Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892) was an English poet. He was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom during much of Queen Victoria's reign. In 1829 he was awarded the Chancellor's Gold Medal at Cambridge for one of his first pieces, "Timbuktu". He published his first solo collection of poems, Poems, Chiefly Lyrical, in 1830. "Claribel" and "Mariana", which remain some of Tennyson's most celebrated poems, were included in this volume. Although described by some critics as overly sentimental, his poems ultimately proved popular and brought Tennyson to the attention of well-known writers of the day, including Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Tennyson's early poetry, with its medievalism and powerful visual imagery, was a major influence on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

Tennyson also focused on short lyrics, such as "Break, Break, Break", "The Charge of the Light Brigade", "Tears, Idle Tears", and "Crossing the Bar". Much of his verse was based on classical mythological themes, such as "Ulysses" and "The Lotos-Eaters". "In Memoriam A.H.H." was written to commemorate his friend Arthur Hallam, a fellow poet and student at Trinity College, Cambridge, after he died of a stroke at the age of 22. Tennyson also wrote notable blank verse, including Idylls of the King, "Ulysses", and "Tithonus". During his career, Tennyson attempted drama, but his plays enjoyed little success.

A number of phrases from Tennyson's work have become commonplace in the English language, including "Nature, red in tooth and claw" ("In Memoriam A.H.H."), "'Tis better to have loved and lost / Than never to have loved at all", "Theirs not to reason why, / Theirs but to do and die", "My strength is as the strength of ten, / Because my heart is pure", "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield", "Knowledge comes, but Wisdom lingers", and "The old order changeth, yielding place to new". He is the ninth most frequently quoted writer in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.

Probably not one of his most "worthy" but one of my favourites - I love the imagery:

I know I read Tennyson in high school! Wordsworth too and probably others. I didn't like poetry in high school. I think I wasn't mature enough at the time. I enjoy it now. Thanks for the literary start, Kitty! I hope church this morning was pleasant. I don't see lunch on your list afterward so maybe you just came home to get ready for your appt. with Jude.

Yesterday was fairly productive for me. I was able to: go for a jog, go to Kroger, do 2 loads of clothes laundry, finish exam prep drafts for payroll - except for my own exam, charge my running watch and fitbit, make good progress on packing, and put a tasty and healthy meal on the table for dinner. I also washed out a veggie bin in the fridge after I found a liquified cucumber in it. 🤢 Funny, it didn't smell.

Today, I'm up and at 'em a little earlier. I'm mostly packed but can't pack toiletries until after I s2s, and I can't pack my backpack until after payroll. I need to do a few things to get the house ready like refill the bird feeder, freeze the shrimp pasta + sauce, and make more space for M's stuff in the fridge. She's returning this weekend while we're gone.

Next:
- some qt
- payroll: slides AR D7
- payroll: set up HW4
- payroll: print out Vocab Journals (can do at payroll too)
- payroll: add words to U8 Quizlet

Later:
- back exercises
- s2s and self care
- squeegee and wipe down shower
- pack toiletries
- make bed
- reclaim kitchen
- refill bird feeder
- pasta and sauce packaged and put in freezer
- make space in fridge
- darks: fold and p/a
- gather everything and otd by 10:45
- 11-1 payroll: teach AR D7
- lunch
- finish getting house ready
~ 2 pm leave for airport
- park, get through security and boarding
- fly SAFELY to Austin
- get car
- find bnb
- figure out dinner; it will be 9 pm (10 pm our body time) by the time we get to the bnb

TaDas!
- up; weighed self - moving down a little :)
- coffee
- email deletions + weather websites

WEEKLY ACTIVITIES
Thu 11-1 payroll: teach AR D7/ 2:15 leave for airport - fly to Austin, TX! 🤠

Good morning Kittykatt - thanks for the start (and a familiar name:) )
Sounds like you are busy...

helia I'd call that a productive day! Yay for the jog. (I'm here to cheer you on)
Have a safe flight and enjoy Texas.

I did not get back last night: DGD stayed - we went for a walk and an ice cream. After that I needed a hot bath...
Pup was tired: she voluntarily retired to her crate. ( DGD played games with her. )

Today:
I need to get an ECG done
Must print our tickets for a performance
I have a gym class
Garb/rec will go to curb tonight
I'm hoping to make some progress here...

Will start with the usual, MR.

Sounds like a nice evening with DGD, kitkat. Thanks for the encouragement! I couldn't make it all the way up the arb hill so that's a future jogging goal. I hope the ECG is easy and clear!!

I'm done prepping for payroll. And I need to be otd in 1 hour. I'm going to s2s next and then finish packing toiletries. I hope to have at least a short QT (devotional time).

Done:
- darks: folded and p/a
- kitchen reclaimed
- payroll: slides for AR D7
- payroll: set up HW
- payroll: printed out book vocab lists (1 S wants this)
- payroll: added vocab to quizlet

☀️Good morning!

Have fun out and about, kittykatt! I just realized you call it supper too, I usually see dinner being used and feel like the odd one out.

Helia, cheers to productivity and prayers for safe travels.

Kitkat, you must be the reason I had to have ice cream last night and the scale was up this morning. I’m picking up on your ice cream vibes.

Today started with a bang, 2 early phone calls, so I hit the ground running and actually have tadas this early. A friend of dh’s lost her mother this week, ordering flowers. Culligan coming out for annual treatment/inspection.

Silly story - I started crying on the phone with the florist. I’ve never met this woman that I can recall! But I read her obituary, her 1st husband died in a car accident when she was 21 w 2 babies, she remarried several years later and had another baby, her 2nd husband died in a car accident when the baby was 3, she eventually remarried again and he lived a lot longer than the first two but also passed before she did, she had cancer and died before she reached 80yo. What a life! ❤️

kittykatt, we read Charge of the Light Brigade, and Crossing the Bar in 9th grade. Some of my class can still recite Crossing the Bar, but it didn't stick in my memory long. I'll reread it tho. I did like reading Maud. I can see why it is one of your favorites.
helia, how long will you be gone? Is this spring break for where you are teaching?
kitkat, enjoy your grandkids. Supporting school drama and other functions can be so much fun! MrVKM and I will be going to a "fish boil" supper on Friday that supports local private Roman Catholic grade school here, even tho we are not Catholics.
Bama, sad to hear about burying 3 husbands, but happy that she found love in her life. Lives are filled with both grief and joy. Glad you enjoyed ice cream! (I learned at a music performance that the name Letitia means joy, because the word was used in Latin in one of the songs sung and a translation was offered)

I have been fasting one day each week during Lent as a reminder both to be healthy and to pray. My scale is going down. I baked NO FAT oatmeal muffins - have never had a recipe without any butter! They were actually good! I guess there was a little fat, in the nuts and in the milk, but not as a separate ingredient. Oats, chopped apples, raisins, nuts, applesauce, milk, eggs, baking powder. I'm also doing my best to walk a mile outside each day.
Which as soon as I'm dressed will be on my list.
Other TODOs
clear K counters and finish loading DW - did n't do it yesterday
1 LOL?
clothes to fold
help set up for a large funeral at church
Plan to bake Cardamon Braids for dgson who is coming home from University for spring break tomorrow . And he will help me wiht some yard work at my mother's house, because he is very knowledgeable about that after working with our city forester for 2 years. I can bake tomorrow as he won't be home until later in the day.
