Figure skating is the oldest sport at the Olympic Winter Games, but made its Olympic debut at the summer edition of the Games at London 1908 and again in Antwerp in 1920. Since 1972, there have been events in men’s and women’s singles and a pairs competition. Ice dance was added in 1976. There have been events in men's singles, women’s singles, and pairs skating at every edition of the Olympic Winter Games. Ice dance was added in 1976, with a team competition introduced at Sochi 2014.

Figure skating is divided into five disciplines: men's and women's singles, pairs and ice dance, and the team competition.
There are two events in the men's, women's, and pairs competitions: a short program with mandatory technical elements, and a free program with mandatory technical elements but more freedom in the execution.
Both programs are set to music chosen by the skaters themselves.
Athletes in the pairs competition must perform a few technical movements together, such as jumps and parallel spins, trying to be as synchronized as possible. The difference between the pair and dance disciplines is that the latter does not include technical elements such as jumps or overhead lifts.
In ice dance competitions, skaters perform both a rhythm dance and a free dance. The music genre for the short program is chosen each year by the International Skating Union (ISU).
The scores for each event are decided by a panel of two technical specialists and a technical controller, which determines the level of execution of the technical element performed by the skater. The quality of execution and other artistic elements, such as interpretation, are decided by a panel of nine judges.
The sum of the scores determines the winner at the end of the two rounds.
The team competition consists of a qualifying phase and a final phase, divided into the traditional skating programs: the short program and the free skate.
During the qualifying phase, a male athlete, dance team, pair, and female athlete present their short programs to earn the highest score for their team. This event takes place before the Opening Ceremony and involves the top 10 nations in the world based on the seasonal ranking.

Happy Friday!
The thing making me the happiest today is that I do NOT have to go to the office! And also that tomorrow is the weekend!
And I love figure skating! To watch, that is, I am afraid of actually being on ice I remember watching figure skating competitions on the black and white TV as a kid and the commenters used to describe the costumes of the figure skaters and I was imagining how bright and sparkly they were!

Figure skating is such a beautiful sport, requires so much strength, skill, balance, and one of my favorites to watch. When I got to see it in person, I was aware that TV was good at showing close ups of the costumes, and the jumps, but in reality, seeing the enormity of the rink was amazing! And now we can see it in sparking color!

It's 1255 am here. I have just completed washing ALL the dishes, plus the counters, after baking 3 loaves of rye bread, and what turned out to be 4 large cardamon braids. I managed to make a really big mess in my little kitchen! The DW is running. I have to figure out how I am going to prevent the long braids from drying out - I do not have a plastic bag long enough. Tomorrow I can go to our Co-op and get some of their plastic vegetable bags, they should be long enough. For overnight until then? Maybe the old fashioned way of cover with a dishtowel. Now I have to figure out how I will carry the bread on the airplane. I have a good cloth shopping bag that should work.
Dogged, did your db proof the yeast? Or does he use a bread machine, which doesn't require proofing. I've kept active dry yeast in my refrigerator for over a year and not had it go bad. I am generous with it - I use about 1 TBSP for every 4-5 cups of flour. (I buy the jars, not the packets!)

I really should start doing something with my suitcase before I go to bed. Leaving it all for tomorrow seems too last minute. But is sure feels good to sit down at the computer! I have been standing, kneading, cleaning much of the day.
OK, time to get out of the chair and find the suitcase, and at least get kind of started on it. Ihave the list of what might be good to put in it. I'll see how it all fits - don't wnat to take a big suitcase.

Good morning Trissie and thank you for starting us off. I grew up in a town with a public ice rink, so I used to go often with a group of friends. I wasn't very good, but being young I didn't care, and also being young I wasn't afraid of falling. When I lived to my current city - no ice rink. They have started having a temporary I e during the Christmas period, but after so many years without any practice, I'm now terrified of falling. Also, it's outside, without any facilities, and I wouldn't want to kiss the ritual hot chocolate we always had afterwards to warm up!

So glad you can WFH again today, and avoid at least some of the nonsense in the office.

Dogged, I hope you feel better today. I e heard varying reports about whether to take both vaccines together or not. Ive had both together in the past, with no reaction, but it wasn't the senior dose, and that could make all the difference. OTOH, it does get everything over and done with.

Bama , that sounds very cold! I do t take Freddie out if it's much below freezing, as I can't see him wearing a coat, and if the roads or pavements have been gritted then I'd have to wash his paws when we got back inside , which I can't see me surviving unscathed. There are booties available which protect animals' paws, but I really can't see me getting them.on Freddie (let alone off again!) without bloodshed!

Gma, I'm glad you're now able to get more things done for you. Your house must smell amazing with two different types of bread!

It's raining again today. But at least it's constant rain (rather than showers) so I know I have to plan a mostly indoor day today. I have the osteopath this afternoon, but that leaves the whole morning to do indoor jobs. Maybe some more work on the kitchen? And I really do need to tackle the Girls' nails!

Thanks for the start trissie. Good thing you can stay home, I hope you can work serenely. You mentioned the other day that some of my payroll tasks could be done remotely, and of course you're right, I coukd easily wfh one or 2 days a week... but no. We just don't do remote. One of the reasons I'll be happy to switch jobs, although there are so many readons it's hard to say how high this one ranks.

Gma so much baking... involves certainly a lot of cleaning ! Wishing you a good trip if I don't 'see' you till then.

Kittykatt, we're weather twins again. Definitely an indoors day !

Raind and wind. I like Fridays, payroll is 7 hours instead of 8 (add 1 hour lunch break and twice 30 minutes of commute). It's been a busy week but most of the accounting stuff fir the yearly closing is going well. Next there will be fiscal considerations, which is harder - at least I'm going to learn things, good for my résumé...

Good morning, FFB! I'm glad at least some things are going smoothly at work for you. We've just had a hail storm, so Freddie is definitely not going out for a walk today! I'm up and dressed, I've had a long chat with DH -he wanted to discuss the technical merits of the new washing machine - (as far as I'm concerned it washes clothes nicely, it has a wool cycle for the jumpers and other wool items, and it doesn't sound like a jet engine when it spins, so I'm good!) and everyone has been fed, so it's time for me to get moving with the housework. If there's no one sleeping on the sitting room carpet I'd like to get that hoovered first!

Taking a short break while DH makes cheese on toast for lunch.

I've cut Jude's and Matilda's nails, given them both a good brush (especially Jude, as her coat is very thick) , done their flea control and Jude's laxapet. Jude has started to change her coat, so I think we may be having an early spring.

I've also cleaned out and decluttered 3 more kitchen cupboards. I've out back everything that we use, and there's now a pile in the hall for donations, and a smaller one for rubbish. I'm going to have to re-jig several of the cupboards when the cupboard and drawer project by the washing machine is finished, but that's ok, as I'll just be moving stuff that we need and use, and not trying to tackle all the cupboards at once!

After lunch I need to change into something smarter, ready for my osteopath appointment. My neck is definitely complaining after all the crawling into cupboards this week!
