Re: Mole Monday
Moles are small, subterranean mammals. They have cylindrical bodies, velvety fur, very small, inconspicuous eyes and ears, reduced hindlimbs, and short, powerful forelimbs with large paws adapted for digging.
The word "mole" most commonly refers to many species in the family Talpidae (which are named after the Latin word for mole, talpa). True moles are found in most parts of North America, Europe (except for Ireland and Asia. Other mammals referred to as moles include the African golden moles and the Australian marsupial moles, which have a similar ecology and lifestyle to true moles but are unrelated.
Moles provide positive contributions to soil, gardens, and ecosystems, including soil aeration, feeding on slugs and small creatures that eat plant roots, and providing prey for other wildlife. They eat earthworms and other small invertebrates in the soil. The mole's velvety coat helps it to move easily through the soil, and its mouth and nose are protected from debris by their down-facing position.
Moles have been found to tolerate higher levels of carbon dioxide than other mammals, because their blood cells have a special form of hemoglobin that has a higher affinity to oxygen than other forms. In addition, moles use oxygen more effectively by reusing the exhaled air, and can survive in low-oxygen environments, such as burrows.
A mole can dig up to 20 metres of tunnel in a day using its spade-like forepaws to effectively breaststroke its way through the soil. Every now and again, loose soil is pushed up to the surface, resulting in what we see as a mole hill.

Re: Mole Monday
Good morning, everyone and happy Monday!
Welcome back, Gma! I'm glad you had a lovely holiday.
So, Monday again. DH goes to the office, I'm at home and, as far as I can tell it isn't raining yet! It's a relatively mild 6 C / 48 F start to today, so I'm not sure why the Met office issued an ice warning for our area this morning!!!!

Re: Mole Monday
Today is cloudy and overcast, but still dry so far. I've taken Freddie for his walk, and it's not too soggy underfoot. So, I'm going to attempt some time in my garden, and then a walk.
I've also had a long text conversation with MJ this morning. Apparently the doors he ordered haven't arrived yet. I haven't paid anything up front, so I'm not too worried. At least it gives me more time to declutter the kitchen.

Re: Mole Monday
Welcome back to the frozen tundra, Gma!
Glad you can get some time outdoors, Kitty.
It is very gray this morning, so still semi-dark outside, and 10*F. It has just started to lightly snow. We're forecast to get into the 20s this afternoon -- again! Yay! I've heard one birdsong, which is always cheering! Yesterday, 4 deer visited our property. I think it's the mom who had 3 babies last summer but I can't be sure; 3 looked slightly smaller. It's amazing these critters survive the cold.
Today: I need to get some groceries and exercise at the gym. This afternoon, I have a training/review meeting for English Placement Testing (EPTs) 2:30 - 3:30. I was trained and did this for a short time when CM had her first baby 2 years ago. Then, I'm giving the exit test 4-5 on zoom. I've edited one exam and gotten an OK on another. I still need to hear back re: the third.
I heard back from friend EP. I'm going to have dinner with her and her son on Wednesday! I'll invite them over here and host them, unless they'd prefer a restaurant meet up.
Next:
- reclaim kitchen

Re: Mole Monday
Just for the day, here's the most beloved mole of them all!

The Little Mole (Czech: Krtek, Krteček) is a series of cartoons as well as the name of their title character, an anthropomorphic mole, created by Czech animator Zdeněk Miler between 1957 and 2002. The first short film premiered at the 1957 Venice Film Festival, where it won the award for the best directing achievement.
All my kids adored him - well, I adored him and so did my mother.
The beast ruining my lawn? Yeah, not so much!

Re: Mole Monday
kittykatt, do you have moles in your garden?
welcome home, gma! looks like trip was a success!
L.Ann, is the delayed start due to weather?
helia, you asked yesterday, the broth was for freezing. We never eat a whole roasted chicken so I usually debone it, add some veggies and make some broth to use either as base for soup or just for cooking later!
Gotta take DBD to her speech therapy apt, BBL!
