Re: Fat Hen Friday
Fat hen (Chenopodium albumis ) is a common plant that grows in gardens and arable fields, along roadside verges and hedgerows, and in many other habitats - it is so frequent, it is often considered to be a weed. Spikes of whitish flowers appear from June to October and the seeds are popular food for farmland birds such as Yellowhammer, Greenfinch and Linnet.
As a member of the spinach family, Fat Hen was a popular food in times past Before spinach was introduced to the UK it was commonly used as a green to go with meats. Fat Hen is very high in vitamin A, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus and is a good source of protein, trace minerals, B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, iron, and fibre. The seeds of Fat Hen have even been confirmed as part of the last meal of Tollund Man's last meal, who was found preserved in a Danish peat bog and dated from 400Bc.
Fat Hen acts as a mild diuretic, laxative, anti-inflammatory, and anthelmintic (expels worms). Leaves are used topically for sunstroke, bug bites, and rheumatic pain and to sooth burns, while tea or decoctions support digestion. It is also used in traditional medicine for treating urinary problems, and sometimes for treating scurvy due to its high Vitamin C content.

Re: Fat Hen Friday
Good morning, everyone, and happy Friday!
Helia, a wood fire on a cold evening sounds delightful!
WTG getting the insurance sorted out, L.Ann.
KitKat, I'm sure DGD enjoyed the teddy bears' tea party.
Bama, that notice sounds concerning, but good to know.
Dogged,.I shall be keeping Germane's.book well.away.from our gang!
I already have enough issues with Jude who will only eat dried food, unless she can steal some of Matilda's wet food (she knows better than to go near Freddie!
). If I give her some of the wet food from the exact same pouch on a plate of her own, it's met with a firm rejection.
Today, MJ is supposed to be coming this afternoon to finally finish the cupboard. So I need to get everything out of that well before he comes. I would also like to do something in my garden if it doesn't rain . We are forecast for
, but only 35%, so we may escape. If it rains.
I might do a little.to my dolls house, or some more sewing, or I could work on the photos .
SKIPPABLE RANT>
DH said I was boring last night and he wasn't interested in what I had to say (this is when I gently remonstrated with him when he walked off I to another room when I was talking to him, and I said it was very rude to just walk off when I was talking to him - something he's started doing a lot.). Well, to be completely . honest,.I'm often not interested in what he has to say either , (a list of pubs visited that I have never been to and almost certainly never will go to, is not,.for me ,the most fascinating topic of conversation!) but I always make the effort to give him my full attention when he's speaking to me ,.or wants to tell me something, no matter how "boring" it may be to me - it's obviously important to him. Of course I'll carry on doing this, as it's only right he should feel valued and respected. But maybe I won't tell him stuff, apart from the "need to know" things, obviously,.as he's made it clear he isnt interested in what I have to say, and it would save a lot of angst on my part.
I'm not expecting anyone to wave a magic wand and fix the situation,.but this is a safe space and I just wanted to get it off my chest so I can move on with life and not sit festering over it
</End of rant>

