Wilhelm Richard Wagner (/ˈvɑːɡnər/ VAHG-nər; German: [ˈʁɪçaʁt ˈvaːɡnɐ]; 22 May 1813 – 13 February 1883) was a German composer, theatre director, essayist, and conductor who is chiefly known for his operas (or, as some of his mature works were later known, "music dramas"). Unlike most opera composers, Wagner wrote both the libretto and the music for each of his stage works. Initially establishing his reputation as a composer of works in the romantic vein of Carl Maria von Weber and Giacomo Meyerbeer, Wagner revolutionised opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk ("total work of art"), whereby he sought to synthesise the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, with music subsidiary to drama. The drama was to be presented as a continuously sung narrative, without conventional operatic structures like arias and recitatives. He described this vision in a series of essays published between 1849 and 1852. Wagner realised these ideas most fully in the first half of the 16-hour, four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung, also known simply as The Ring).
Wagner's compositions, particularly those of his later period, are notable for their complex textures, rich harmonies and orchestration, and the elaborate use of leitmotifs—musical phrases associated with individual characters, places, ideas, or plot elements. His advances in musical language, such as extreme chromaticism and quickly shifting tonal centres, greatly influenced the development of classical music; his Tristan und Isolde is regarded as an important precursor towards modern music. As he matured, he softened his ideological stance against traditional operatic forms (i.e., arias, ensembles and choruses), reintroducing them into his last few stage works, including Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg) and Parsifal.
To properly present his vision of the works, Wagner had his own opera house built to his specifications: the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, which featured many innovative design elements intended to immerse the audience in the drama. The premieres of The Ring and Parsifal took place there, and his most important stage works are performed at the annual Bayreuth Festival. The early success of the festival was secured by the efforts of his wife, Cosima Wagner, and has since been maintained by their descendants, attracting audiences from around the world.
Wagner's unorthodox operas, essays, and personal dealings engendered considerable controversy during his lifetime, and continue to do so. Declared a "genius" by some and a "disease" by others, his music is widely performed, but his views on religion, politics, and social life are debated—most notably on the extent to which his antisemitism finds expression in his stage and prose works. on the Lohengrin topic, I have a cool story that happened to a friend. At the end of Lohengrin, the title character leaves on a boat carried by a swan/dove. But at that one show my friend attended, there was a stage communication failure and the technicians pulled away the boat before he was able to embark on it. But the singer was oh so cool, finished his aria, then walked to the front of the stage and asked the audience "Does anybody know when the next swan leaves?" and then calmly walked off

Trying to decide why I should get out of bed today... Oh yes, I need to earn money. Isn't that the main reason people go to work? Siw months ago I sort of enjoyed my job, now I just do my job. MrNG keeps reminding me that many people don't enjoy their job and it's perfectly normal. I've been thinking about how it was better when I was a school teacher, but maybe I don't remember it well - there were hard days too. Anyway I will get out of bed (and hurry) and MrNG stays home to watch over the kids (Wednesdays, no primary school). He has a job interview next Wednesday (kids will go to daycare) and a paid mission (his own business) all day Tuesday, so he's actually working from home today.

Wow, so much going on before I am even done with the morning drop-off!
Frenchie, no real advice, other than "do look for another job". There's a difference between "not enjoying job" and "not wanting to get out of bed because you have to go to work"!
Dogged, what time zone are you in? I was just chatting with DH who still has a Wednesday and is doing his evening shift in the hotel - it's not even late for him yet in Oregon!
So, Wednesday. Because of an online course running from 1pm to 3:30pm, I am working from home (I could make it to school on time, but I just don't feel like doing the overtime). Still working on basic research, and since it's a headache inducing job, I will take frequent cleaning breaks to compensate!

FFB, I do feel for you, actively disliking your job so much. Of course Mr NG is right when he said the main purpose of working is to earn money, but it's sooo helpful to one's wellbeing if at least part of the job is enjoyable, or one is at least able to derive satisfaction from it. Hopefully Mr NG's financial fortunes will improve soon,.which should take some pressure off you. Trissie has some very wise advice.
Helian,.you asked yesterday whether the stream was in a park? Yes, it runs through part of our local valley park. This isn't the same as a traditional city "park" with swings etc for children and other attractions, but, rather, a more natural, wild area, with a good collection of wild flowers, birds and animals .(It is still "managed" by the local wildlife trust to prevent total chaos, as no one wants impenetrable brambles taking over! ) There are gravel paths for walking on and also a few benches to sit on. It can get very muddy in winter with all the wet weather, so I usually walk round the estate then!
DH goes to the office today, so I need to make the most of the last quiet day this week. I may have to leave my walk until later, as I'm expecting a package today -it all depends on the postman. And it's going to be hot today, so I'll try and clean the kitchen.duri g the heat of the day and before the sun moves round to shine through the kitchen window!

FrenchFly, I feel for you. I have basically disengaged from my company. Not from the customers, whom I actually like, but from the company itself. My goal is to put one foot in front of the other like a pony in a pony ride and nothing more. That doesn't come naturally to me, but it can be a sanity saver until you are ready to move on.
I am in Eastern Time, trissie, or UTC-4. Oregon is in Pacific Time (UTC-7), like Lauralind.
Your Inner Brat must be much more disciplined than mine, as I don't think mine would ever accept cleaning as compensation for anything, LOL.
That is an excellent plan of cleaning before the sun has a chance to heat the room up, Kittykatt.

Your Inner Brat must be much more disciplined than mine, as I don't think mine would ever accept cleaning as compensation for anything, LOL.

Yeah, Gma is still up. Need to take ddog outside 1 more time. Then set my alarm for 6am.
Mom's house won't be sold while she's alive. Stop to think about how much work it would be to divide the contents among the children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, then get rid of furniture, Christmas decorations and all the other seasons. Accumulation of over 70 years in the same house.
I bring a few of her favorite seasonal decorations to her NH room. I need a place to keep her off season clothes. I don't have room in my house. There are things I like about her house, better than mine. My siblings need place to stay when they come.
All reasons to keep her house while she's alive.
I don't know Canadian geography well. I'm 4 hours south of lake Superior, and about half hour west, if you start at what I think of as the wolf's nose.

Sleep well, Gma! I can understand how all the work to deal with your DMum's house would be overwhelming. Does your DSis#2 genuinely not "see" her messes, or does she assume "someone" will clear it up?
I have been trying a new routine on those Wednesday mornings when DH goes to the office. As soon as he's left, I run round upstairs doing a quick PUPA, dust and Hoover, before jumping in the shower, so I can tick upstairs off my list. Of course this isn't going to work when he's home, and I'll have to think again when he retires, but for now, it's working for me.
