Re: White board Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
A whiteboard (also known as marker board, dry-erase board, dry-wipe board, and pen-board) is a glossy, usually white surface for making non-permanent markings. Whiteboards are analogous to blackboards, but with a smoother surface allowing for rapid marking and erasing of markings on their surface. The popularity of whiteboards increased rapidly in the mid-1990s and they have become a fixture in many offices, meeting rooms, school classrooms, public events and other work environments.
The term whiteboard is also used metaphorically in reference to features of computer software applications that simulate whiteboards. Such "virtual tech whiteboards" allow one or more people to write or draw images on a simulated canvas. This is a common feature of many virtual meetings, collaborations, and instant messaging applications.
It has been widely reported that Korean War veteran and photographer Martin Heit and Albert Stallion, an employee at Alliance, a leading flat rolled steel sheet supplier, should be credited with the invention of the whiteboard in the 1950s. Heit and Stallion may have popularized and/or perfected whiteboards, but in reality the history of whiteboards long precedes them. A thorough examination of the invention of whiteboards reveals that the concept was introduced two decades earlier by mechanical engineer Paul F. Born who installed one in a classroom in Elgin, Ill., in 1937.
Whiteboards became commercially available in the early 1960s, but did not become widely used until 30 years later. Early whiteboards needed to be wiped with a damp cloth and markers had a tendency to leave marks behind, even after the board was erased.
In 1974, whiteboards were proposed as additional equipment for Soviet schools.
Dry-erase markers for whiteboards were invented in 1975.
Whiteboards began being commonly used by businesses in the early 1990s. They became more common in classrooms during the 1990s due to concerns over health problems in children with dust allergies and the potential for chalk dust to damage computers. By the late 1990s, about 21 % of American classrooms had converted from chalkboards to whiteboards.

Re: White board Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning Trissie and thank you for starting us off. We had traditional blackboards at school, some attached to the wall, and some of the "roller" type. We also had a "blackboard monitor" who had the job of taking the taking the board rubber outside to give it a good bang against a wall to clean it. I don't think I encountered a white board until university!
Yesterday I made good use of my time while DH was at choral society yesterday evening. I promised myself I would do 15 minutes, and would then give myself permission to stop, and at about 8 minutes in was really lagging, but I told myself I was over half way through the time, and it was just 7 minutes more. That seems to give me some enthusiasm, and in the end I ended up doing an hour.
Lots has been shredded, and I have a small pile to file. The letter rack has also been cleaned out (it's amazing how much dust accumulates!) The .ext session I have (next week?) I need to file and then start going through the box files again, checking everything is still relevant, declutering and organising the rest.
My other big achievement yesterday evening was to finally book the caterers for parish Christmas lunch. I'd been stressing out over this phone call, as there was so much information I needed to give (numbers, dietary requirements, who to send the invoice to and their email address etc). But then I realised their website has a "contact us " page, where there is plenty of space to write my message, check it through and send it! So that's finally done. And I've already had an email confirmation this morning!
Today DH goes to the office. I'm at home, and I think it's still raining. Top priorities today if we have a wet day - clean the kitchen, bag up donations for charity bank (I'll walk them over when the rain does stop!), put DH's "stuff" that he left in the garage but really needs to be up here in his cupboard, and maybe clean out and declutter those last two under bed drawers? DH is out again tonight, so that gives me some extra time. I need to be more ruthless with the decluttering, as I want an ordered house before he retires (still no date, and if it's before Christmas then I almost certainly won't have finished the entire house, but all progress is good!)

Re: White board Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning, L.Ann! So glad Little Bit is looking forward to school. I'm sure you'll make the most of the extra "free time".
We've had torrential rain this morning,
which gave me a good opportunity to run the hoover round upstairs and "home" all the "stuff" into DH's cupboard. It really needs all sorting through properly, but that's a job maybe for Saturday when he's out all day (if it rains!) but I won't say anything to him, so he probably won't notice!
There's now a short reprieve with warm sun and blue skies. So I've rushed outside to take Fred out , take the rubbish down to the bins, and to do some deadheading and tidying in my garden. I'm currently sitting on my patio, which in the sun has dried out nicely, but I can see dark clouds gathering in in the west again, so I think the reprieve will be short lived. DH has just texted to say he will be in this evening after all, so I don't think I'm going to get the drawer under the bed done today. Most important will be to get the kitchen done by a reasonable hour.
I've also had a WhatsApp from the butcher to say they are retiring mid November (or possibly earlier!
) so do I want to place a Christmas order ? So, I've ordered our usual hamper and some of those sausages rolls DH likes, to be delivered on 5th November (or earlier, if they sell the shop before then!). So we've got 9(?) weeks to eat enough from the freezer to fit it all in! I'll be sorry to see them go, but it's time for K to hang up his butcher's apron while he's still able to enjoy retirement.
And I've just felt a few spots of rain ,.so time to retreat indoors!

