Just noticed - our newer outdoor doors are double. There are actually 2 doors. The inner one on our front door has the panes of glass, downstairs it is mostly glass. The outer door in both classes is mainly glass -- but it looks like the glass can be switched out for a screen? Are double doors a more northern thing?

I've never thought so much about doors in my life!

Walked by the old outside door in our house -- I'll be darned. It too is double. The outside door is white metal w/ full length clear plastic panel

Sherinjoy--It does feel like Monday. I'm making mac-n-cheese and was going to tell DH that this is "meatless Monday"...only to realize this is Thursday. Made a quick cake, so he won't be too disappointed.

Helia--It sounds like you have what I call storm doors (the outermost door). I've seen them everywhere east of the Mississippi. Can't vouch for them out west. Newer homes don't tend to have them, sometimes, at least on the front door.

DH is taking tomorrow off to make up for working on the 4th. Hope we'll accomplish something!

Hello -- I'm a little late to the door party, but yes, helia, I think you are describing storm doors. We have those, too. Our inner doors are solid wood, stained dark/natural color, and have peep-holes. Outer door on front is solid glass. Outer door in back is 1/3 glass @ the top, 1/3 screen/glass, and 1/3 solid metal at the bottom. It's not especially attractive, but extremely common here. I imagine the purpose is so if one would like, one could open the inner door and open the screened portion and have additional air flow through the house. In our case this NEVER happens, b/c w/our allergies, we don't really like to bring the outside in very much at all, LOL! Both our doors are well-protected by porch/carport from all but the most severe blowing rain.
Incidentally, we almost always keep our shades & blinds closed, too, which makes the house too dark for my taste, but dh thinks it keeps the house cooler, I think.
Our windows are double-paned glass w/pane inserts between the glass. This makes them easier to clean, as if anyone ever took time to do that. Quite a few of them have lost their "seal" and become cloudy in between the panes, and that is a source of annoyance, but dh doesn't want to deal w/replacement headaches and neither of us want to deal w/replacement costs, so we live with it. Entire bay window needs replacement b/c interior wood frame is beginning to show signs of leakage -- bay window is the only one that is not protected by the overhang of the roof. The outside edge of the window is just even w/the overhang of the house. I imagine Mr. Harmony has seen this problem before... * sigh * and in hindsight, ddad said, "We should have changed the roofline over that window." Now he would suggest a brass, I think, sort of gable over the bay window? But that will probably not happen in dh's lifetime.

(I got dh's short ironed last night.)

I would like another nap. I am living exactly like dgs -- I just want to eat & sleep.
I just cannot get my act together this summer. Am I ALWAYS this lazy?

Yesterday we had nice time w/dcousins, etc... and still managed to get away in time that dh did not miss any of the Braves' game. I took a plate from the shrimp boil @ dcousins to ds and spent about an hour watching dgbaby sleep... and dparents stopped by to visit for awhile also. I'm pretty certain ddad noticed the scratches by the door, but he didn't say a word, or even let on by his expression that he was concerned... and TA DA for me -- I didn't even ASK dmom about it this morning when I talked to her! I told myself what I don't know won't hurt me -- or WORRY me -- so I shouldn't even talk about it unless ddad brings it up to me! (At which time I will tell him that is ds's deal... take it up with him if he is so inclined.)
Last night, dh I drove out to watch fireworks from position that is really too far from fireworks, but also far from the traffic involved at the actual celebration site. Still... we had a nice night.

Our last house had the solid glass storm door on the front. Loved to open the solid door and let all that light in. Great way to keep up with who is jogging by the house , too!

This house doesn't have that, but windows are larger, so no need to leave front door open. We do have one storm door onto balcony upstairs. It is just like Lucylee described for her back door.

We replaced our icky hollow core cheapy door a few years back with a $10 yd. sale find wooden solid door, h. refinished it and we've had quite a few compliments on it. I like the privacy we get from having a solid door for a front door.

Knitting is done on the lemon yellow prayer shawl now I'm working the edging on it.
Lunch is over.
I've done my walk.
Garden area is watered.
Laundry is folded.

I love it, LucyLee! Does that mean I can do 5x25 (the 25th of December? ) That's about my speed today. I'm just not with it today and snoozed most of the afternoon and was just plain unable to get up and going again.

Thanks for the news about Indiana, MT. Had been wondering myself. Hate it that she keeps having to go through this. She's so special!

DH went golfing with DS-R today and 2 others. First he's gone in quite a few years. He wanted a hat so I went all over trying to find a straw hat -got one at W World & brought it home only to have him say, "Oh, I was thinking of a ball cap". Reminded him that he has a kazillion of those in the upper cupboards of our bedroom. But the straw hat has a nice big brim and he said he'd like that for around here.

