Sir Alexander Fleming FRS FRSE FRCS[2] (6 August 1881 – 11 March 1955) was a Scottish physician and microbiologist, best known for discovering the world's first broadly effective antibiotic substance, which he named penicillin. His discovery in 1928 of what was later named benzylpenicillin (or penicillin G) from the mould Penicillium rubens has been described as the "single greatest victory ever achieved over disease". For this discovery, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 with Howard Florey and Ernst Chain.

He also discovered the enzyme lysozyme in 1922, and along with it a bacterium he named Micrococcus lysodeikticus, later renamed Micrococcus luteus.

Fleming was knighted for his scientific achievements in 1944. In 1999, he was named in Time magazine's list of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th century. In 2002, he was chosen in the BBC's television poll for determining the 100 Greatest Britons.

Alexander Fleming really changed the world, kittykatt! So many ailments are so easy to treat with antibiotics but used to be fatal.

Up and having a slow morning. It's gonna be HOT, so I better speed up and go get groceries ASAP. My parents are coming tomorrow for a (belated) birthday celebration for DBD, and I will also have to pack the kids, who are leaving on Sunday with DH for a week in Southern Moravia (it's four male friends and 10 kids of roughly the same age renting a B&B, he tried it for four days last year and now he's confident he can do the full week). House is not OK, but getting there - there is a lot fo stray hunting in my future, but at least floors are no longer sticky and crunchy!

Good afternoon, Trissie!
Have I read your post correctly, and you're going to have a whole week by yourself, with DH taking all the kids away? :D I'm sure if nothing else it will make him appreciate everything you do!

It's hot here today as well - were supposed to reach 30C, but it's sunny with a dry heat, so that makes all the difference. This morning I was up and out early into town, so I could visit M&S Foodhall before my hair appointment. I took the insulated cool bag with me, so the reduced chicken and pork I scored were quite safe. It was also a good receptacle for their reduced tenderstem broccoli and their (not reduced, but I like it , especially as it's not "ultra processed" and a little goes a long way) chocolate. And there was just room for the half price summer dress that jumped into my basket  (That was from The Nobody's Child concession - I've never tried that brand before, as they're supposed to fit "small", but this one is flattering in all the right places, and skims over the parts one would rather hide, although IMHO it's a little too low cut for church, especially if I'm on chalice!)

I e sprayed to roses in the front garden as that's still in the shade, and fed the pot out there, but the back garden will have to wait on until it's cooler. I'm currently sitting on my folding chair in the shade under the canopy. :D

OH wow, trissie, so -- you'll have a week in the house - by yourself?! 8-) Do you have any special plans or projects for this time?
Kitty, the whole world is very grateful to Alexander Fleming. Ooh - a new summer dress!! Enjoy!
Doggedly, I had a quieter evening because dh is out of town. :)

I'm starting day 2 of 6 days on my own with dh out of town. M is still here, though, but she's not around the living areas very much.

This afternoon, I need to do the GGT emails to teachers. I'd also like to make progress on: cleaning the fridge, towel laundry, reading, and writing. Walking would be good as well.

- payroll: GGT emails
- email MM re: coffee
- walk

To clarify - no, I will not have the house to myself all week, because... I'm leaving on the jet plane (though I know exactly when I am coming back :-) ) Wednesday morning, I am leaving for Paris! I'm super excited. Last time I was there, was the honeymoon with my ex some 25 years ago. Oh, and I was there for a business trip, back when I was freshly pregnant with DS14.

L.Ann, any chance that DDyoungest could actually spend a day with one of her sisters so that you would get your 24 hours?
How's the hiking weather for DH, helia?
kittykatt, I think DH knows exactly how much I do - I mean, with DBD's hospital stays in the past, he was thrown into the "working single dad of three small kids" several times, and he's managed just fine! It's comforting to know that should something happen to me, him and the kids would manage. There would probably not be any homemade cakes or pre-Christmas deep cleaning, but there would be homeworks, dinners and clean laundry and swept floors!
