The Little White Horse is a low fantasy children's novel by Elizabeth Goudge, first published by the University of London Press in 1946 with illustrations by C. Walter Hodges, and Anne Yvonne Gilbert in 1992. it features a recently orphaned teenage girl who is sent to the manor house of her cousin and guardian in the West Country of England. The estate, village, and vicinity are shrouded in mystery and magic; the "little white horse" is a unicorn. jK Rowling cited this book as part of the inspiration for her "Harry Potter" series.

Maria Merryweather became an orphan at age 13 on her father's death in 1842. She is sent to Moonacre Manor in England's West Country, accompanied by her governess Miss Heliotrope, and her dog Wiggins. There she finds herself in a world out of time. Her cousin and guardian Sir Benjamin Merryweather is one of the "sun" Merryweathers, and she loves him right away, as "sun" and "moon" Merryweathers do. Maria discovers that there is an ancient mystery about the founding of the estate.

Various creatures assist Maria, including Zachariah, an imposing, gifted and enigmatic black cat, Periwinkle, a feisty grey pony, and Wrolf, a black lion, but it is by self-sacrifice and perseverance that she can save Moonacre. It leads to right the wrongs, reunite lost loves, and finally bring peace to the valley.

Helia, that's very interesting about the Romanian trainee. It's also confirming my suspicions that the country is becoming very polarised into those who are bright, hard working, well educated and successful , and those who are considerably less so..

Dogged, a sunset walk with Germane sounds perfect!

Today is forecast to reach 28 C, so lower than the weekend. ATM there's a gentle breeze a d it s very pleasant, so a good reason to get up and moving! DH is WFH today and has gone for his walk, so I have some time.to.do my exercises uninterrupted!

I loved that book as a child, Kitty! I can't remember the story line - I just remember that I enjoyed it very much. That's a thought-provoking SHEM.

It looks kind of cloudy now. We're forecast to reach 97F (36.1C) late this afternoon, but right now it is 75F (23.9C)! That's rather pleasant.

I need to be otd in 15 minutes. Ha ha! I'll be late; I've already messaged the group. The KS2J group is meeting 9 - 10:30-ish this morning. That's the only thing on my calendar today - though there are LOTS of things I need to get done: call Dr., pay snail mail bills, get groceries, payroll - prep tutorial, payroll - prep AAS D6, payroll - set up exam prep sheet. Exercise - gym and the stair master today. Still, today is the least scheduled day of my week!