Re: Fat Hen Friday
Kittykatt, yes, this is a safe place, and sharing a rant with us helps release the build up of steam. WE value your conversation!
I've been sort of on again off again here - so much to do and going on.
Tonight was GOOD! A baroque "band" of 8 singers, 2 violins, a cello, stringed bass, a harp and small organ, did music from medieval times dedicated to the Virgin Mary. All in Latin, but with French pronunciation fo the Latin. The words were printed, both in Latin and English. The sound was AMAZING! I told the leader that I felt like I was transposed into a European cathedral in the middle ages! Or the drawing room of a Baron's castle. Although she was a couple hundred years earlier, I came home wanting to find literature by or about Hildegaard von Bingen. She was both a Christian mystic and a composer.
I spent some extra time with MrVKM over the weekend, and it was good.
We had 2 deaths in our congregation yesterday. One expected, and the other much earlier than expected.
The funeral for a cousin of my mother's is on Saturday, 2 hours away.
I sent sympathy cards for those 2 deaths from our congregation today, as I had been to Hallmark yesterday. Plus wrote sympathy cards for the funeral on Saturday, and for the funeral that was last Saturday. And did 3 more acknowledgment cards for Mother. And a card to a cousin 300 miles away with a new diagnosis of aggressive bladder cancer.
And sent one happy card, just because I liked the card and hope that it will bring a smile to the person who is getting it.
My list for Friday includes baking Cardamon Braid, to bring with to a lady whom I will visit after the funeral - an hour from the funeral, then 2 hours home. She used to live in my town, was a close friend then, and has moved to be close to her son, as she is experiencing significant heart issues. I guess Friday also needs to include filling the gas tank!
My dining room table continues to be clear. MrVKM is coming for supper tomorrow - our Food Co-op is doing some really yummy Walleye (fish) sandwiches on Fridays during Lent. I'll add a salad with chopped apples, shaved/grated fennel, some orange segments, and dressed with lemon yogurt. Does that sound good? Should I add anything to the yogurt besides lemon juice? And he likes Riesling, so we'll have a small glass of that. Or at least he will - I started getting a cold sore today, and I don't know if wine will aggravate it. We both like theatrical performances; our local paper promoted a local group that is doing Once Upon A Mattress Sunday afternoon, so I will ask him if he would like to go to that. It's based on The Princess and the Pea fairy tale.
I think it's bedtime here so I can get up in the morning and start my list, which I have written so I can start on it when I get up. I've done my bath, toenails, and lotion. My sheets are clean and so am I.
Good night!

Re: Fat Hen Friday
Sleep well, Gma! Thank you for the validation, and thanks you especially for sharing your experiences - you sound as though you're having a well deserved wonderful time.
MJ has just messaged to say he should be here around lunchtime / early afternoon to fit the shelf. He's also going to do something about stopping Matilda going into the space by the side of the washing machine and then squeezing into the unused back of the cupboard!!! Ive been ignoring this behaviour to try and discourage it, but that hasn't worked, so it's time for some action! As a temporary solution I've used the pole on my extending window cleaner to divide the space, so she can't get in, but we need something more permanent! (I'm concerned that if she was I well and went there to hide, we would have huge difficulty getting her out, hence why I need to stop her "fun" in there).
We currently have blue skies, so I'm hoping for some garden time before MJ appears.

Re: Fat Hen Friday
Happy Friday.! What an interesting plant - I'm not sure but I think it is the same as Lamb's Quarters, or at least kin to it. It certainly can do a lot, can't it? I think I like the name Fat Hen better! I feel suspicious as to why we are imagining a little lamb's leg... ..
Conversation is a respectful gift to give another person. Usually appreciated, but I guess sometimes the other person just isn't in the same "space" and receptive.
I'm having a funny middle of the night because the house feels uncomfortably dry. Another theory is that I am a dry person, lol. Have had some water and will try for some more sleep.
My day is going to be anchored by appt with the tax preparer. Possibly other errands while out, if they can be arranged. And lunch out.

Re: Fat Hen Friday
I'm very sorry dh said that to you, Kitty. Perhaps he will come round and apologize. I love Harriet's comment that conversation is a respectful gift we give to each other. And as Gma and others have said, we value your conversation here - and this is a safe space. We all have those moments when we need to share something.
Safe travels and I hope the appointment/s is/ are good, L Ann.
I hope you got back to sleep, Harriet. That's a good reminder about taxes.

Re: Fat Hen Friday
Good morning! Thanks for the start, Kittykatt - I never heard of Fat Hen... and its benefits.
A good rant might help you feel better - and no better place than here. Let me just say that since DH's retirement, it's often VERY quiet here...
Harriet hope you got more sleep.
LAnn is Hopkins for DD? Hope all goes well
Gma I love that you are getting some nice outings. Your salad plan sounds lovely! Mr VKM is lucky.
Date night is wonderful, helia
Friday again. I'll have the little one for sleepover tonight.
Will go to gym this morning and have pup walk in the early afternoon when it's warmer. (Right now, we have -10 C windchill. It's going up to 6C!)
In between there is the usual food prep/cleaning. Planning to improvise something with Portobello and Savoy Cabbage. It sounds good in my head
Pup is fed/out/in
I'm caffeinated,
bed made
Off to D2Ex plus MR
