Marco Polo (c. 1254 – 8 January 1324)[1] was a Venetian merchant, explorer, and writer who travelled through Asia along the Silk Road between 1271 and 1295.His travels are recorded in The Travels of Marco Polo (also known as Book of the Marvels of the World and Il Milione, c. 1300), a book that described the then-mysterious culture and inner workings of the Eastern world, including the wealth and great size of the Mongol Empire and China under the Yuan dynasty, giving Europeans their first comprehensive look into China, Persia, India, Japan, and other Asian societies.

Born in Venice, Marco learned the mercantile trade from his father and his uncle, Niccolò and Maffeo, who travelled through Asia and met Kublai Khan. In 1269, they returned to Venice to meet Marco for the first time. The three of them embarked on an epic journey to Asia, exploring many places along the Silk Road until they reached "Cathay". They were received by the royal court of Kublai Khan, who was impressed by Marco's intelligence and humility. Marco was appointed to serve as Kublai's foreign emissary, and he was sent on many diplomatic missions throughout the empire and Southeast Asia, visiting present-day Myanmar, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. As part of this appointment, Marco also travelled extensively inside China, living in the emperor's lands for 17 years and seeing many things previously unknown to Europeans.

Around 1291, the Polos offered to accompany the Mongol princess Kököchin to Persia; they arrived there around 1293. After leaving the princess, they travelled overland to Constantinople and then to Venice, returning home after 24 years. At this time, Venice was at war with Genoa. Marco joined the war effort on behalf of Venice and was captured by the Genoans. While imprisoned, he dictated stories of his travels to Rustichello da Pisa, a cellmate. He was released in 1299, became a wealthy merchant, married, and had three children. He died in 1324 and was buried in the church of San Lorenzo in Venice.

Though he was not the first European to reach China, Marco Polo was the first to leave a detailed chronicle of his experience. His account provided the Europeans with a clear picture of the East's geography and ethnic customs, and it included the first Western record of porcelain, gunpowder, paper money, and some Asian plants and exotic animals. His narrative inspired Christopher Columbus and many other travellers. There is substantial literature based on Polo's writings; he also influenced European cartography, leading to the introduction of the Catalan Atlas and the Fra Mauro map.

Marco Polo's famous alleged last words, spoken on his deathbed when urged to retract unbelievable tales from his book, were: "I have not told half of what I saw" (or "I did not tell half of what I saw, for I knew I would not be believed").

Good morning, everyone, and happy Monday!

Today DH goes to the office (I shan't be saying that for much longer! The latest intelligence he has had suggests he'll leave at the end of June.) Anyway, it's been a much more cheerful start to Monday. :D

I need to do housework today, and have an appointment this afternoon. And the forecast is once again for rain .

Good morning, Kittykatt. Thank you for this adventurous start to our day. :) Hooray for a cheerful start to your day.

I am up shamefully late, playing a computer game. I'll clean up after Germane, offer her a treat if she has eaten her food, and head to bed. See you later.

Good morning Kittykatt! Thanks for yet another start - I see we moved on from philosophers:)
June is around the corner. It will be a big change for both of you. Does DH have hobbies ?
Dogged I hope you get your sleep... That was REALLY late.

I was out ALL day yesterday - that's my excuse for not showing up. But, the plan is to get WHB done today. And, I'm looking forward to that.
Our weather has been mild, although cloudy today. Dpup had 3 (!) walks yesterday.

Will start with MR

We're starting off today with some sunshine, kitkat. Will dpup get several walks today as well? Enjoy the mild weather! We're having it too. So nice!
See you soon Doggedly! Sleep well.
Thanks for the explorer start, Kitty. I'd heard of Marco Polo but didn't know the details.

Last night, we were 6 - and then 5 for Sunday dinner. Dd30 left early because of work and classwork (she's starting an MA program at UMich while working full time). Dh is in SF, and R is still recovering from pneumonia. It was fun to have an all girls dinner! Then, we had a smaller than usual family zoom call; I thought we might cancel but ds really seemed to want to do it. Dh was out and dd30 said she couldn't join because of work - but she did join for a while - and F was asleep. We ended up chatting for a good hour or more -- until baby I woke up and ds had to go. :)

Today, the sun is shining, we have mild temps again - up to 53F - and I have nothing on my calendar other than a work phone call with the director at 11:10. However, there are things I need to do: exercise - outside of course, finish NY cards (still not done), payroll: prep for class tomorrow, clean sheets on bed, towel and sheet laundry, writing time, and procuring some groceries. Progress on other brain dump items would be good too.
