Willem Cornelisz Schouten (c. 1567 – 1625) was was born in Hoorn, Holland, Seventeen Provinces. He was a Dutch navigator for the Dutch East India Company, and was the first to sail the Cape Horn route to the Pacific Ocean.

In April 1601 Willem Schouten was skipper of the Duyfken in the 'Moluccan fleet' of Wolfert Hermansz, and participated in the Battle of Bantam.

On 1 July 1615 Willem Schouten and his younger brother Jan Schouten sailed from Texel in the Netherlands, in an expedition led by Jacob Le Maire and sponsored by Isaac Le Maire and his Australische Compagnie in equal shares with Schouten. The expedition consisted of two ships: Eendracht and Hoorn. A main purpose of the voyage was to search for Terra Australis. A further objective was to explore a western route to the Pacific Ocean to evade the trade restrictions of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the Spice Islands. In 1616 Schouten rounded Cape Horn, which he named after the recently destroyed ship Hoorn,[a] and the Dutch city of Hoorn, after which the lost ship was named, the town in which Schouten himself was born. Schouten named the strait itself Le Maire Strait. Willem Schouten's younger brother Jan Schouten died on 9 March 1616 after the expedition left Juan Fernández.[2] Willem Schouten crossed the Pacific along a southern role, encountering a number of atolls in the Tuamotu Islands, including Puka-Puka, Manihi, Rangiroa and Takapoto, followed by Tafahi, Niuafoʻou and Niuatoputapu in the Tonga Islands, and Alofi and Futuna in the Wallis and Futuna Islands.[2] He then followed the north coasts of New Ireland and New Guinea and visited adjacent islands, including what became known as the Schouten Islands before reaching Ternate in September 1616. Eendracht completed the navigation and returned to the Netherlands on 1 July 1617.

Although he had opened an unknown route (south of Cape Horn) for the Dutch, the VOC claimed infringement of its monopoly of trade to the Spice Islands. Schouten was arrested (and later released) and his ship confiscated in Java. On his return he would sail again for the VOC, and on one of these trips he died off the coast of Madagascar in 1625.

◕‿◕ * * * Good Morning! * * * ◕‿◕

Kittykatt, thanks for the start. So many islands in the Pacific atolls I couldn't locate on a map !

Another grey morning. We're supposed to pack and leave, drive 8 hours, we sleep near Lyons tonight, visit (notDear)InLaws tomorrow for lunch, and on monday we drive to a tiny and low-altitude ski resort hoping there will be enough snow to enjoy some ski. Back on Friday night or Saturday night (depending if we rent one extra night to ski an extra day).
Many things to do, before actually putting things in the bags and in the car.

TADAs
dishwasher is mostly emptied
lists are scribbled here and there
the drying rack is almost empty
tea for MrNG and I
DS7 is up and DS10 is yelling at him from his bed

TODO
start packing my stuff, then food and toiletries for all, then check the kids' packing
manage to leave the house clean
pick a grocery delivery on the way to the highroad
enjoy adventures

Good morning, FFB. I hope your visit to the in laws goes as smoothly as possible. At least it sou DS as though I'm it will be short! And then you'll all be able to enjoy your well earned holiday. :D

Dogged, I can imagine your winter scene - thank you for sharing the description!

KitKat, I am fortunate that bothe Jude and Freddie, despite being predominantly black, both have white nails, which makes it easier to see the quick. Matilda has tabby coloured nails, which makes it more challenging, but I wear my glasses and go cautiously. I also use the clippers that resemble.a.oair if scissors, which I find easier to use (not sure if they're suitable for dogs!).

Today is the ladies' breakfast at the community shop, so I need to be OTD by 8.45!

BBL - have a good day, everyone!

Well, I'm with you on the packing up and leaving, Frenchie! Only our drive is only two hours.
Have fun at the ladies' breakfast, kittykatt!

As mentioned above, it's packing time! We want to leave sometimes after lunch. The keys to the cottage will be at a lock box, so there's no stress to get there on time, and quite frankly, that's the way I like it! We only need to unpack and do one supply run once we get there anyway.

I hope you have a safe, uneventful drive and a lovely holiday, Trissie!

Back from the ladies breakfast. Very nice, and I now need to go out in the garden and burn off some calories! Fortunately, it's dry so far today, and the ☀️ is even trying to come out, so I'm going to postpone the housework and make the most of it. (The forecast was for drizzle, so not sore how long this nice spell will last today).

Good morning and thanks for yet another start, Kittykatt. (more reading/research in my future  )
Looks like your weather is nicer than ours...(all grey) Enjoy time in the garden
trissie enjoy your time away!
FFly Enjoy the trip. Make happy memories:)
LAnn - I did not get to reply yesterday:
I just finished The Stranger In The Lifeboat. I read Twice (his recent one) just after Christmas. There are similarities - both are very good. :)

I'm up - have a few accomplishments. Need to get some more.
As I got back to WHB plus some Zone, I noticed, I got behind with DC. So my objective is to keep that going even if just for :15...
I have a yoga class in a bit. It looks like we might be able to walk outside today: temp. is mild.

Next:
take meds/suppl.
take pup out in back once more
change into exercise clothes

start a lol
eat breakfast
