Stay safe Laura. So, is your mom in a hospital? What kind of diagnosis has her hospitalized? No hospital near where I live admits people because family can't manage anymore. Will she be going to adult day activity center, then sleep at home, and need transportation every day? Or is the plan for full nursing home where she will eat, sleep, etc. and they get her up, dressed, and to activities? That's where you get to personalize her room. Does she qualify for hospice help?

We're having such wind here, with some snow, it's a blinding blizzard in the country, even though not much snow is coming down - I think we've had less than 2 inches, but wind is 40+ mph- My son sent me a text that he is safe at a gas station about an hour away. He was coming home from a week of orientation for his new job, stopped at our cabin, and was able to get halfway. I'll bet he finds others to visit with. Wind is expected for 3 more hours. Even in town it's howling.

I'm finally home after a busy day and much time at mother's, wrapping packages.
Now I am unloading my dw, and planning to work to clear off the counters in preparation for baking on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Friday plans
Go to dfBS house to pick up the equipment she was to use for an overnight test, then return it to the clinic. Smae city as Mom's NH so
Go to the NH where mother stayed to bring gifts to 5 people and a small box of candy to the PT department. And I will walk past mother's room to see who is in it now. And I will not interact with the nursing staff that were so neglectful during mother's last month there - after 2 years of providing decent care.
A few small gifts to deliver locally
Have supper with MrVKM I don't think I have seen him since Mother died, tho we have talked. My life has just been too full of other necessary things.

Gma it is the hospital atm. Under long term care designation. We have very limited resources up here. There are several in our hospital because they are not safe at home anymore. The nursing home has at least a year long waiting list. Is hospice an American thing? Maybe it's here too called something else. We have home care but not enough staff and they couldn't come exactly when dad wanted so that fell apart.

She should find her space in the nursing home within a few months I would like to think. I wish there was more available but I have to be grateful for what is there.

I don't remember where you live. I believe your system is very different from ours. I am grateful that there is hospital care available for her while waiting for nursing home. I don't think that would happen in US. Or it would certainly speed up the process, but here does require an acute diagnosis to be in the hospital. Some doctors are more creative than others at making it hppen.
Elder care is probably a concern world wide, as not enough people to provide it, and expense for people who need it is prohibitive for most, without substantial government assistance. We were fortunate that mother had the financial resources, but it left her retirement funds that she had hoped to generously divide among her children to be very small inheritance indeed. We are happy that the funds were there for her care, as it was not something that I could do alone, and everyone else was >1,000 miles away.
Hospice is for care as the person is declining, and will not be seeking curative care. It provides comfort cares, and varies how much care is provided. I believe it started in the United Kingdom and came to the US in the early 80s, maybe late 70s. Substantial focus is on pain control, other symptom control, but not cure.
