The River Stour is a 61 mile (98 km) river, which flows through Wiltshire and Dorset in southern England, and drains into the English Channel. The catchment area for the river and its tributaries is listed as 480 square miles (1,240 km2).
It is sometimes called the Dorset Stour to distinguish it from other rivers of the same name in Kent, Suffolk and the Midlands. According to Brewer's Dictionary of Britain & Ireland, the name Stour rhymes with hour and derives from Old English meaning "violent", "fierce" or the "fierce one".
The river burst its banks at Christchurch during the 2013–14 winter floods and 100 residents were evacuated.
The Stour valley has produced rich evidence for early human (Palaeolithic) activity. Gravel pits in the lower reaches of the river (many underlying modern day Bournemouth) produced hundreds of Lower Palaeolithic handaxes when they were quarried, particular during the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Archaeological investigations around 2010 near Corfe Mullen suggested that some of the artefacts from those quarries may be around 400,000 to 500,000 years old.
The source of the river is fed from greensand springs at Stourhead, in Wiltshire,[18] where it forms a series of artificial lakes which are part of the Stourhead estate owned by the National Trust] It flows south into Dorset through the Blackmore Vale and the towns of Gillingham and Sturminster Newton.
At Marnhull the Stour is joined by the River Cale and then (two miles downstream) by the River Lydden. At Blandford Forum the river breaks through the chalk ridge of the Dorset Downs, and from there flows south east into the heathlands of south east Dorset. At Wimborne Minster it is joined by the River Allen, and at its estuary at Christchurch it is joined by the River Avon before it flows through the harbour into the English Channel.
From source to estuary, the river falls approximately 750 feet (230 m) over its 60 mi (97 km) length.
For many miles the river is followed by the route of the now disused Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, which bridged the river four times in a 9 mile (14 km) section between Sturminster Newton and Blandford Forum.[23]
Because much of the river's course is across clay soil, the river's water level varies greatly. In summer, low water level makes the river a diverse and important habitat, supporting many rare plants. In winter, the river often floods, and is therefore bordered by wide and fertile flood plains.
A number of towns and villages in Dorset are named after the river, including East Stour, West Stour, Stourpaine, Stourton Caundle, Stour Row, Stour Provost, Sturminster Newton, and Sturminster Marshall. Sturminster Newton is famous for its water mill and town bridge, which still bears the notice warning potential vandals that damaging the bridge is punishable by penal transportation!

Kittykatt, thanks for the start ! I see you've done some gardening later yesterday. I did that too. Sorry the pollen is back.
Today is sunny but the temperatures will be lower, so we should enjoy the day more. It was nice to have almost three hours alone in the house yesterday, and the kids enjoyed the beach with MrNG. I hope I can relax today, and maybe read for a while.
I also want to write down our planning for June / July, there are many small events before the school is over (5th July). And if I could cross things off my weekly list, things I keep postponing, I would like it.

Good morning, lovies!
The party was great, but exhausting. It's always like this - I really could use a butler /maid to help with serving, operating the BBQ etc! Somehow, this was the year nobody brought over any meat for BBQ and only one person brought BBQ sausages, so there was only just about enough food for everybody (I am sure next year will be the one when I will need extra space in the freezer to deal with all the leftovers). I mean, we put the last batch of massala chicken on at 8pm and there's one package of BBQ sausages left, but that's not comfortable enough in my book
People were also eating a lof of side dishes, I had to make two extra servings of the bulgur salad and one extra serving of pasta salad (as both are really easy to do, I prefer to make slightly smaller batches and then make more so it's always fresh). I guess we must be getting older if most people drink soda / non-alcoholic beer and eat vegetable salads with a smaller serving of meat, and everybody leaves by 9pm

Is there a museum of the River Stout archeological findings and did you visit it, kittykatt?
I gotta get started on after-party clean-up (dishes got taken care of yesterday, but there's still stuff to do) and the Mt. Ironmore/Foldmore will soon be taller than me, so that's gonna be the goal for today. And I think the cherries are ripe, so if DH harvests them, I will have to make something about that too. But first things first!

Your parties always sound amazing. It sounds like you managed the food well, trissie. Makes sense to make up those salads fresh if they're not too much work. I hope dh felt celebrated!

I had never heard of the Stour River before Kitty. I'm also curious about the archaeological findings. I really enjoy visiting and learning from archaeological sites!
Yesterday was great - but also exhausting. I left the house around 3 pm to pick up friend KY. From then on it was: coffee with KY - a stop by the girls' house - dinner out with the dhs - the music concert together
we were home again at 11 pm. I still had to deal with laundry.
The Ys will be here in 35 minutes. We are going together to the AME church. We let them choose between the AME or the Anglican church. (They attend a Greek Orthodox church in Austin, TX.) We will offer lunch to them and then just deal with things after that. I do need to go visit my mom between 1 and 2. And we still need to pack for 5 days in civilization (Chicago area) and then 2 days camping. I have essential food items to get us through bfast tomorrow; I'll go grocery shopping tomorrow. I'm planning on bringing 2 meals from our freezer, and we will do some cooking - and go out once! We will indulge in glutenous food!!
AA is staying with us so meals will need to be for 3 people.

Hello everyone, thanks for all your prayers for us, our dd died in the Hospice late Wednesday night. Of course we still need your prayers as we go forward without her. Thank you.
