Good morning / good afternoon, Helia and Dogged.
Helia, I'm glad you're enjoying the books. 3 children under 4yo is a lot to.cope with, especially on your own! I hope the smoke situation starts to improve soon.
Dogged, I can see how the priest giving "the talk" to couples in a devout Catholic community could.certainly be effective! (But at the same time distressing for those couples who desperately wanted children and it just wasn't happening.)
I'm finally back home again, after a good service and a very nice lunch with DF PM. Freddie has decided he's going to be on my lap, which means I'm not.going to get anyone's nails clipped before its time for me to go out again to DF PM's service of commissioning as churchwarden, but, OTOH meant I've managed to get the email together requesting cat meds and food, and send it off to the vet .

Along the line of the books kittykatt is talking about there is a series of books called the Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion that are getting a lot of buzz. They are short and great on audio. They are written by a young single woman living in London in the 1880s.
I think this is the first time I have sat down all day.

l.ann, you have been both busy and working diligently! Hooray that there is tome to sit down, at least for a little while.
kittykatt, so fun to have the synopses of these books by female authors, and about women. I remember in high school learning about George Eliot, a man's name but a female author who didn't believe that she would be published with her female name, ManyAnn Evans. In summers, as young people (growing up) even when we were passed nap time, Mother always had us lie down for an hour after lunch (and dishes). We used it for reading time. Your kitties surely enjoy lap time!
Doggedly, you are doing laundry in the morning? I thought late at night was your time to shine?
helia, being so close in age, have your children maintained close relationship as adults?
We are in National weather service extreme heat warning region, still.
I woke up a little before 830, took an eye vitamin, then laid down to read part of Gospel of Mark "just for a bit" and opened my eyes at 1030! I had spent yesterday feeling low energy. Maybe sleep was what I needed. I also took a benadryl befroe going to bed, hoping that it would calm the itching of my muliptle bites. And I went to bed well before midnight, so I should have more energy today. The bites are still very red, but so far are tiching a little less. Most intense itching is supposed to be done in 48 hours, it's npw more than 72, so improving? But still very red and swollen.
Dbro is on the way to airport with dsil, has to stop at a specialty hardware store on the way back. We meet with my investment advisor later this afternoon.
time to get dressed! (almost noon!) and go work more on the project dsil and I started. At least one more box to go to archives.

You've had a lucky escape, Freddie! Of course, a nail trim still looms in your future, but for today we eat, drink and be merry.
That also looks like an interesting read, L.Ann.
I have flipped the laundry and am eating salad for breakfast. I put some of my grains mix in to beef it up.
You are so right about me, Gma. But I have been having trouble getting access to the machines on my floor in the evening, and with the heat the laundry rooms can be pretty miserable by days' end. So I planned to get up and get active earlier today, in hope of grabbing the room first. And it worked!
My favourite George Eliot quote is along the lines of "Nothing astonishes people more than the predictable outcome of their own actions." And we haven't changed.

I'm sorry about the itchy bites. People tend to downplay how irritating and distracting an itch can be. I hope that you find some relief!
Thursday
Spiffed self
Checked laundry roomโhurray, itโs free!
Started two loads of laundry
Flipped laundry

Our AQI (air quality index) is now at 482 or 498, depending on the website. Either number is really bad.
It should be 50 or below.
I have read a few of George Eliot's books and enjoyed them - well, precisely 3 of them. I think I liked Middlemarch the best. That's a very true quote of hers, Doggedly!
Why are we so surprised?
I hope the itching goes away soon, Gma. I'm glad dsil is helping you!! My kids - Dd30 and ds were actually very competitive with each other growing up. They did become close for a while when baby dd28 arrived, but eventually, dd30 bonded more with dd28, and those two are still very close today. I think gender won out over age. I'm not sure if the 3 of them still have sibling calls or not as they used to before ds got married.
Oh my Doggedly. I guess Catholics used to be very serious about (not using) birth control back in the day. We're not Catholic and none of our family is Catholic, but I think that they're more low-key about it now?
L Ann, I need a new audio book so I'll check out those books! Thanks for the rec!
Done with my meetings for the day and having lunch.

The name Middlemarch is familiar, helia, but I can't remember it. I remember The Mill On The Floss the best. Was Middlemarch the one where the man auctioned off his wife in his youth? Or was that The Mayor Of Casterbridge?
The Catholic church was inflexible about birth control when I was young. I remember the distress of my coworker whose doctor told her not to have any more children for health reasons, but the priest cut her off from communion unless she gave in and stopped the birth control. I can't imagine that it's still like that today.
Can you imagine if they tried that with today's young women? They'd say "Keep your snack; I'll carry cookies in my purse."
I have brought the laundry back, so I'll start hanging it.

Whatever works, L.Ann. I am reminded of the lady with the facecloth in the bowl of cold water. Every time a child interrupted her reading, she washed the child's face while they talked.