Just drove the cart over to DD's and passed dgs7 & gd13 almost there. Said hi to her and asked where her Mom was. She never did look at me and just pointed behind her. DD says I need to just grow some b---- and tell her that I refuse to be treated that way. Not that it would help I'm sure. All I can say is it's a good thing she's going to camp in 2 1/2 days or I'm sure someone around here is really going to blow up at her. Whether it be dd, ddil, ds-R or dh. None of which do I want to hear. Other dgd17 is still here and has to be home by 11 tomorrow morning. Surprised her dad has let her stay this long.

Many years ago today I was birthing DS-A. Don't think there's going to be a baby on his b'day -at least nothing yet. If he doesn't arrive today then we all hope he comes after gd leaves for camp. Awful to say or think.

DH just called to have me meet him up by the entrance.

Sounds like everyone had a busy week and a good 4th of July. We watched "A Capital Fourth" and then the Boston Pops since it was on later. I thought the D.C. one was better in music and fireworks.

Sorry to hear about Indiana in hospital --- "Get well soon"! Thanks for letting us know MT.

Doors....our front door is solid wood. Beautiful grain, varnished on the inside and painted on the outside. One of my future projects is to strip the paint off and refinish natural. Our back door is metal, but has a two-pane window. The bottom pane can be raised up to open to the screen. Our utility room opens under our carport and has a wooden louvered door at one end which is padlocked shut. On the other side of the room we have a steel security door - just way heavier than a screen door with a regular door handle and lock. Our front door has a peep hole but no windows. I like to be able to see who's knocking at the door also. If I don't know who it is I latch the chain so the door only opens a few inches.

I guess Elizabeth is on her way to her cruise. We are all packed, just have toothbrush etc. to put in tomorrow morning at last minute. I'm just about ready to shut down the computer and pack it. Our plane leaves at 8:30 am so it will be an early 5 am wake up for us. Ds#2 and family will take us to airport.

Honey, I'm home! Once again reminded how much I really don't like going to stores.... walking endless aisles even though I am only looking for things on my list....while keeping up with a 3 year old WHO NEEDS A NAP....and also while playing referee among the older brothers. Argh!

I found a door that said "Pick me! Pick me! Take me home!!" Okay..... the door didn't really talk, but I think it would have told me that .....if it could. Little did I know, selecting the door was the easy part of today. The part I stumbled over was the locks for it. I wanted keyless locks which lead to waaaaaay too much time standing in front of the lock selection trying to understand what my options were....... while Mr 3 yr old and his brothers were being ....???brats???? .....???brothers????. In hindsight I should have marched them all out of the store but I wanted to finish this door/lock selection process so i didn't.

Back from dinner.

The hotel we are at is 1/3 more expensive than last night but over 3x nicer. Includes a hot buffet breakfast too!

We walked around the block looking for a restaurant for dinner. I wasn't feeling well and just wanted a BTL. The first two places we looked didn't have that but I went into the grocery store and it had a grill, lots of cooked food and a 'cafe' to sit at and eat. BLT and dh's grilled cheese with bacon and grilled onions were both on the menu so we ate there. We added baby carrots, and milk from the regular grocery aisles. And I bought a tiny ice cream for dessert and walked back fast to eat it in the room.

There was a message on dh's phone to call his baby sister. Turns out the step son of his eldest sister has died of a drug overdose. Not unexpected but sad. We won't be able to make it to the funeral but she didn't want us to come in from out of town anyway. We hardly knew him (except from when he was a child - he is a few years older than our dd.) I feel very sorry for his grandmother (who I do know well) and for my dsisil.

Last round is done...except for the window well stuff. The front flower bed is still too wet from all the rain to step on it, so I'll check again later today. DS is up and getting ready for work; DH is still sleeping. He said he wanted to go with me to do a bunch of errands today, since I need to be out most of the day, and he has plans with some friends this evening. It's a good thing he's going with me, cause of course now that the day is getting properly underway, I'm starting to get tired again! Somehow I'm going to have to stay up until after supper, and then get a very early night. The plans I did have for sewing this evening may get changed to sleeeeeeppppppppp!!!

Apparently my plan earlier wasn't to post this entry! It's now 7pm, and I got everything done on my great long l*st except Goodwill, and I haven't found the boutonniere pins DD is looking for. I also got most of the stuff done on the housework l*st. Heaven only knows how I managed to be so productive, cause I never did get my nap!! Yes, fellow villagers...I will be going to bed EARLY tonight!!
