The great spotted woodpecker
(Dendrocopos major) Is not afraid to make itself heard. It is equipped with a toolkit that makes it a true woodland specialist. Its strong beak and shock-absorbing skull are perfect for finding food and making its home among the trees.
Great spotted woodpeckers have white cheeks with black lines underneath and a black cap. Males can be identified by a red patch on the back of the neck. The beak is thick and powerful. They have a pale breast with black upper parts, and a bright red rump. Their wings are black with white spots. Great spotted woodpeckers are not as large as many people imagine, being slightly smaller than a blackbird on average.
Insects are the great spotted woodpecker's main prey. It uses its powerful beak to hammer holes in tree bark and then extracts beetle larvae with its long, flexible tongue. Caterpillars, adult beetles and spiders are also taken. In spring, the chicks and eggs of smaller birds are often eaten. Species that nest in tree cavities are targeted as woodpeckers can use their beaks to access these spaces. Nuts and seeds are also an important food source, particularly in winter.
The great spotted woodpecker’s beak plays a key role in its breeding behaviour. Males use it to hammer against dead trees, making a drumming sound. This proclaims ownership of its territory, warning off any rivals. Such activity would cause brain damage among most birds, but woodpeckers have a shock-absorbing skull that means they are not affected by the impact.
The beak is also used to excavate a nesting cavity within a tree. Once the hole is ready, four to six eggs are laid inside in April or March. They hatch after around two weeks and chicks spend just over three weeks in the nest before fledging.
Great spotted woodpeckers can be found across mainland Britain, but are limited to the west of Ireland. Mature broadleaved woodland is prime habitat, but great spotted woodpeckers can occur in coniferous woodland and parks or gardens with plenty of mature trees.
Listening out for the great spotted woodpecker’s distinctive drumming is the easiest way to tell if the species is around. You might also see the holes woodpeckers have made in tree trunks when hunting.
Sightings in woodland are often fleeting, as these birds can be shy of humans. The best views are often available in gardens, where woodpeckers are attracted to feeders containing nuts, seeds and suet.
The great spotted woodpecker population is doing well and has increased by more than 300% since the 1970s. It’s thought the species may have benefited from an increase in dead wood caused by Dutch elm disease, as well as the availability of food in gardens. As this species relies on mature trees and woodland, it’s important that these habitats are protected to safeguard the great spotted woodpecker’s future.

Good morning, everyone, and happy Wednesday!
So far today I have finally managed to send out the email for parish lunch. DH very kindly scanned the menu sheets for me last night and emailed them to me , and also printed copies for the sign up sheet for those people who don't have email ( I don't want to leave the originals at the back of church in case they "disappear"). So, with a bit of wrestling, I've managed to send it to everyone on the mailing list. And I've emailed the churchwarden to ask if she can update the listing on the weekly newsletter. And all this before 8 am!! Now all I have to do is remember to take the hard copy of the sign up sheet with me to church tomorrow.
The Girls are asleep on on the bed, so I need to get up very carefully, so as not to disturb them.

Things that need to happen at home before DH retires!
Reorganise office (DH wants a new to him desk that work is getting rid of. Can I empty the tallboy and move it into the bedroom? Remember to measure at its widest point to see if it will fit!
More decluttering in bedroom - drawers under the bed, my clothes (a continuous process!)
Kitchen - measure for fridge, measure where bins are going to go. Order new fridge. Move freezer to where current fridge is now? Go through cubby hole which houses miscellaneous "stuff", including the surplus from my dolls house project (this is on a pause now until the winter, but I have all the pieces I need, ... and a lot of surplus!
Get it all out and divide into lots. WIP
Do I have enough boxes and bubble wrap? I think so
Clean everything so it looks its best and photograph.
Write description and list on eBay. Remember to state we are a smoke free home.I can do most of this this one box at a time, so it isn't overwhelming .
Once the boxes are sealed and wrapped and labelled with the contents, I can store them in the garage.
Decide what is going back in cubby hole - gardening trug? Extension cable, spare boxes of cat food? Will my folding chair fit? Yes

