Emily Hilda Young’s 1930 novel Miss Mole , which won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, follows Hannah Mole, a witty and fiercely independent 40-year-old spinster. Broke and forced to work as a housekeeper for a strict, widowed minister, she conceals a rebellious, romantic spirit and a dangerous past secret that threatens to destroy her hard-won respectability.

Set in the English city of Radstowe, the narrative captures the precarious reality of unmarried, middle-class women in the early 20th century. Despite appearing outwardly meek to fit societal expectations, Miss Mole is irrepressible, using her intelligence and sharp irony to challenge hypocrisies while acting as a motherly guide to her employer's daughters.

For twenty years, Hannah Mole has drifted from job to job, acting as a governess or companion to difficult and wealthy older women. Shrewd, cynical, and possessing a rich inner life that she hides behind a drab exterior, she returns to her hometown of Radstowe to become a housekeeper for the Reverend Robert Corder.

The Corder family consists of:
Reverend Robert Corder: A controlling, patriarchal, and somewhat sanctimonious man who isn't quite sure if he should appreciate or fear Hannah's sharp wit.

Ethel and Ruth Corder: The minister’s motherless daughters who are desperate for guidance, warmth, and better food.

Wilfred Corder: The Reverend's nephew who immediately takes to Hannah and recognizes her brilliance.

Hannah’s sharp mind, hidden warmth, and rebellious nature rapidly elevate the Corder household, turning their dreary life into an adventure. She disrupts the stuffy routines of the family, bringing joy, irony, and subversive wisdom to the sisters while challenging the Reverend's authority.

However, the central tension of the story hinges on Hannah's past. She has a secret from her youth—involving an improper relationship—that forced her to leave Radstowe many years ago. As she becomes more deeply entangled with the Corder family, and as a romance seems like a possibility, whispers about her background begin to circulate...

Good morning, everyone, and happy Monday!

I never made it back yesterday, so have a lot of CUOP today. A brief synopsis of my life; our street party was a big success, yesterday was quieter, and our lunch menu was roast chicken, roast potatoes, gravy, carrots, green beans and tender stem broccoli, followed by Waitrose 's No1 vanilla ice cream. Both days were a hot sunny 32 C / 90F, but it's supposed to be cooler today. There's a breeze ATM, so I'll air the house through early, before it warms up.

DH is going.to the office today, but I'm not sure of his plans for the rest of the week. I have a day at home, and I need to get moving while it's still cool and fill those watering cans so I can finish watering my flower pots. It would also be good to get and early start on the housework, but we'll see!😀

Enjoy the cottage, Trissie! I'm sorry the holiday didn't come up to expectations. I hope the cottage is relaxing for you. I've never been to Romania, but I have mixed feelings about visiting - I've met several people from there and they range from the two out of hours emergency vets I've met, who were both wonderful, kind, highly knowledgeable and skilled well educated women, with an exceptionally good command of the English language, and, at the other end of the spectrum, are our Romanian neighbours, a few houses down the road, who are, shall we say, somewhat ... strange?!!

DH has left for work. I've written my list for the week,.so now I need to stop procrastinating and get into that shower!

Gma, Helia and FFB asked about Ann Widdecombe. She was definitely a "character" and described as "an extraordinary lady" and a "legendary colosseus" - , fiercely outspoken, with very, very strong principles, a strong faith and a great love of animals. She was never afraid to speak her mind and would always provide an answer to a question, without skirting around the issue.

I think what really shocked everyone, whether they liked her or not, (and she really did divide opinion!) was the nature of her death - what appears to be a very violent murder. Something that's not expected for an elderly woman living in a quiet rural community. The police have arrested a young man from Rotherham (nearly 300 miles away) who was seen by his neighbours on the morning of the murder "loading a big stick into a red car" before driving away. So far the police haven't released any motive, although they do say it's not terrorism related.

In case anyone is interested in reading more about Ann Widdecombe and her life, the link below gives some more details:
