The Suffolk Horse, also historically known as the Suffolk Punch or Suffolk Sorrel, is an English breed of draught horse. The first part of the name derives from the county of Suffolk in East Anglia, and the word "punch" is an old English word for a short stout person. It is a heavy draught horse which is always chestnut in colour. Suffolk Punches are known as good doers, and tend to have energetic gaits.

The breed was developed in the early 16th century, and remains similar in phenotype to its founding stock. The Suffolk Punch was developed for farm work, and gained popularity during the early 20th century. However, as agriculture became increasingly mechanised, the breed fell out of favour, particularly from the middle part of the century, and almost disappeared completely. The breed's status is listed as critical by the UK Rare Breeds Survival Trust and The Livestock Conservancy. The breed pulled artillery and non-motorised commercial vans and buses, as well as being used for farm work. It was also exported to other countries to upgrade local equine stock. Today, they are used for draught work, logging and advertising.

Suffolk Punches generally stand 165 to 178 centimetres (16.1 to 17.2 h), weigh 900 to 1000 kilograms (2000 to 2200 lb), and are always chestnut in colour. The traditional spelling, still used by the Suffolk Horse Society, is "chesnut" (with no "t" in the middle of the word).Horses of the breed come in many different shades of chestnut. Equestrian author Marguerite Henry described the breed by saying, "His color is bright chestnut – like a tongue of fire against black field furrows, against green corn blades, against yellow wheat, against blue horizons. Never is he any other color."

The Suffolk Punch tends to be shorter but more massively built than other British heavy draught breeds, such as the Clydesdale or the Shire, as a result of having been developed for agricultural work rather than road haulage. The breed has a powerful, arching neck; well-muscled, sloping shoulders; a short, wide back; and a muscular, broad croup. Legs are short and strong, with broad joints; sound, well-formed hooves; and little or no feathering on the fetlocks. ] The movement of the Suffolk Punch is said to be energetic, especially at the trot. The breed tends to mature early and be long-lived, and is economical to keep, needing less feed than other horses of similar type and size.

The Suffolk Punch registry is the oldest English breed society. The first known mention of the Suffolk Punch is in William Camden's Britannia, published in 1586, in which he describes a working horse of the eastern counties of England that is easily recognisable as the Suffolk Punch. This description makes them the oldest breed of horse that is recognisable in the same form today.

A detailed genetic study shows that the Suffolk Punch is closely genetically grouped not only with the Fell and Dales British ponies, but also with the European Haflinger. They were developed in Norfolk and Suffolk in the east of England, a relatively isolated area. The local farmers developed the Suffolk Punch for farm work, for which they needed a horse with power, stamina, health, longevity, and docility, and they bred the Suffolk to comply with these needs. Because the farmers used these horses on their land, they seldom had any to sell, which helped to keep the bloodlines pure and unchanged.

By the time of the First World War, the Suffolk Punch had become a popular workhorse on large farms in East Anglia due to its good temperament and excellent work ethic. It remained popular until the Second World War, when a combination of the need for increased wartime food production (which resulted in many horses being sent to the slaughterhouse), and increased farm mechanisation which followed the war-decimated population numbers.. Only nine foals were registered with the Suffolk Horse Society in 1966, but a revival of interest in the breed has occurred since the late 1960s, and numbers have risen continuously.

The clocks have finally "spring forward" for spring, so I'm looking forward to those lovely light evenings. It's still dark ATM, but that meant Matilda didn't think it was morning until about 20 minutes before the alarm. She's making up for it now!

Happy Palm Sunday kittykatt ! So, Matilda will let you sleep a bit longer for a few weeks thanks to the time change, that's good news !

kitkat I read the Dutch House, I liked it. I intend to read Bel Canto next, maybe starting next weekend, this one is in English so I will be able to tell if the reason I wasn't entirely impressed with the Dutch House was because of the translation - I found there were odd sentences, very long ones, I didn't really feel at home with them.

Sunny morning, MrNG has left for his paid consulting mission 2 hours away. DS10 is up, DS7 will take longer to get out of bed, it's technically past 10 am but for our bodies and minds it's still 9am. I had a cleaning list for most of the rooms, but using it yesterday I felt the need to detail the tasks in each room - well the most urgent tasks, I can't clean a house in one weekend. Still the time it will take to break each room-cleaning into smaller tasks is probably the time I could use to get some things done. I will have to do without the satisfaction (ant motivational effect) of crossing each small task as I go. It was like my reward for doing cleaning tasks.