We see woodpeckers here fairly regularly, mainly red-bellied and downy ones. Sometimes, the red-headed species. I grew up in a house built with redwood. It was designed by an architect professor at the big U in the town where I grew up (and where my father was also an engineering professor). Once in a while, I remember my parents being miffed because a woodpecker was pecking on the house. 
Ironically, redwood is resistant to insects, so I don't know what those woodpeckers were finding; maybe they were looking?
WTG with sending out the lunch email, Kitty. It sounds like you are very thorough in providing all the necessary info.
The CG2 cook out last night was tasty and fun! We've decided to study the book of Acts next. It's very long, so we'll do half of it and then re-evaluate. We got home around 9 pm. That was the last of 5 scheduled evenings in a row. Dh said he's looking forward to some evenings with just me. We're the only ones in our first bnb; dd27 and dd29 are in another one with friends.
Today is a travel day. We're leaving at 2 pm. I'll be finishing getting things ready before we leave.
Before we leave at 2 pm:
- finish the snail mail bills
- check account; the summer property taxes going out in the mail today are very high
- buy yogurt for Mom
- stock Mom's fridge + visit her (short)
- pay Mom's med bill
- cancel Mom's urology appt.
- finish packing: clothes, toiletries, books, electronics
- print out bnb info
- perhaps find airline member # for wifi; dh also has it.
- set up a jigsaw puzzle on my laptop

Yikes on spilled milk doggedly. Makes extra work but probably good getting everything taken out.
Well I'm here. I honestly think if I hope to I could work the way I feel but thankful I'm off today. I came through fairly well. Must have just been the super rough prep last time. Making me feel so weak and out of it. I am grateful now that I did the turkey the other week as broth was in the fridge and frozen cooked turkey. Very little effort and I made turkey noodles soup . Enough leftover for today along with a decent breakfast and supper and I should be back to normal. Test thankfully came out good so I don't have to do it again for quite some years. Yay.
Today's plan. Eat well. Rest some. Gradual whb . See if ddil and dgs want to come for a bit. I probably shouldn't drive till later today they said 24 hrs. But I probably will need some groceries. Excuse not to go out to mom and dad's.

Yikes on spilled milk doggedly. Makes extra work but probably good getting everything taken out.
Well I'm here. I honestly think if I hope to I could work the way I feel but thankful I'm off today. I came through fairly well. Must have just been the super rough prep last time. Making me feel so weak and out of it. I am grateful now that I did the turkey the other week as broth was in the fridge and frozen cooked turkey. Very little effort and I made turkey noodles soup . Enough leftover for today along with a decent breakfast and supper and I should be back to normal. Test thankfully came out good so I don't have to do it again for quite some years. Yay.
Today's plan. Eat well. Rest some. Gradual whb . See if ddil and dgs want to come for a bit. I probably shouldn't drive till later today they said 24 hrs. But I probably will need some groceries. Excuse not to go out to mom and dad's.

Thank you for the encouragement re parish lunch. This is the first time I've actually had to *do* anything to organise it, except just to say, "turn up"! And two people have already emailed me their menu choices, so there will at least be three of us (and hopefully, more!).
How very interesting about the woodpecker, Helian. I'm glad you had a lovely evening. Acts is a good book to study, but, as you say, long. But, OTOH it is quite fast moving! Safe travels today!

I've stapled the sign up sheet to the menu for those people who would like to come to lunch, but don't do email. And it's now by the front door, so I remember to take it with me to church tomorrow. Freddie has had his walk, and I've dusted and run the hoover round upstairs, and had some time in my front garden, which was in the shade. The back will have to wait until this evening when it's cooled down . And now I need to stop procrastinating, and clean my kitchen!

Find picture hanging equipment for DH
Sort prints and put in albums (this will probably be an activity to do on wet days!) WIP I am now working on 2024
Think about setting up Guardianship for F,J and M - looked on Cats' Protection, I need their microchip numbers, approximate DOB, colour and markings and useful information about them. Bookmark link with local recommended solicitors (also ask DF CW?)

Reorganise office (DH wants a new to him desk that work is getting rid of. Can I empty the tallboy and move it into the bedroom? Remember to measure at its widest point to see if it will fit!
More decluttering in bedroom - drawers under the bed, my clothes (a continuous process!)
Kitchen - measure for fridge, measure where bins are going to go. Order new fridge. Move freezer to where current fridge is now? Go through cubby hole which houses miscellaneous "stuff", including the surplus from my dolls house project (this is on a pause now until the winter, but I have all the pieces I need, ... and a lot of surplus!
Get it all out and divide into lots. WIP
Do I have enough boxes and bubble wrap? I think so
Clean everything so it looks its best and photograph.
Write description and list on eBay. Remember to state we are a smoke free home.I can do most of this this one box at a time, so it isn't overwhelming .
Once the boxes are sealed and wrapped and labelled with the contents, I can store them in the garage.
