Post by Kittykatt »

The Maine Coon is a large and social domesticated cat breed, referred to as "the gentle giant". One of the oldest natural breeds in North America, the breed originated in the U.S. state of Maine, where it is the official state cat.

The Maine Coon is predominantly known for its size and dense coat of fur which helps it survive in the harsh climate of Maine. The Maine Coon is often cited as having "dog-like" characteristics.

It has a distinctive physical appearance and valuable hunting skills. The breed was popular in cat shows in the late 19th century, but its existence became threatened when long-haired breeds from overseas were introduced in the early 20th century. The Maine Coon has since made a comeback, and in 2025 the Maine Coon overtook the Ragdoll, becoming the most registered cat breed with the Cat Fanciers' Association.

Maine Coon cats are known to have originated in Maine. However, their lineage is surrounded by mystery, folk tales, and myths. One myth claims the Maine Coon cat is a hybrid with another animal species, such as the raccoon or bobcat. The second myth states the cats are descendants of Viking ship's cats, known today as the Norwegian Forest cats. A third story involves Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France who was executed in 1793. The story goes that before her death, Antoinette attempted to escape from France with the help of Captain Samuel Clough. She loaded Clough's ship with her most prized possessions, including six of her favorite Turkish Angora or possibly Siberian cats. Although she did not make it to the United States, all of her pets managed to reach the shore of Wiscasset, Maine, safely, where they bred with other short-haired breeds and developed into the modern breed of the Maine Coon.

These myths and theories have long speculated that the long-haired Maine Coon cat has to be related to other long-haired breeds, due to their similarities in phenotype. However, studies showed that the Maine Coon belongs to the Western European cat branch, but forms the closest relationship with the random-bred cat population in the Northeastern US (New York region). This Western European branch contains the Norwegian and Siberian Forest cat, but they fall under a different sub-branch.

Maine Coons are actually descendants of cats brought to New England by Puritan settlers in the 1600–1700s, and out of the European cats they are genetically closest to cats found in the United Kingdom. It is not relatedness that makes them look similar to the Norwegian and Siberian Forest cats, but convergent evolution. These breeds all formed in harsh climates, in which natural selection pressures for similar qualities. Thick, long coats, toe and ear tufts, big bodies, and snowshoe-like big feet, are useful traits in all the harsh climates where these breeds originate.

Good morning, everyone, and happy Monday!

Today is my one free day this week, and it's also supposed to be sunny, so I'm hoping to spend some time outside and make the most of the sunshine. I also need to ensure I've written everything down that needs to happen this week, so nothing gets forgotten! And I also need to ensure I don't get sidetracked down fascinating internet rabbit holes!

Good morning!

kitty ~ I just love Maine Coons! If I ever get another kitty, that would be my choice.
L.Ann ~ busy morning as usual!
trissie ~ owners don't bite, but spiders do. I say oust the little suckers!

re: savoy cabbage - not common here, but I love them. When I find them, I buy several.

I'm going to have to get in here on the weekends. You guys are having too much fun without me!

Weekend was busy.
Helped G with putting some stuff in the Storage Unit garage sale on Saturday.
We did the final townhouse walkthrough on Sunday along with having Li'l H.
Today - closing on the townhouse. Thinking of dubbing it Blair Hill Haven after the street it's on. :D

For once in a blue moon, I'm actually keeping up with my self-imposed schedule.
QT, physio, & TLC is done.
I AM going to the gym!

Getting here very late; having a super slow morning - because I can! The sun is up and shining. Skies are clear! It's a beautiful chilly day, 35F at the moment.

Kitty, we looked into Maine coons at one point when we thought about getting another pet. A dog like cat (or two) seemed perfect! We weren't sure and didn't follow through -- and then we rented a room to M who, unfortunately, is allergic to cats.
I hope everything goes well with the closing, Smile! I'll see you at the gym in a bit. :D
I hope the doctor appt. for DD32 was simple and easy, L Ann. I'm very intrigued by the miniature cow activity this weekend.

The weekend was really a tad too scheduled and social for me, but not having payroll today made it very doable. And I really love all the people I socialized with. We hosted 2 couples (both families of leaders from ex-church, including the sr. pastor, very wounded by the way things went down there) for dinner Friday night. Saturday, we did some furniture shopping + attended CG1 late (6 - 9:45 pm). Then, there were social events all day Sunday, except between 12:15 and 3:30: church, out 9:50 - 12:15. We hosted CG2 here at 3:30-6. We're thankful that M pitches in and helps heat up frozen pizzas and bread for dinner. Dd27 brought a rotisserie chicken. CG2 friends were leaving just as the Cs and dd27 were arriving, and then it was dinner for 7 people until 8:05 - followed almost immediately by a family zoom call 8:15 - 9:30. And then, I was ready to be silent and not talk to anyone. LOL! It was great to see baby I on the zoom call. She has gained over a pound already! Born at 6 lbs. 1 oz, she is now up to 7 lbs. 2 ounces. :) She is eating well. She looks nothing like our family. LOL!

Ooh a cat theme kittykatt, interesting.

LAnn, you’re jumping right back into routines post surgery. Have you been released to do all you normally do?

Smile, yay on closing! I get nervous signing legal documents but it’s the next step to your goal so hope there are no butterflies in your tummy.

Helia, babies change so quickly I’m sure there’s some helia waiting to pop out at the best time.

It’s a Monday morning here. I can’t believe Thanksgiving is next week. I need to put some giddy up in my hitch, or whatever the saying is.