And all the while I need to keep an eye on the kids and probably settle a few fights. And feed them, and have them get dressed and all that. And there is DS7's homework, still.
I suppose the "work on my resume" project will have to wait until next weekend, and after DUncle S--'s visit.

L.Ann, yes, the book I am reading is by Dana Stabenow. I had like 5 minutes to spend at the library (I was picking up a mandatory reading book for DD) and randomly picked up something from the murder mystery section that looked good - but I may check out more of her books on Amazon.
Dogged, us Czechs, we are the "laughing beasts" (that's a quote by the Nazi Deputy Protector Reinhard Heydrich - well since he was assasinated during the Operation Anthropoid, so we really did get the last laugh) - we renamed the street where the Russian Embassy is located to "Heroes of Ukraine street", and when they changed their address to a secondary exit, that one was renamed to "Boris Nemcov square" (Nemcov was an assasinated Russian opposition leader). So... we do know how to play the game once we decide to actually play it!
Frenchie, we did watch another Jurrasic movie. Only two more to go! I so get the reward of crossing the small items off the list! Do you remember our old weekend cleaning threads? Where even little things like "dust the bedroom" could have been checked off? "clean bedroom" just doesn't express the effort that goes into it!

Home from church. It's cold and grey and wet outside, as it rained overnight. Not really good gardening weather! But I will aim to spend an hour outside in the afternoon (hoping it gets a bit better later on), just on basic pick up and stuff. Our garden is far from tidy and DH and the kids have a tendency to just leave stuff around. Rest of the day, I need to tackle laundry, get the house company ready (even if we are not expecting any company), and handle paperwork!

trissie lol at the streets being renamed around the Russian embassy ! I remember fondly the Weekend Cleaning Challenge lists. I had lists on paper, like a large grid, by zones, and I would check a box each week I would do one task. So if "cleaning behind the bathroom trashcan" wasn't done on one month it would get done the next. But this morning I was thinking about the Cleansweeper's thread, where it says you try to declutter daily first, then move everything from the room and clean from top to bottom. I wish I was able to do that, maybe even for just a few rooms.

So I started with the downstairs bathroom, the only one with a shower that works, it is "en-suite" with the parents' bedroom so I will aslo have to make th bedroom presentable, or my DUncle won't be able to have a shower .
Said bathroom is small so I thought it would be easy to deep-clean it, and I keep the sink and counters clean on a regular basis. But.... I discovered ugly things, while decluttering a bit more. You know, when you start decluttering and all the dirt gets visible. And mold, too. Well... so I did from top to bottom like in the old Cleansweepers' thread. Mold near the ceiling. Dust (gunk) on top of the cupboards. And some mold spots on the walls if you look really well...
I did leave the sink area and mirror for later in the week.
I decided to make a detailed list, for those kind of details, in order not to forget during the week.
Now trying to have some lunch ready for the kids and I.
I hope the other rooms don't have as many bad surprises.

Morning all! Just a quick list and then we are off to the state Special Olympics basketball tournament. Quick rant….this venue is particularly bad… there is t enough seating and parking is far away so they have a shuttle bus but that means you can’t go sit in your car between games. Then you move to another place for awards where you can’t take in anything but clear bags and they don’t have a big enough spot to actually accommodate the number of people. Can you tell I am not excited? Luckily DD33 is and I think I can get my walk in if I drop DD33 offf at the venue and then go park the car and walk over.

Missing Bama. I think one of DDs might be home?

Last night, dh and I made progress booking our summer travels. We got a bnb in Avignon, France. We looked at tickets to Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, but they're not available for August yet. Dh will keep checking the website, but he thinks they'll open up June 1. He looked at plane tickets - but despite his comments the day before, they're very expensive right now. So, he's going to wait and check again later. We've decided to fly through Amsterdam instead of Paris as we're more familiar with that airport (Schiphol) and language. And dh will enjoy being in his home country for a couple hours, even if just in an airport.

Today, we have church at 10, CG2 @3:30 - 6ish, and then we'll host Sunday dinner (I think) for up to 7 people. I'll have about 3 hours of my own time between church (home around 12:30) and CG2. I'd like to do some laundry, work on class prep, maybe make a grocery order, and go for a walk.
