, God needs a laugh, they don't say! The tires for DH's car were not delivered yesterday, and hopefully they should be coming in today, but I don't know when! Also, DBD woke up feeling a bit warm, and she's running a low grade fever, so no school for her today. At least I got the floors downstairs done yesterday, so she can occupy the living room couch and watch TV while I work!
I need to take the kids shopping this afternoon, DS needs sneakers, the twins need wind jackets, and a gift for tomorrow's birthday party that they are attending. I think we can still do that, though.

Good morning ,Trissie, and thank you for another musical start. Pink Floyd were another favourite, especially the line which went "We don't need no thought control" in "We don't need no education"! Looking back, I can definitely see how that would appeal to a teenager! Sorry about all the added complications to your life today!

It was very interesting to read about the heritage and challenges of Czech music. I can't imagine what it must have been like to live under a repressive regime that monitored everything. And, of course, we took our freedom for granted . I can still remember the uproar back in the 1980s (1984, iirc) when "Relax" by Frankie goes to Hollywood got banned by the BBC. (Probably best not to look up the lyrics!)

L.Ann, a sandpit full of nice clean sand sounds like hours of fun. Did DD eventually enjoy hanging out with Little Bit? :D

Helian, your DMum is having a *much* better quality of life since she moved to the NH near you. Exciting news about your DS and DDIL. Have they shared the due date for their baby yet?

Today BIl arrives for the weekend. DH has been up since 0 dark 00 " getting things ready". His idea of "getting things ready " is to pick up everything in the spare room that he doesn't know what to do with, and dumping it in our bedroom. :x So that's something else for me to deal with - it can wait until later, though. I want to spend time in my garden today as it's going to be nice again :D

It's also our neighbourhood garden party tomorrow, so I need to do some prep for that (possibly during the heat of the day when it's best to be inside anyway?) And liaise with DF CW - does she have any idea of numbers we can expect? It's very interesting, that all of the older neighbours almost immediately replied to the invitation either verbally when they saw one of us, or with a quick text, (we did put RSVP together with contact phone numbers on the invitation) either accepting or declining, but very few of the younger people have replied. Is it a generation thing? IDK! It doesn't matter, as we've got plenty of food and drink - DF CW sent me a WhatsApp yesterday of all the goodies she had bought - but it would be nice to know who to expect!

Thanks for the interesting start, trissie! I do remember that Pink Floyd song. :) I'll come back later and read about Czech bands. I hope DBD feels better soon.
Oh wow - your party is tomorrow, Kitty. Best of luck with the final preparations. I think RSVP-ing is a generation thing. Although, our friends the Cs (in 40s) are awful at it while AA (early 30s) is good at it. Our own DDs (late 20s) are OK at it - not great -- but we're their parents.

I actually really like the song "Relax". LOL! It's on my running playlist - it has a good beat and energy, though the lyrics aren't the most appropriate.

Has decaf made her way here? Thinking I haven't seen her for a while.

I don't think I got back here yesterday. I made progress on most goals - except for jogging. I haven't jogged for almost 2 weeks now. And my body and spirit feel it. :? I really need to build that habit back into my schedule. I think caring for mom, in person visits and phone calls, emails, etc. is taking up much more of my time - and is affecting my moods more - than I'd anticipated. Maybe I'm making progress? Not sure. . . Every task I complete seems to result in more. She was not very engaged yesterday, which was also a downer. I need to not fret about it so much. I did figure out the process to get her med records in Illinois - assuming I can get them from 5-10 years in the past. I think I'll take the information request form to the Dr. appointment on Wednesday and see which info they'd like.

Added events to my calendar. I'm not happy about the first 2 weekends in June. This Saturday is blissfully open - Sunday is a 3 event day (church, CG2, and hosting dinner for up to 7 people). Yay for regular busyness, though I don't relish the 3 event Sundays. Next weekend (May 31-June 1) currently has 6 events - one each morning, one each afternoon, and one each evening (including church and hosting Sunday dinner). :? The following weekend (June 7-8) is a 5 event weekend, with 4 events on Sunday :? and a wedding on Saturday. I won't go further in my calendar.

Today: The only thing on my calendar is payroll, but I have other things I need to do, like visit Mom, JOG, and perhaps get to Kroger.

Main Goals for Today
1. Payroll: finish grading HWs and update gradelink week 5
2. Payroll: prep and teach AAS D14
3. Payroll: start end of session tasks?
4. JOG
5. Visit Mom - keep it brief
6. Kroger?
7. Dinner: tamales, rice, green salad

Next:
- payroll: finish grading HWs turned in
- payroll: update gradelink week 5
- some qt

Later:
- back exercises
- s2s and self care
- payroll: prep AAS D14
- reclaim kitchen
- lights: f and p/a
- clean sheets on bed?
- finalize groc. list
- ask re: hospice care for Mom (she's get more attention, like 2 visits/ week from a RN)
- progress with getting test results to Mom's PA?
- Kroger at some point (or online order?)
- visit Mom
- lunch
- otd to payroll by 12:30 if possible (end of session party - I want to write a note on the good bye note for 1 student)
- payroll: end of session party
- payroll: "teach" AAS D14 (traditionally, not many students show up; they know we've already submitted a participation grade for the week.)
- payroll: start end of session tasks
- change clothes
- JOG
- dinner: tamales, rice, green salad
- after dinner clean up
- duo
