The tattlers are the two very similar bird species in the shorebird genus Tringa. They formerly had their own genus, Heteroscelus. The old genus name means "different leg" in Greek, referring to the leg scales that differentiate the tattlers from their close relatives, the shanks.

The species are:
Grey-tailed tattler, Tringa brevipes (formerly Heteroscelus brevipes)
Wandering tattler, Tringa incana (formerly Heteroscelus incanus)

Tattlers resemble a common redshank (T. totanus) in shape and size, but not in color. Their upper parts, underwings, face and neck are greyish, and the belly and the weak supercilium are white, with some greyish streaking on the underside in breeding plumage. They have short yellowish legs and a bill with a pale base and dark tip.

Certain identification to species depends on details like the length of the nasal groove and scaling on the tarsus. Birds in breeding plumage can also (with some experience) be identified by the underside pattern: the grey-tailed tattler has fine barring on throat, breast and flanks only, which appear light grey from a distance; the rest of the underside is pure white. The wandering tattler has a coarser barring, still visible from quite far away, all the way from the throat to the undertail coverts. In non-breeding plumage, observers with much experience will note that the wandering tattler is an overall darker bird with very weak supercilia, whereas the grey-tailed tattler is lighter – particularly on the face, due to their stronger supercilia. Their normal calls also differ strongly; the grey-tailed tattler has a disyllabic whistle, whereas the wandering tattler has a rippling trill. But when they flee from the observer or are otherwise startled or excited, both species alike give a variety of longer or shorter alarm calls.

Tattlers are strongly migratory and winter in the tropics and subtropics on muddy and sandy coasts. These are not particularly gregarious birds and are seldom seen in large flocks except at roosts. These birds forage on the ground or water, picking up food by sight. They eat insects, crustaceans and other invertebrates.

Their breeding habitat is stony riverbeds. They nest on the ground, but these waders will perch in trees and sometimes use old nests of other birds.

Good morning, Trissie, and thank you for another ornithological start! I hope people are working are less incompetent today!

Sleep well, Dogged! I think your country roll is similar to our "collar" bacon?

I hope L.Ann is enjoying the beach.

Helia, your class sound likely and enthusiastic. I'm sure you're the perfect teacher for them.

Laura,.I'm glad you're enjoying band. I'm sorry you're having so much pain ATM. Do you have physio exercises for you neck/shoulder? I know they're not an instant fix, but over time they can be helpful.

Bama, summer seems to be trying to hold on here,. although the temperature has dropped. Dnextdoorneighbour C 's Virginia creeper has turned the most brilliant shade of red, but the rest of the trees still have a full canopy of green leaves.

I had a productive day yesterday, and got a lot done outside in the sunshine, and indoors upstairs is now clean and tidy. Matilda seems to be improving, but she's still a bit picky with her eating.

Today I'm hoping for a rinse and repeat of yesterday , but substituting downstairs for upstairs!

Good morning, Gma, (or is it good night! )

It's been rather a "bitty" morning. But Freddie insisted on some extended lap time (and who am I to argue! ), I e had a chat with Dneighbour R, a long chat with Dneighbour SJ, and helped Dnextdoorneighbour C find her keys. Oh, and I've pruned another rose and do e a little deadheading. I'm hoping I can pot some pansies before lunch. DH wants to eat our main.meal at lunchtime on Tuesdays, as he has an early evening start for his choral society. He has also offered to cook, :D so, ... I'm easy.

☀️Good morning!
I’m up but not really attem yet. Going to piddle and read a bit. I ventured onto X and that is not a good way to start the day for anyone. I might watch a Brenda Gantt video for balance. Shes a sweet Christian lady that cooks old timey recipes, for anyone not familiar with her. I need to read the Bible first though.

Trissie, thanks for the start. Sounds like something from west side story, the tattlers and the shanks lol. I hope everyone today is competent at a minimum, preferably helpful and contributing to a good, productive day.

Kittykatt, hope Matilda gets her appetite back today. It’s very nice of you to let dh cook. We don’t get much of a fall, right now it’s still hot but the leaves are falling, so it was weird to be mowing green grass while mulching leaves on the ground. We don’t get much fall color either, we go green to brown on most trees, no vivid reds to oranges to yellows here.

Dogged, I grew up basic meat and potatoes so there may be a version of a cottage roll here and I’d never know it. I wonder if canned ham is similar? We do have that but I haven’t eaten it.
♥ Wake each day expecting good things to happen! ♥

Never heard of a tattler before, trissie, so I had to look it up. They remind me of sandpipers.
Kitty, that's nice you don't have to cook dinner tonight!
See you soon, Doggedly.
You too, Gma.
Lauralind, I read that you were in a band now, but I was a little confused. Is it a community band? What do you play?
Good morning Bama! The Bible sounds like a better start to the day than X. I'm not on X - or really much social media. This is my main one. LOL! I'm on FB but I don't go there very often. I also have an instagram account but never go there.

Speaking of birds, I heard an Eastern screech owl calling last night as I went to bed. That made me happy! I think it was a "this is my territory" call.

I have SO MUCH to do today. I can feel the overwhelm at the edges of my heart, but I will try to keep it at bay. I will try to prioritize tasks; all may not get done and I'm going to say that is OK. The ideal plan is to have the car packed and ready when I leave for work tomorrow morning and start driving immediately after work. That way I can avoid Chicago rush hour traffic AND driving in the dark.

General categories of TODOs:
1. Funeral services - still to coordinate: flowers, write my talk, can I add to the snacks?
2. Funeral Services - slideshow -- this has it's own line as it's a bigger task and it needs to be done before I leave town bc I won't have a scanner in IL (for old photos)
3. Food while in IL - family meal on Friday after the service (bc dd29 is celiac, restaurants are not an option - even those with GF items are not an option as she's been cross-contaminated too many times) + daily food; I can go to a grocery store on Thursday but also want healthy snacks in the car tomorrow -- and of course I'm low on some items now
4. Payroll: sub plans + midterm test made + practice test
5. laundry
6. PACKING and loading the car
7. Taxes
8. S2KJ get together - 2 hours? 1-3 pm
9. JOG

Dh has my car today to change the oil. (I ask him to do it because the mechanics don't bug him for extra services like they bug me. . . ) He wants to get our tax paperwork together tonight to send off to the CPA. Egads! Another thing to do. . . I'm in charge of the charitable giving reports. No Tuesday dinner, though, thank goodness. The S2KJ get together is happening this afternoon. I may/ may not stop by -- I'm going to see how I'm doing then.