Email HT, MD, BA and D to let them know the carers are booked. Should we put a "Save the Date" notice in the weekly news-sheet? And say more details to be released later on ? (I don't want people to get confused between the Christmas lunch and the Harvest bring and share supper, which will be held in October!)

Re: White board Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
WTG, kittykatt, on allthe shredding and filing yesterday! That is taming the paper tiger indeed!
Trissie, Thanks for the start and infomration on white boards. There is now paint, at least I ahve seen it advertised - not used it- that can make a wall into a white board. We had blackboards when I was growing up. It was an honor to stay after school and help the teacher with erasing. We would take the erasers outside and clap them together to release some of the chalk dust. Then the janitor would come with a special cloth to wash the boards clean, and the new day would start with a fresh black the next morning.
L.ann, you'll have to tell us abotu her first day at school when she comes home. It's a big day for her!
I left my phone at mother's NH last night. I set it down when I picked her laundry basket up off the floor, to take the clothes home to be washed. I'll start my day with 2 lol - lights and darks.
Dsis2 birthday is next wee. I have a couple things to wrap, then mail, for her. Mom has already signed the card. That is highest priority for today, because they have to go 2,000 miles.

Re: White board Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
Morning all. Kittykat it seems you have been getting a lot of rain lately.
Lann how exciting for little bit. All day school. She's 4 right? Must be a preschool? I don't think she's kindergarten yet?
Hmmm did we switch to whiteboard when we went up to high school? It wasn't long after I went to high school they built the new elementary school and I bet that got whiteboard. Memories. 1991 grad is a long time ago.
I am confused a bit with ds schedule. I thought pe was needed in grade 10 yet? This semester is wood and English and math and career. Next should be science socials German and metal .... my young now grade 12 coworker says the girls decided it was their turn for all girls basketball class or he would have done basketball. I will have to confirm that is ok.
Hmmm. What to do today? I woke up way too early again. Casper was not in my good books yesterday. I think I threw off the schedule. Got home at 5 ish from the hair appointment. Sat for a bit and started supper. It was so smokey yesterday. I got Casper in and made him wait till after supper for walk. Oops. He was being annoying so he went back out. Supper was on normal 730 time but by the time we were done it was 8 and the smoke made it dark almost. He thought we were going for a walk. I had to fight to get him to his rope. At one point he bolted the wrong way and jarred me when he hit the end of the leash. My neck snapped. Now it's tender but I wonder if it snapped the right way. Between that and the digging potatoes my body is rather displeased. And the truck was late at lunch time Tuesday again. Almost guaranteed I'm going to still have freight Thursday. I don't think I will attempt anything too strenuous. Laundry. Cleaning. Maybe I should rearrange a bit make space for herbs and peppers and tomato plants inside. We'll see.
Today's tada list
Shower
S&s both baths and reboot laundry
Take sheets off my bed for wash and start
Tidy laundry room and make space for the canner pot
Empty and reload dw
Finish tidying kitchen
School run

Re: White board Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
gma, I remember how we had chalkboard washing duties (and also student record book carrying duty - each week, one person was in charge of carrying the big record book from one classroom to the next, so that teachers could note who was missing and what was that day's topic). Not anymore!
kittykatt, I totally don't think about Christmas orders yet! But I get a fresh turkey and I pick it up the last possible moment so it's their cold storage that's stuffed, not mine.
how old is LilBit, L.Ann? She was born, like, a couple weeks ago and now she's going to school?
getting the schedules sorted out is September's biggest challenge for school-aged families, lauralind!
Home from work. I'd love to have an afternoon off and sit in the garden enjoying the nice weather, but that's not happening. Though I probably could have my coffee there later, if I cut my after-work destressing break short now!
TaDas
- morning madness
- work - a pretty good day
- pick up book order
- quickie trip to Tesco on the way home (finally I go by a small Tesco every day! Over summer, the road was closed and I had to change the entire commute schedule and there was not a single store that I would go buy, like, not one - no grocery, no drugstore, no bookstore, no nothing!)
- pick up DBD from school
ToDos
- morning routine
- clean kitchen
- put away yesterday's ironed laundry
